Destin hurricane season runs from June 1 to November 30, and the Florida Panhandle's main risk window is August to October, peaking around September 10. That does not rule out a golf trip. It means flexible bookings, a watch on the forecast, and checking course status after any storm. Hurricane Isaias hit near Destin on October 9, 2026.
This guide sets out the plain facts for a June to November trip: the weather by month, what Isaias did to the golf, which weeks courses close anyway for aeration, and how to book so a storm costs you as little as possible.
Quick facts
- Season: June 1 to November 30 (Atlantic hurricane season).
- Main risk on this coast: August to October; Atlantic peak around September 10.
- Latest hit: Hurricane Isaias, Category 2, landfall near Destin on October 9, 2026.
- Driest month: October, about 2.8 inches of rain on about six days (NOAA 1991-2020 normals).
- Time zone: Central Time.
- Summer golf: low green-fee season, but many bermuda courses aerify greens June to August.
Destin hurricane season month by month
These are the NOAA 1991-2020 normals for the Destin-Fort Walton Beach station at Destin Executive Airport, with Gulf water temperatures from the Panama City Beach gauge (2016-2025 average), the closest open-Gulf reading.
| Month | High (F) | Low (F) | Rain (in) | Rain days | Gulf water (F) |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| June | 88.9 | 74.1 | 4.70 | 9.7 | 82.6 |
| July | 90.9 | 76.2 | 5.77 | 11.2 | 84.8 |
| August | 90.6 | 75.8 | 6.08 | 12.4 | 86.2 |
| September | 88.5 | 72.4 | 5.18 | 8.2 | 84.4 |
| October | 80.9 | 63.2 | 2.82 | 6.1 | 78.6 |
| November | 72.1 | 53.0 | 4.13 | 8.9 | 71.0 |
June and July are about heat and afternoon thunderstorms more than hurricanes. August is the wettest month at the beach. September is hot and sits at the statistical peak. October is the best golf month of the fall and the driest of the year, and November cools into very good golf weather as the season closes. North of the bay at Niceville, summer is much wetter: about 8.9 inches in July and 9.2 in August.

Recent hurricanes on the Emerald Coast
Three storms in the last decade shape how locals think about the season:
- Hurricane Michael (October 10, 2018): Category 5 landfall at Mexico Beach, about 75 miles east of 30A. It was catastrophic in Panama City, with lesser effects around Destin. It also ended golf at two Panama City Beach courses: Hombre Golf Club closed for good in October 2018, and the Meadows course at Bay Point closed and has not reopened.
- Hurricane Sally (September 16, 2020): Category 2 landfall at Gulf Shores, Alabama, with severe flooding in Pensacola and rain and surge west of Destin.
- Hurricane Isaias (October 9, 2026): Category 2, about 105 mph, landfall near Destin. Surge overtopped beach walkways, almost all of Destin lost power, roads were blocked by trees and debris, and Okaloosa Island and Fort Walton Beach had wind damage. Debris and signal outages slowed US 98 for days.
What Isaias did to the golf
Course status after Isaias is the most useful thing to check before a late-2026 trip. This is what our course research found in late October 2026:
| Course | Status after Isaias (late Oct 2026) |
|---|---|
| Camp Creek | Front nine only from Oct 17, 2026; full 18 pending tree removal |
| Shark's Tooth | Closed until further notice |
| The Third | Among the first Watersound Club courses to reopen |
| Origins | Among the first to reopen |
| Bluewater Bay | Open; an Oct 2026 reviewer reported hurricane damage on the Marsh nine |
| Bay Point Nicklaus | Open; golf shop storm-damaged, reopening |
| The Raven | Open, per a Sandestin storm-centre page listing all four Sandestin courses as operational; no damage reported |
St. Joe reported its Walton and Bay county hotels and restaurants open within days of the storm, with beach access limited by erosion and boardwalk damage. Our season research also notes that post-storm tree and debris cleanup may delay or skip this year's overseed at some courses. Restaurants and attractions were not re-checked one by one, so confirm before you go. Whether the October Destin Fishing Rodeo carried on unchanged after the storm was not confirmed.
If your trip centres on the private St. Joe courses, read our Watersound Club golf guide and call the inn before you book.
Aeration weeks: the closures that are not storms
In summer, planned maintenance is a bigger threat to a good round than the weather. Sandestin publishes its 2026 dates, followed by cheaper recovery weeks while greens heal:
| Course | Summer 2026 aeration closure | Recovery rate after |
|---|---|---|
| Baytowne | Aug 11-17 | $69, Aug 18-31 |
| The Links | Aug 4-10 | $69, Aug 11-24 |
| The Raven | Aug 10-16 listed (Aug 3-9 missing from the table) | $89, Aug 17-30 |
| Burnt Pine | Aug 3-9 | $115, Aug 10-23 |
Sandestin also lists May aeration weeks for all four courses. Elsewhere, dates are mostly not published: Indian Bayou sent a reviewer round the back nine twice on aerated greens in late August 2026, and Kelly Plantation had aerated greens in an August 24, 2026 review. Ask when you book. Our Destin golf winter conditions guide covers aeration and overseed in more detail.
