Guide emblem: Things to do in Destin between rounds: Crab Island, the harbour, state parks and fishing

The best things to do in Destin between rounds are on the water: a boat to Crab Island, a half-day fishing charter from the harbour, or a walk on the dune beaches at Henderson Beach and Topsail Hill state parks. In the evenings, Baytowne Wharf, the harbour boardwalk and the 30A towns of Seaside and Rosemary Beach fill the gap.

This guide groups them by area, so you can match an afternoon off with the courses nearby. Hurricane Isaias hit near Destin on October 9, 2026, and individual venues were not re-checked for post-storm closures or reduced hours, so confirm before you go.

Quick facts

  • Best on the water: Crab Island (April-October, tide- and weather-dependent) and harbour fishing charters.
  • Best beaches: Henderson Beach, Topsail Hill and Grayton Beach state parks (entry fee per vehicle).
  • Best evening: Baytowne Wharf at Sandestin, the Destin harbour boardwalk, Seaside or Rosemary Beach.
  • Rainy day: Air Force Armament Museum (no base access needed), Destin History and Fishing Museum.
  • October: the Destin Fishing Rodeo weigh-ins on the harbour, free to watch.

On the water: Crab Island and fishing

Crab Island is a submerged sandbar just inside East Pass by the Marler Bridge. In summer, hundreds of boats anchor in waist-deep clear water with floating vendors. Rent a pontoon or tiki boat or join a tour from the harbour. It is tide- and weather-dependent and best from April to October, and it gets crowded on summer weekends.

The water temperature tells you when it is pleasant. These are 2016-2025 averages from the NOAA Panama City Beach gauge, the closest open-Gulf reading, with Destin's normal daily highs:

Month Gulf water (F) Air high (F)
April71.176.2
May77.883.5
June82.688.9
July84.890.9
August86.290.6
September84.488.5
October78.680.9

The Destin Harbor Boardwalk is home to the charter fleet that gives Destin its "World's Luckiest Fishing Village" tag. A half-day inshore or deep-sea charter pairs well with golf: play Indian Bayou, 9 minutes and 3.3 miles from the harbour, in the morning and fish in the afternoon. In October the Destin Fishing Rodeo runs all month, with free daily weigh-ins from 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. behind AJ's in 2026. Its status after Hurricane Isaias was not confirmed. See the Indian Bayou course guide.

Beaches and state parks

  • Henderson Beach State Park: undeveloped dune beach and boardwalks in the middle of Destin, off US 98. The Henderson Beach Resort includes park access in its $49 daily resort fee, and the park's own campground is 7 minutes from Kelly Plantation.
  • Topsail Hill Preserve State Park: tall dunes, rare coastal dune lakes and a long quiet beach reached by tram or a walk, just east of Sandestin. Its campground is 10 minutes from Baytowne.
  • Grayton Beach State Park: often-ranked Panhandle beach, named top US beach by Dr. Beach in 1994, with Western Lake and trails next to the old village of Grayton Beach and its Red Bar.
  • Eden Gardens State Park: the Wesley Mansion, moss-draped oaks and gardens on Tucker Bayou, north of 30A. A quiet half-day.
  • Fred Gannon Rocky Bayou State Park: sand-pine trails, bayou kayaking and a campground off SR 20 near Bluewater Bay and the Mid-Bay Bridge.

Florida State Parks charge an entry fee per vehicle. Henderson Beach also started a day-use reservation program for park entry on May 15, 2026.

Evenings: Baytowne Wharf, the harbour and 30A towns

The Village of Baytowne Wharf is the evening default for anyone at Sandestin: a pedestrian village of bars, restaurants and shops on the bay inside the resort, reached by the resort tram. It is a short drive from the Links, which has five holes along the same bay. Across US 98, Grand Boulevard Town Center adds shops, restaurants and a cinema.

On the Destin harbour, HarborWalk Village and the boardwalk restaurants sit side by side; our where to eat in Destin guide picks the best for groups.

Along 30A, Seaside is the 1980s planned town used as the set of The Truman Show, with Airstream food trucks and beach pavilions; parking is tight in season. At the east end, Rosemary Beach's town centre and the white architecture of Alys Beach next door make a good evening walk for anyone staying near Camp Creek or Origins. Our 30A golf guide covers golf on that stretch.

Okaloosa Island and Fort Walton Beach

The Gulfarium Marine Adventure Park on Okaloosa Island has dolphin and sea-lion shows. The Okaloosa Island Fishing Pier charges a walk-on fee; the pier and boardwalk area may have post-Isaias restrictions, so check. Downtown Fort Walton Beach has the Indian Temple Mound Museum at Heritage Park, a large Mississippian-era ceremonial mound on US 98, and the hands-on Emerald Coast Science Center for children.

These pair with the city's 36 holes: the Fort Walton Beach Golf Club Pines and Oaks are 16 minutes from the Okaloosa Island hotels. See our Fort Walton Beach golf guide and the Fort Walton Beach Golf Club Pines course guide.

Rainy-day options

A washed-out day needs a plan:

  • Air Force Armament Museum: aircraft and weapons outside the Eglin gate on SR 85, about 10 minutes from VPS. No base access needed; outdoor airpark plus indoor galleries.
  • Destin History and Fishing Museum: small museum on Stahlman Avenue at the west end of the harbour.
  • Destin Commons: open-air shopping with a cinema and partly covered walkways at US 98 and Mid-Bay Bridge Road.
  • Silver Sands Premium Outlets: large outlet centre in Miramar Beach, a few minutes west of Sandestin; heavy Saturday traffic.
  • Grayton Beer Company: 30A's local brewery with a taproom off US 98 north of Seacrest.
  • Edwin Watts Golf: golf shop near Destin Commons for balls, gloves and clubs; rental availability not verified, so call ahead.

Things to do with kids

For family trips, the Gulfarium, the Science Center and Big Kahuna's Water and Adventure Park (summer only, on US 98 in central Destin) are the obvious picks. For golf with children, the Origins short course on east 30A is open to the public, with a six-hole regulation loop or a ten-hole par-3 routing. Our Destin family golf vacation guide builds a full trip around it.

Fitting it into a golf trip

A simple pattern works on this coast: golf early, water or beach after lunch, dinner in a walkable spot. Summer storms tend to build in the afternoon, so a dawn tee time and an afternoon on the water often swap well in July and August. Our Destin golf trip itinerary lays out four days that way, and the Destin buddies golf trip guide adds a charter day for groups. The Mississippi coast equivalent is our things to do in Biloxi for golfers.
