Fact box: Hurricane season and Biloxi golf: the real risk, and how to plan around it

Hurricane season in Biloxi runs June 1 to November 30, but the main risk for the Mississippi coast is August to October, peaking around September 10. For golf trips, that means June, July and November carry less storm risk, and an August to October trip needs flexible bookings, a look at cancellation terms and possibly travel insurance.

This guide covers what the hurricane season really means for a Biloxi golf trip: the risk by month, recent storms and how they affected the coast, what Katrina did to the courses, the cancellation rules at the courses and hotels, and a practical way to book. It is not a forecast. Before any trip in season, check the National Hurricane Center and your bookings' terms.

Quick facts

  • Season: June 1 to November 30.
  • Main risk window on the Mississippi coast: August to October.
  • Atlantic peak: around September 10.

What recent storms did to the coast

  • Hurricane Katrina made landfall on August 29, 2005 near the Louisiana-Mississippi border as a Category 3. It pushed the highest storm surge recorded in the US onto the Mississippi coast, roughly 24-28 feet from Hancock to Harrison County, destroyed the casino barges and most of the beachfront, and closed several golf courses for good. The casinos were later rebuilt on land.
  • Hurricane Zeta (October 28, 2020, landfall in Cocodrie, Louisiana) crossed southeast Louisiana and the Mississippi coast with widespread outages.
  • Ida (August 2021) and Francine (September 2024) brought surge and outages from Louisiana landfalls.
  • Hurricane Isaias (October 8-10, 2026, a Category 2 landfall in the western Florida Panhandle) gave the coast tropical-storm gusts of 47 knots at Pascagoula and 41 knots at Gulfport airport, closed low coastal roads with surge and cancelled some Cruisin' the Coast events, including the Super Saturday concert and fireworks. There were no fatalities.

The storms since Katrina in our research brought outages, surge road closures and cancelled events rather than Katrina-scale damage. Even so, a storm can close courses for days to weeks.

How Katrina changed Biloxi golf

The coast's golf map still shows Katrina. Broadwater's Sun course in Biloxi did not reopen after the storm, and Edgewater Bay was listed as damaged beyond economical repair. Other courses came back:

  • Bay Breeze at Keesler AFB lost its grass and hundreds of trees to saltwater. A $4.5 million restoration reopened it in November 2007 on the same layout, and new greens opened in 2022.
  • The Bridges at Hollywood Casino in Bay St. Louis reopened about four months after Katrina, which is why some listings give 2006 as its opening year. See our The Bridges course guide.
  • Pass Christian Isles, the 1914 Tom Bendelow course, was rebuilt after Katrina keeping the original design. See our Pass Christian Isles course guide.

Cancellation rules that matter in storm season

What you get back if a storm threatens depends on the small print of each booking. These are the terms in our research, seen October 2026:

Booking Cancellation rule
The Oaks tee timeCancel 48+ hours ahead or the card on file is charged
The Preserve tee time48-hour cancellation policy
Windance via GolfNow Hot DealPrepaid; refundable only if cancelled 24+ hours ahead
Island View Unlimited Golf packagePrepaid; refundable if cancelled 72 hours before arrival

Most other courses and hotels did not publish their terms in our research, so ask when you book. In August to October, a booking you can cancel 24 to 72 hours out leaves you more room than a non-refundable one.

Travel insurance and refunds

Our season research suggests two steps for August to October trips: check lodging cancellation terms and consider travel insurance. We have no insurance policy data of our own, so read what a policy covers for storms and prepaid golf before you buy.

How to plan a golf trip in hurricane season

  1. Pick the lower-risk months. June, July and November are outside the main window. Late October and November give you the best weather with the season winding down.
  2. Book flexible rooms. Casino hotels are cheaper Sunday to Thursday, and a refundable midweek rate costs less to hold.
  3. Keep tee times cancellable. Book direct on the course's own sheet rather than prepaid deals inside the risk window.
  4. Watch the tropics before you travel. Hurricane Isaias reached the coast on October 8-10, 2026, in the middle of Cruisin' the Coast week.
  5. Know the roads. I-10 runs 5 to 8 miles inland, while US 90 runs along the beach, and low coastal roads can close for surge in a tropical storm.
  6. Have a rain plan. Casinos, the Mississippi Aquarium and Margaritaville's golf simulators cover a lost afternoon. See rainy day in Biloxi.

What happens to golf after a storm

The research shows a range of outcomes. After Katrina, The Bridges took about four months to reopen and Bay Breeze more than two years, while smaller storms since have mostly meant outages, surge closures on low roads and cancelled events. Isaias in October 2026 cancelled parts of Cruisin' the Coast and closed the Pascagoula venue for a day. If a storm passes just before your trip, call each course before you drive out. The inland courses around Saucier, Fallen Oak (Beau Rivage guests only) and Grand Bear, sit north of I-10, away from the beach road.

Should you go between June and November?

For most golfers, yes, with care. October is the best weather month on the coast and November is quiet and pleasant, both inside the season. To stay outside the season entirely, go from December to May; our best time to golf in Biloxi weighs the options. Summer details are in Biloxi summer golf, and the October event week is in Cruisin' the Coast golf. Check Biloxi golf rates for fall prices, and the Biloxi weather by month guide for the normals.

Plan it on the map

Questions golfers ask

When is hurricane season in Biloxi?

June 1 to November 30, the Atlantic hurricane season. For the Mississippi coast the main risk window is August to October, and the Atlantic statistical peak is around September 10.

Should I avoid Biloxi golf trips during hurricane season?

Not the whole season. June, July and November sit outside the main August-to-October risk window, and October is the driest, most comfortable golf month on the coast. For August to October trips, check cancellation terms and consider travel insurance rather than staying home.

Do I need travel insurance for a Biloxi golf trip?

It is worth considering for August to October trips, when a storm can close courses for days to weeks. Read what the policy covers before you buy, and check the cancellation rules of your hotel and tee times, since those decide what you get back.

What are the cancellation rules at Biloxi golf courses?

They vary. The Oaks and The Preserve require 48 hours' notice, GolfNow Hot Deals at Windance are refundable only 24 or more hours ahead, and Island View's Unlimited Golf package at Windance is refundable if cancelled 72 hours before arrival. Check each booking's terms.

Has a hurricane hit Biloxi recently?

Nothing in our research since Katrina did comparable damage, but storms have affected the coast. Hurricane Isaias, which made landfall in the western Florida Panhandle on October 8-10, 2026, brought tropical-storm gusts, surge road closures and some cancelled Cruisin' the Coast events, with no fatalities. Zeta (2020), Ida (2021) and Francine (2024) brought surge and outages from Louisiana landfalls.

Which Biloxi golf courses were damaged by Hurricane Katrina?

Katrina closed several coast courses for good, including Broadwater's Sun course and Edgewater Bay in Biloxi. Bay Breeze at Keesler reopened in November 2007 after a $4.5 million restoration, The Bridges reopened about four months after the storm, and Pass Christian Isles was rebuilt keeping its original design.

Is September a good month for a Biloxi golf trip?

It is a value month with risk. Highs are still about 87F and golf is still in its low-rate summer season, but September is the Atlantic hurricane peak. Book flexible rates if you go.
