Guide emblem: Destin summer golf: how to play the heat, the storms and the family beach weeks

Destin summer golf means dawn tee times. From June to August, highs run 89F to 91F with nights of 74F to 76F, and afternoon storms hit on about 10 to 12 days a month. Tee sheets are open early and many daily-fee courses are in their low-rate season, but rooms and traffic are at their peak, and August brings aeration closures.

Summer is the Emerald Coast's busiest season for beaches, not golf. That works in a golfer's favour early in the day. Here is how the heat, storms, prices and closures play out, and how to fit golf into a family beach week.

Quick facts

  • Heat: June 88.9F, July 90.9F, August 90.6F average highs.
  • Storms: afternoons, about 10 to 12 days a month at the beach, more inland.
  • Best tee times: dawn.
  • Rates: low season at many daily-fee courses; Sandestin's Raven, Links and Burnt Pine stay at spring prices.
  • Aeration: most courses aerify greens June to August; Sandestin closures in early to mid-August.
  • Hurricane season: from June 1; risk rising in August.

Heat and storms: play early

July is the hottest month by the normals, about 91F with nights near 76F and the lightest winds of the year, so expect little breeze. The storms come in the afternoon. Sea-breeze storms tend to build just inland of the beach, which is why Niceville averages 8.91 inches in July against 5.77 at Destin.

The plan is simple: book the first tee times of the day, especially at the long, water-heavy courses. Kelly Plantation has water on most holes and Regatta Bay has forced carries over water and marsh; both include carts per GolfNow. See the Regatta Bay course guide. Courses north of the bay, such as Bluewater Bay and Rocky Bayou, sit in the wetter zone, so afternoon rounds there are the most likely to be cut short. See Destin weather by month.

The research's general rule is that summer is golf's low-rate season, and the city courses and Emerald Bay fit it. Kelly Plantation does not: its August morning deal was well above its late-October prices. At Sandestin, Baytowne is the only course whose summer price sits below spring. See Destin golf rates and the Kelly Plantation course guide.

August: aeration and recovery weeks

Many bermuda courses aerify greens between June and August, sometimes closing or going cart-path-only for a few days. Sandestin's 2026 August schedule:

  • Burnt Pine: closed August 3-9, then $115 August 10-23.
  • The Links: closed August 4-10, then $69 August 11-24.
  • The Raven: closed an August week (August 10-16 listed), then $89 August 17-30.
  • Baytowne: closed August 11-17, then $69 August 18-31.

GolfPass reviewers in late August 2026 also found aerated greens at Kelly Plantation and at Indian Bayou, where one was sent round the back nine twice. If putting surfaces matter, play in June or July, or call ahead in August. See Destin golf winter conditions for the full turf calendar.

Golf on a family beach week

Summer is family beach season, and a few courses suit kids or beginners:

  • Origins on east 30A, the only public course in the St. Joe group: a six-hole regulation loop or a ten-hole par-3 routing, with FootGolf daily in the afternoon. An August 2026 GolfNow deal was about $61 with cart. Closed Wednesdays.
  • Seascape in Miramar Beach: a short 9-hole resort course, $21.99-$34.99 in late October 2026, nine holes in under 1.5 hours. Recent reviews rate conditions poorly.
  • Sandpiper Cove: a free nine-hole par 3 for guests of the Sandpiper Cove condo resort only.
  • Baytowne: a 3,002-yard junior tee and a beginners' tee set at Sandestin.

Signal Hill in Panama City Beach allows walking, with a summer 2026 rate card of $75 with cart or $62 walking and twilight from 2 PM at $65.50 or $52.50. It is about 75 minutes from Destin, so only for families already in Panama City Beach. Off the course, Crab Island is best from April to October and Big Kahuna's water park opens in summer only. See things to do in Destin and the Destin family golf vacation guide.

Crowds, traffic and rooms

Memorial Day weekend (May 31, 2027) to early August is the area's peak for room rates, with week-long, often Saturday-to-Saturday, minimum stays common in beach condos. July 4 week and June-July Saturdays are the worst for traffic on US 98, US 331 and 30A, and Crab Island is crowded on weekends. Add 20 to 60 minutes or more to drive times on those Saturdays. Crowds thin once Southern schools restart in early August, while golf rates stay at summer lows.

Hurricane season

Hurricane season opens June 1. For the Panhandle the main risk is August to October, so June and July carry less storm risk than late summer. For an August trip, check lodging cancellation terms and consider travel insurance. See Destin hurricane season.

Destin summer golf checklist

  1. Book the first tee times of the day.
  2. Avoid Sandestin's August aeration weeks, or take the recovery rate knowingly.
  3. Arrive midweek to dodge Saturday changeover traffic.
  4. Keep afternoons for the beach, or the pool when storms roll in.
  5. For the best rates, look at the Fort Walton Beach courses and Emerald Bay.
