Average high by month: Destin weather by month, read for golf: heat, rain, wind and water

Destin weather by month runs from mild winters (January averages 63.1F by day, 45.3F at night) to hot, stormy summers (July averages 90.9F). October is the driest month at 2.82 inches, and August the wettest at 6.08. For golf, that means spring and fall are prime, summer needs dawn tee times and winter needs a layer for the morning.

The figures below are NOAA's 1991-2020 climate normals for Destin Executive Airport, on US 98 just east of the harbor, the only first-order coastal station in the area. They are averages, not forecasts. We add wind from the airport's 2016-2025 daily data, inland figures from Niceville, and Gulf water temperatures from the nearest gauge.

Quick facts

  • Hottest month: July, 90.9F high, 76.2F low.

Temperatures and rain: NOAA 1991-2020 normals, Destin Executive Airport. Rain days: days with at least 0.01 inch. Wind: mean daily wind at the airport, 2016-2025, not a NOAA normal. Water: Panama City Beach gauge, 2016-2025 monthly means, computed by us.

Heat: when to tee off

From June to September, highs sit between 88.5F and 90.9F and nights stay at 72-76F, with high humidity. Morning is the time to play: tee sheets are open at dawn in summer, and the heat and afternoon storms both build later in the day. Courses with water on most holes, such as Kelly Plantation and Regatta Bay, are long, carted rounds in the heat; cart is included at both per GolfNow. See Destin summer golf.

Rain: storms, not washouts

Destin's summer rain mostly comes as afternoon storms. June to August see rain on about 10 to 12 days a month. The sea-breeze storms tend to build just inland of the beach, which is why the inland stations are much wetter: Niceville averages about 73 inches a year against about 55 at Destin, with 8.91 inches in July and 9.21 in August.

That matters for the courses north of the bay. Bluewater Bay and Rocky Bayou in Niceville and Windswept Dunes at Freeport sit in the wetter zone. Treat the beach rain figures as indicative; the research notes Destin's normal is well below nearby stations.

The dry window is October (2.82 inches) and May (3.22 inches), the two best months to plan around. See the best time to golf in Destin.

Wind: the defence on the bay holes

Destin is breezy from late fall through spring. January (7.7 mph) and March (7.6 mph) are the windiest months, and July (4.4 mph) the calmest. On exposed courses this changes how you play. The Links at Sandestin has five holes along Choctawhatchee Bay, and the course record calls wind its main defence; go early before the afternoon sea breeze if you want a score. Part of Emerald Bay's back nine also runs along the bay. See the Links course guide.

Beach vs inland: the same month, two climates

The courses on the map split between the beach strip (Destin, Sandestin, 30A) and the north shore of Choctawhatchee Bay (Niceville, Bluewater Bay, Freeport). NOAA's Niceville co-op station shows how different they are:

Month Destin high / low (F) Niceville high / low (F) Destin rain (in) Niceville rain (in)
Jan63.1 / 45.361.2 / 38.04.525.86
Mar70.7 / 53.670.2 / 46.44.705.35
Apr76.2 / 60.176.2 / 53.04.555.99
Jul90.9 / 76.289.9 / 71.75.778.91
Aug90.6 / 75.889.7 / 71.56.089.21
Oct80.9 / 63.280.2 / 56.52.824.60
Dec65.6 / 47.563.8 / 41.04.725.68

By day the two are close. At night, and in summer rain, they are not. A winter morning tee time in Niceville can start about 7F colder than one at Sandestin, and a July afternoon there is more likely to be rained out.

Cold mornings and frost

Winter at the beach is mild: highs of 63-66F from December to February and lows of 45-48F. North of the bay it is colder at night. Niceville's normals are 61.2F and 38.0F in January and 63.8F and 41.0F in December, and frost delays are possible on winter mornings. Crestview, about 25 miles inland, runs about 6F colder at night in winter too.

For golf, that means mid-morning tee times in winter, especially at Bluewater Bay, Rocky Bayou or Blackwater in Crestview. Non-overseeded bermuda is dormant and tan in winter but playable. See Destin golf winter conditions.

Hurricanes

The Atlantic hurricane season runs June 1 to November 30. For the Florida Panhandle the main risk window is August to October, with the statistical peak around September 10. Recent storms on this stretch include Michael (October 10, 2018), Sally (September 16, 2020) and Hurricane Isaias, which made landfall near Destin on October 9, 2026 as a Category 2 at about 105 mph. After Isaias almost all of Destin lost power, and courses reopened in stages: Camp Creek ran its front nine only from October 17, 2026. For August to October trips, check cancellation terms and consider travel insurance. See Destin hurricane season.
