Red-rock poster: Destin golf in October: the driest month, the fall peak and the Fishing Rodeo

Destin golf in October is the fall peak: the driest month of the year (2.82 inches on about 6 days), highs near 81F, nights near 63F, and beaches emptied after Labor Day. The month-long Destin Fishing Rodeo keeps the harbor busy. The catches are hurricane season, which runs to November 30, and overseed closures in early November.

October 2026 also showed the risk side. Hurricane Isaias made landfall near Destin on October 9 as a Category 2, and some courses were still partly closed weeks later. Here is what an October trip looks like, with the dated fees and closures we found.

Quick facts

  • Weather: 80.9F high, 63.2F low, 2.82 in of rain, about 6 rain days (NOAA normals).
  • Gulf water: about 79F.
  • Crowds: beaches quiet; harbor busy with the Fishing Rodeo.
  • Late-October 2026 green fees: about $75-$190 at the main Destin public courses.
  • Sandestin fall rates: run to November 1 or 2, then winter rates.
  • Risks: hurricane season, and early-November overseed closures.

Why October is the pick of fall

September is still hot, at the Atlantic hurricane peak around September 10. November cools to about 72F afternoons and brings closures for overseeding. October sits between them: the driest weather of the year, about 81F days, and water still warm at about 79F. It is the area's second golf high season after spring, but without spring break, so you get peak-season weather without peak-season crowds on the beach. See the best time to golf in Destin.

Kelly Plantation shows the October effect best. Its late-October deals were far below the $169.99-$179.99 seen for early-September mornings, and it is the most complete public course in Destin after a 2024 Bergin renovation. See the Kelly Plantation course guide. Indian Bayou's afternoon times started at $74.99, half a prime morning slot. See the Indian Bayou course guide.

The Destin Fishing Rodeo

The Destin Fishing Rodeo has run through October every year since 1948. The 78th ran October 1-31, 2026, with daily weigh-ins from 10 AM to 7 PM on the Destin Harbor Boardwalk, behind AJ's, free to watch. Whether it carried on unchanged after Hurricane Isaias was not confirmed.

For golfers, the rodeo cuts both ways. Charter boats are booked all month and fishing groups compete with golf groups for harbor lodging on weekends, so a harbor base such as the Emerald Grande at HarborWalk Village books up. But it pairs well with a golf trip: a half-day inshore or deep-sea charter on a non-golf morning. See things to do in Destin.

Hurricane season: the October risk

The Panhandle's main hurricane window is August to October. Isaias in 2026 is the reminder: it made landfall late on October 9 at about 105 mph, surge overtopped beach walkways in Destin, almost all of Destin lost power, and Okaloosa Island and Fort Walton Beach had wind damage. On 30A, St. Joe reopened its courses in stages. Camp Creek was front nine only from October 17, 2026, and Shark's Tooth was closed until further notice.

For an October trip, check lodging cancellation terms before you book and consider travel insurance. A storm can close courses for days to weeks. See Destin hurricane season.

Late October into November: the closure window

Destin golf in October runs straight into Sandestin's overseed season. In 2026, Baytowne closed November 2-8 and The Links November 3-9 to overseed greens, with recovery rates of $69 and $59 in the two weeks after. The Raven and Burnt Pine list no fall closures and drop to winter rates on November 2 ($109 public or $95 guest at The Raven, $149 at Burnt Pine).

On 30A, Shark's Tooth had a maintenance closure October 26-29, Camp Creek November 2-5 and The Third November 9-11. Member-guest weeks also take St. Joe courses off the guest sheet: Sharkfest in mid-October and Campfest November 12-14, 2026. Some courses overseed with rye in October and November and many do not; see Destin golf winter conditions.

September and November as alternatives

If October dates do not work, either side of it can.

September is still summer weather: a normal high of 88.5F, nights about 72F, and 5.18 inches of rain on about 8 days. It sits at the Atlantic hurricane peak, around September 10. In its favour, beach rates fall after Labor Day (September 6, 2027) and the water is at about 84F. The Destin Seafood Festival fills the harbor on the last weekend of the month (listings for 2026 conflict between September 25-27 and 26-28). Sandestin's fall rates start September 1 at The Raven and Baytowne. Kelly Plantation, though, was at its highest prices seen in early September 2026.

November is cooler, about 72F afternoons and 53F mornings, with fall golf rates and quiet beaches except Thanksgiving week (November 26, 2026; November 25, 2027). Hurricane season ends November 30, and the first snowbirds arrive. The Raven ($109 public, $95 guest) and Burnt Pine ($149) move to winter rates on November 2, and The Links drops to $89 public or $69 guest from November 24. Plan around the overseed closures in the first half of the month, and remember Burnt Pine's guest times start at 1 PM, which leaves less daylight in November.

Planning an October trip

  1. Aim for mid to late October. It is past the September hurricane peak and before the November closures.
  2. Book Sandestin through November 1. Fall rates end then; after that, The Raven and Burnt Pine drop to winter rates, and Baytowne and The Links close for overseeding.
  3. Play mornings at Indian Bayou and Kelly Plantation, or afternoons for price.
  4. Book harbor lodging early on weekends because of the Fishing Rodeo.
  5. Check post-storm status with St. Joe courses and any course near the coast.

For booking windows read Destin tee times, and for spring as the alternative, Destin golf in spring.

It is one of the two best. October is the driest month of the year at 2.82 inches on about 6 days, with normal highs of 80.9F and lows of 63.2F. The beaches have emptied after Labor Day, and it is the area's second golf high season.

What does golf cost in Destin in October?

Is October still hurricane season in Destin?
