Guide emblem: Destin golf winter conditions: overseeding, dormant bermuda and aeration dates

Destin golf winter conditions depend on whether a course overseeds. Some resort courses overseed with ryegrass in October and November for winter colour, while many daily-fee courses let their bermuda go dormant, tan but playable, from about December to March. At Sandestin, Baytowne and The Links close for a week in early November to overseed greens.

Most courses on the Emerald Coast are bermudagrass, from fairways to greens, and practices vary course by course and year by year. There is no area-wide schedule. Here is what each course publishes, with the closure dates that matter for a fall or winter trip.

Quick facts

  • Grass: bermuda nearly everywhere, with TifEagle or TifDwarf greens at many courses and seashore paspalum at Origins.
  • Overseed closures (2026): Baytowne November 2-8; The Links November 3-9.
  • Dormant season: about December to March at non-overseeded courses; tan but playable.
  • Frost: possible north of the bay (Niceville January lows 38.0F).
  • Aeration: mostly June to August; Sandestin also in May.
  • Isaias: cleanup may delay or skip some 2026 overseeding.

Overseeded vs dormant: what changes for your game

An overseeded course in winter has ryegrass over the bermuda for colour. The price is a closure and recovery period in the fall. That is the Sandestin model at Baytowne and The Links: a week closed, then two weeks at discounted rates while the new grass grows in.

A dormant course lets the bermuda go tan. It is still a full, playable surface. Shalimar Pointe is a good example: its greens were rebuilt with TifEagle in 2023, but a reviewer found very little green grass in the dormant season. Windswept Dunes, inland at Freeport, publishes no schedule, so expect dormant or painted fairways unless the course says otherwise.

Neither is a reason to skip winter golf. Destin golf winter conditions are a trade between colour and cost, and dormant months come with the lowest rates of the year. See Destin golf in winter.

The November closure window

Early November is the one stretch where Destin golf winter conditions need planning. In 2026:

  • November 2-5: Camp Creek closed for maintenance.
  • November 2-8: Baytowne closed for overseeding.
  • November 3-9: The Links closed for overseeding.
  • November 9-11: The Third closed for maintenance.
  • November 9-23: Baytowne ($69) and The Links ($59) at recovery rates.
  • November 12-14: Campfest member-guest takes St. Joe courses off the guest sheet.

The Raven and Burnt Pine list no fall closures, and both drop to winter rates on November 2: $109 public or $95 guest at The Raven, and $149 at Burnt Pine. A Sandestin trip in the first half of November should lean on those two. See the Raven course guide.

Frost and cold mornings

At the beach, January averages a high of 63.1F and a low of 45.3F (NOAA 1991-2020 normals for Destin Executive Airport). North of Choctawhatchee Bay it is colder at night: Niceville averages a January low of 38.0F and a December low of 41.0F, and frost delays are possible on winter mornings. That affects Bluewater Bay and Rocky Bayou more than the Destin and Sandestin courses. For a winter round on the Niceville side, book mid-morning, not first light. January is also the windiest month at the Destin airport, averaging 7.7 mph.

Aeration: the summer and spring catch

Most Emerald Coast courses aerify greens in summer, roughly June to August, sometimes closing or going cart-path-only for a few days. Sandestin's 2026 schedule put aeration closures in May and August at every course, followed by discounted recovery weeks: $89 at The Raven, $69 at Baytowne and The Links and $115 at Burnt Pine. At Bay Point in Panama City Beach, past aerification dates have fallen in early May, mid-June and mid-August, and a reviewer found punched greens in August 2026.

Late summer is where reviews flag it. GolfPass reviewers in August 2026 found aerated greens at Kelly Plantation and Indian Bayou, and late-summer reviews at The Raven and The Links complained of slow, bumpy or weedy greens, with October reviews better. If greens matter, avoid late August and check with the course. See the Kelly Plantation course guide.

Choosing courses for a winter trip

If colour matters to you, build a December-to-March trip around the courses that say they overseed, and check recent reviews for the rest. If price matters more, dormant courses are where the winter value is: Shalimar Pointe's snowbird membership runs October 1 to March 31 at $450 for one month single, and Sandestin's Snowbird card puts The Links and Baytowne at $45 plus tax from November 2026 to January 2027, after their greens are overseeded.

Snowbird season also changes the tee sheet. From December to March, monthly renters and senior leagues make weekday mornings busiest at local-favourite courses, so the cheapest winter golf is often a late-morning or early-afternoon time. Short winter days matter too: Burnt Pine's after-1 PM guest times need a steady pace in November and December. A sensible winter week mixes one Sandestin round, one Destin public course such as Indian Bayou, and one value round west of town, with the Niceville courses saved for milder afternoons.

How to check before you book

  1. Ask the pro shop whether the course overseeds and when it closes.
  2. Read reviews from the last two to four weeks on GolfPass or GolfNow.
  3. For November, check Sandestin's published closure table.
  4. For St. Joe courses, ask the inn about maintenance days and post-storm status.
  5. North of the bay in winter, ask about frost delays.

Questions golfers ask

Do Destin golf courses overseed in winter?

Some do and many do not. Resort courses have commonly overseeded with ryegrass in October and November for winter colour, while many daily-fee and local courses let bermuda go dormant, tan but playable, from about December to March. At Sandestin, Baytowne and The Links publish greens-overseeding closures each fall.

When are Baytowne and The Links closed for overseeding?

In 2026, Baytowne is closed November 2-8 and The Links November 3-9 for overseeding greens. Both then sell discounted recovery rates: $69 at Baytowne from November 9-22 and $59 at The Links from November 10-23.

What does dormant bermuda play like?

Dormant bermuda turns tan but stays playable, and the dormant months, roughly December to March, carry the year's lowest rates. One GolfPass reviewer at Shalimar Pointe noted very little green grass in the dormant season, which suggests its fairways are not overseeded.

Are there frost delays near Destin?

They are possible north of the bay. Niceville's January normal low is 38.0F, about 7F colder than the beach at Destin, so courses such as Bluewater Bay and Rocky Bayou can see frosty starts. At the beach, the January normal low is 45.3F.

When do Destin courses aerify?

Most aerify greens in summer, roughly June to August. Sandestin's 2026 aeration closures were in May and August at each course, and Bay Point in Panama City Beach has listed early May, mid-June and mid-August aerification in past years.

Did Hurricane Isaias affect overseeding in 2026?

Possibly. The season research notes that post-Isaias tree and debris cleanup may delay or skip this year's overseed at some courses. Confirm conditions with the course for November and December 2026 rounds.

Which courses publish no overseed policy?

Kelly Plantation, Indian Bayou, Regatta Bay, Emerald Bay, Windswept Dunes, Bluewater Bay, the Fort Walton Beach courses and most others publish none. Call the pro shop, or read recent reviews, before a winter trip.