What golf costs in hurricane season
Summer is the low-rate golf season even though beach rooms are at their highest. Sandestin's 2026 table, public rate and resort-guest rate:
- Baytowne: $99 / $75 in summer and fall, against $119 / $95 in spring.
- The Links: $119 / $95 in summer and fall, the same as spring.
- The Raven: $159 / $130 in spring, summer and fall alike.
Kelly Plantation's GolfNow Hot Deal for an August 9, 2026 morning was $160.99 with cart, while late-October deals ran about $90 to $119. Prices seen October 2026; rates change. See Destin golf rates for the full course-by-course picture, or the Raven course guide and Kelly Plantation course guide for those two.
How to book a June to November trip
The aim is to keep a storm from costing you money you cannot get back.
- Read the lodging cancellation terms first. Sandestin refunds the deposit only if you cancel 8 or more days out; inside 7 days you forfeit the whole reservation. The Henderson Beach Resort keeps one night if you cancel within 7 days. Camping on the Gulf owes full rent unless you cancel at least 7 days ahead, but gives an evacuation credit valid for one year.
- Be careful with prepaid tee times. GolfNow Hot Deals at courses such as Windswept Dunes and Bluewater Bay are prepaid and refundable only with 24 or more hours' notice. The Fort Walton Beach city club charges 50 percent of the booking for a no-show or a cancellation inside 24 hours.
- Consider travel insurance for August to October. A storm can close courses for days to weeks.
- Check course status the week before. After Isaias, several courses changed status within days.
- Play early. Summer storms tend to build in the afternoon, and dawn tee times beat the heat. Our Destin summer golf guide has more on that.
The Mississippi coast faces the same season. Our Biloxi hurricane season golf guide covers that side of the Gulf.
Is it worth going in the fall?
For many golfers, yes. After Labor Day the beach empties and prices fall while the water stays warm, and October is the second peak golf season of the year. The trade-off is the risk window. A trip in early November gets fall weather with the riskiest weeks behind you, but note that Sandestin closes Baytowne (November 2-8, 2026) and the Links (November 3-9, 2026) to overseed greens. Our Destin golf in October guide covers the fall peak in detail.

Questions golfers ask
When is hurricane season in Destin?
The Atlantic hurricane season runs June 1 to November 30. For the Florida Panhandle the main risk window is August to October, and the Atlantic statistical peak falls around September 10. June, July and November carry less risk, but storms are possible in any of the six months.
Did a hurricane hit Destin in 2026?
Yes. Hurricane Isaias made landfall near Destin late on Friday, October 9, 2026, as a Category 2 storm of about 105 mph. Surge overtopped beach walkways in Destin, almost all of Destin lost power, and Okaloosa Island and Fort Walton Beach had wind damage. Walton County power was about 80 percent restored by October 12.
Are the Destin golf courses open after Hurricane Isaias?
Most are, but check course by course. In late October 2026 Shark's Tooth was closed until further notice and Camp Creek was playing its front nine only from October 17. The Third and Origins reopened first among the Watersound Club courses. No Isaias damage was reported at the Raven, though our research could not confirm every course.
Is September a bad time for a Destin golf trip?
September is still hot, with normal highs near 89F, and it sits at the peak of the hurricane season. After Labor Day beach rates fall, so it can be good value if you accept the risk and book flexible lodging. October is drier, with about 2.8 inches of rain on six days, but Isaias showed it is not risk-free.
Should I buy travel insurance for a fall Destin golf trip?
For August to October trips our season research suggests checking lodging cancellation terms and considering travel insurance, because a storm can close courses for days to weeks. Many cancellation policies are strict: Sandestin forfeits the whole reservation inside 7 days, for example.
What is the weather like in Destin in hurricane season?
Hot and humid from June to September, with normal highs of about 89F to 91F and afternoon storms on 8 to 12 days a month at the beach. October cools to about 81F and is the driest month. November highs average about 72F, and the season ends on November 30.
Do golf rates drop in Destin during hurricane season?
Summer is a low-rate golf season even though rooms are at their highest. In 2026 Baytowne was $99 public and $75 for resort guests in summer and fall, against $119 and $95 in spring. The Raven kept the same $159 public rate in spring, summer and fall.
