Locator map: Destin family golf vacation: short courses, junior tees and the beach in one trip

A Destin family golf vacation works best around short courses and the beach. Origins on east 30A is a public six- or ten-hole family course, Seascape's nine holes cost $22 to $35, and Baytowne at Sandestin has a 3,002-yard junior tee. Stay inside Sandestin or on Okaloosa Island, golf early, and keep the afternoons for the water.

This guide covers the courses kids can actually enjoy, the family-friendly bases, and how to fit golf around the beach without anyone melting in the July heat.

Quick facts

  • Best family course: Origins, Watersound, a public short course with FootGolf.
  • Cheapest nine: Seascape, $21.99-$34.99 on GolfNow in late October 2026.
  • Junior tees: Baytowne Jr tee, 3,002 yards, slope 92 (men) / 100 (women).
  • Free par 3: Sandpiper Cove, resort guests only.
  • Best base: a Sandestin condo on the tram, or a family hotel on Okaloosa Island.
  • Summer: play at dawn; afternoon storms build on 10 to 12 days a month.

Origins: the family course on 30A

Origins is St. Joe's only public course and the best quick round for families staying anywhere on east 30A, with no stay required. Davis Love III designed it as a short course: a six-hole regulation loop (par 30, 1,852 yards per GolfPass) with real par 4s and 5s, or a ten-hole par-3 routing of about 1,600 to 1,800 yards using alternate tees and greens. It runs FootGolf every afternoon, which is a hit with kids who are not golfers yet.

It books on GolfNow or by phone and is closed every Wednesday. The only price we found was an August 2026 GolfNow deal of about $61 with cart. See the Origins course guide.

Seascape and Sandpiper Cove: cheap and free nines

Seascape in Miramar Beach is now a 9-hole resort course winding through condos, with water on most holes. Late-October 2026 deals ran $21.99 to $34.99, and a September reviewer said nine holes took under 1.5 hours. Recent reviews rate the conditions poorly, so treat it as a cheap nine for kids or beginners, not a showcase. There is no driving range.

Sandpiper Cove is a nine-hole par-3 course inside the gated Sandpiper Cove condo resort in Destin, free for resort guests per rental listings, with clubs to rent at the clubhouse. It is a popular family condo base, and the resort also has five pools and a six-court tennis complex.

Full courses with short tees

When the kids can hit it a bit, a full course with very short tees lets the family play together:

  • Baytowne at Sandestin has five tee sets including a 3,002-yard Jr tee, and it is Sandestin's cheapest round: $99 public or $75 for resort guests most of 2026, with cart and practice balls included. See the Baytowne course guide.
  • Kelly Plantation has nine tee sets down to the 4,096-yard Anderson tees. See the Kelly Plantation course guide.
  • Rocky Bayou in Niceville has ten tee options down to a 4,135-yard Teal set, and sells 9 holes for $69 with cart and range balls. See the Rocky Bayou course guide.
  • Legacy in Panama City Beach has a 4,019-yard Yellow tee and a 9-hole par-27 executive course its reviewers suggest as a cheap family warm-up. It is about 70 minutes from Destin.

Junior rates

A few courses publish junior pricing:

  • Fort Walton Beach Golf Club (Pines and Oaks): public juniors pay 50 percent of the dynamic rate; junior members 75 percent off.
  • Signal Hill, Panama City Beach: juniors $16 walking or $26 with cart for 18 (summer 2026 rates). Walking is allowed, rare for the area.

