Great Southern Golf Club, Gulfport
Great Southern was Mississippi's oldest golf course, on the Gulfport beachfront at 2000 Beach Dr, overlooking the Mississippi Sound. The original nine dates to 1908. Wikipedia credits Charles Nieman, though it is often credited to Donald Ross. Brian Curley renovated it in 1999. From the 1960s to the 1990s it was known as the Broadwater Sea Course.
Hurricane Katrina destroyed the clubhouse in 2005, and a new one opened in 2013. The club filed for Chapter 11 in 2019. In 2021 the 129-acre site was sold at a foreclosure auction to a Florida residential developer (Arbor Sites / Arbor Properties), which planned about 400 homes. WLOX reported in July 2021 that the front nine would close on April 30, 2022, with the course north of the railroad tracks leased until June 2023. The club announced its closure for May 9, 2022.
What replaced it is not settled. TurfNet reported that soil and groundwater contamination stalled the redevelopment, and the final closing date of the north nine after its lease is unconfirmed. Do not confuse it with the Great Southern Club, a private dining and event club in downtown Gulfport that is still operating.
Play instead: Pass Christian Isles inherited the "oldest course" title. It is a 1914 Bendelow layout at $36 to $52 with a cart in October 2026. Our Pass Christian Isles guide covers it.
Gulf Hills Golf Club, Ocean Springs
Gulf Hills opened in 1927, with the original 18 credited to Jack Daray. It sits on Fort Bayou beside the historic hotel of the same name. The 18-hole club closed in late October 2019 when funds ran out, according to WLOX.
In December 2019, shareholders approved a sale on condition that the buyer keep at least nine holes, planned as holes 2, 3, 6, 7, 8, 9, 16, 17 and 18. GolfPass describes a redesigned nine-hole executive course from 2020 and a driving range new in 2021. Hole19 has reviews dated April 2024 and May 2025, and Yelp lists hours of 8 AM to 7 PM, closed Tuesday.
That is as far as the evidence goes. No official website, tee sheet or rate card was found, so treat the nine as unconfirmed and call before you go. Old directory rates of $50 to $55 for 18 predate the closure.
The Gulf Hills Hotel + Resort still operates. Its 2-queen rooms were $117 to $127 on Tuesday November 10, 2026, before tax, and it had no golf package on its offers page in October 2026. Our guide to Ocean Springs golf covers the courses that are open around it.
Tramark: renamed, not closed
Many golfers searching for Tramark think it closed. It did not. Gulfport's city-owned Tramark course, opened in 1957, now runs as Bayou Vista Golf Course. Coast Golf LLC has operated it since April 1, 2017, and has added new tee boxes and bunkers, rebuilt greens and opened a new clubhouse with a full bar.
It was $28 for 18 holes with a cart on October 25, 2026, the cheapest 18 on the coast. Our Bayou Vista guide and Bayou Vista course guide have the details.
The Katrina-era closures
Hurricane Katrina made landfall on August 29, 2005, near the Louisiana-Mississippi border as a Category 3. It pushed the highest storm surge recorded in the US onto the Mississippi coast, roughly 24 to 28 feet from Hancock to Harrison County, destroyed the casino barges and most of the beachfront, and closed several coast golf courses for good.
President Broadwater Sun Course, Biloxi
The Broadwater Beach resort's Sun Course was on Beauvoir Road. Foretee credits Earl Stone and gives 1967; Wikipedia dates it to 1968. The resort closed on July 31, 2005, Katrina destroyed it weeks later, and the course never reopened. The site has stood empty since; a 2020 Universal Music Group venture proposed a hotel and entertainment destination there. The Broadwater's other course, the Sea Course, became Great Southern.
Edgewater Bay Golf Club, Biloxi
Edgewater began as the Edgewater Gulf Hotel's golf club on Pass Road. Foretee credits Harry Collis and Jack Daray, and the Biloxi Historical Society credits Harry J. Collis, 1926 (other sources say 1930). Foretee lists it as closed in 2005, "damaged beyond economical repair" by Katrina. No current listing exists.
Gulfport Par 3
The 18-hole par-3 course on 34th Street opened in 1964 and played about 2,400 yards. Foretee lists it as closed in 2005, and GolfPass and Google agree it is closed. 2005 is the Katrina year, but no source states that Katrina caused the closure.
The courses that came back
Not every course was lost. The Bridges in Bay St. Louis reopened about four months after Katrina. Bay Breeze at Keesler AFB lost its grass and hundreds of trees to saltwater, and a $4.5 million restoration reopened it in November 2007 on the same layout. Pass Christian Isles was rebuilt keeping its original design. Our Bridges course guide and our guide to Bay Breeze at Keesler cover those two.
Other closed courses
Dogwood Hills Golf Club, Biloxi
An 18-hole daily-fee course in Woolmarket, north of I-10, opened in 1991 and credited to Brent Williams by GolfPass. Google marks it permanently closed, the club website returns an empty page, and Zillow lists lots on Dogwood Hills Drive. GolfPass and GolfNow pages still describe it as open; they are stale. The closing year is not known.
St. Andrews Golf Club, Ocean Springs
An 18-hole course at 2 Golfing Green Dr that opened in 1969. GolfPass says it is "closed for business" and Yelp titles its page closed. No booking site, tee sheet or Google listing was found. Old directories still list a phone number and a $50 green fee; do not rely on them. The closing year and cause are unknown.
Pine Bayou Golf Course, Gulfport
The Navy MWR course on the Naval Construction Battalion Center (Seabee base), credited to Willard C. Byrd. Foretee lists it as closed in 2011, and GolfPass and Google agree. GolfNow still shows a stale entry with no tee times.