Where to stay as a family

Stay Why it suits families
Sandestin Golf and Beach ResortCondos with kitchens; free tram to the beach, Baytowne Wharf and four courses; resort fee covers bike rentals
Hilton SandestinOn the Sandestin beach; kids 12 and under free breakfast with a paying adult; indoor and outdoor pools
Holiday Inn Resort Fort Walton BeachGulf-front on Okaloosa Island; Kids' Suites; lazy-river pool and heated indoor pool; walk to the Gulfarium
WaterColor InnBeachfront on 30A; seven new family suites; free adult bikes; walk to Seaside

Sandestin is the easiest family golf base: one parent can play the Raven or the Links while the others take the tram to the beach. Burnt Pine is open to resort guests after 1 p.m. if a parent wants the best course on the property. The Hilton's $40 daily resort charge covers the tram, a Silver Sands shuttle and bike and water rentals access. Our where to stay in Destin for golf guide compares every base, and the Sandestin golf guide covers the four courses.

When to go: summer heat and family weeks

Summer is the family beach season, from Memorial Day to early August. It is also the most expensive time for rooms, with week-long minimum stays common in beach condos, and the hottest: normal highs of about 89F to 91F, with afternoon storms on 10 to 12 days a month. Golf is in its low-rate season. The plan that works is golf at dawn, beach in the late morning, and indoors or in the pool when the storms build.

June88.982.69.7
July90.984.811.2
August90.686.212.4

May is the sweet spot if school allows: the driest spring month with warm water. Crowds thin once Southern schools restart in early August. Our Destin summer golf guide covers summer golf in more detail, and hurricane season starts June 1.

Off the course with kids

  • Gulfarium Marine Adventure Park on Okaloosa Island: dolphin and sea-lion shows.
  • Emerald Coast Science Center in Fort Walton Beach: hands-on children's science museum.
  • Big Kahuna's Water and Adventure Park in central Destin: water park and go-karts, summer only.
  • Crab Island: a boat trip to the sandbar, best April to October.
  • Henderson Beach and Topsail Hill state parks: quiet dune beaches.

Questions golfers ask

What is the best golf course for kids near Destin?

Origins at Watersound on east 30A is a public family short course: a six-hole regulation loop of 1,852 yards or a ten-hole par-3 routing, with FootGolf in the afternoons. An August 2026 GolfNow deal was about $61 with cart. Nearer Destin, Seascape's nine holes ran $22 to $35 in late October 2026.

Is there a free par 3 for families in Destin?

Yes, but only for guests of the Sandpiper Cove condo resort, whose nine-hole par-3 course is described in rental listings as complimentary for resort guests, with clubs to rent at the clubhouse for a small fee. There is no public tee sheet. It suits kids and short-game practice, not a full round.

Which Destin courses have junior or very short tees?

Baytowne at Sandestin has a Jr tee of 3,002 yards, slope 92 for men and 100 for women. Kelly Plantation's Anderson tees play 4,096 yards, Rocky Bayou's Teal tees 4,135 and Legacy's Yellow tees in Panama City Beach 4,019. Those let a family play the same course from very different distances.

Do kids get cheaper golf in Destin?

At some courses. The Fort Walton Beach city club charges public juniors 50 percent of the dynamic rate. Signal Hill in Panama City Beach lists juniors at $16 walking or $26 with cart for 18. Prices change, so check when you book.

Where should a family stay for golf and the beach in Destin?

Inside Sandestin, a condo puts you on the tram to the beach, Baytowne Wharf and four courses, with Baytowne's junior tee. The Hilton Sandestin gives kids 12 and under free breakfast with a paying adult. On Okaloosa Island, the Holiday Inn Resort has Kids' Suites, a lazy-river pool and a heated indoor pool.

When is the best time for a family golf trip to Destin?

Summer is the family beach season, with Gulf water around 83F to 86F, but it is hot and stormy and rooms are at their highest. Golf rates are low in summer, so play at dawn. Late spring, May in particular, gives warm water near 78F and drier weather before school holidays peak.

What can kids do in Destin besides golf?

The Gulfarium on Okaloosa Island has dolphin and sea-lion shows, the Emerald Coast Science Center in Fort Walton Beach is hands-on, and Big Kahuna's water park in Destin opens in summer. Crab Island boat trips run best from April to October.
