Fact box: Destin golf in winter: what to expect from December to February

Destin golf in winter is cool, quiet and cheap. From December to February, beach highs run 63F to 66F with lows of 45F to 48F, rates are at their lowest of the year outside Christmas-New Year week, and Sandestin's winter rates cut $26 to $50 a round at The Raven, The Links and Burnt Pine. Non-overseeded bermuda goes dormant and tan but stays playable.

It is not summer golf. Rain falls on about 9 to 11 days a month, January is the windiest month, and nights north of the bay can bring frost. But for golfers who want open tee sheets, cheap rounds and a mild coast, winter is the value season.

Quick facts

What winter golf costs

Winter is when Destin golf rates fall. Sandestin's 2026 table:

Course Winter dates Public Resort guest Snowbird card
The RavenJan 1-Mar 5, Nov 2-Dec 31$109$95$65 + tax (Nov-Dec 2026)
BaytowneJan 1-Mar 5, Nov 23-Dec 31$99$75$45 + tax (Nov-Jan), $49 (Feb-Mar)

Burnt PineJan 1-Mar 5, Nov 2-Dec 31Not sold$149Not included

The Snowbird card is for extended stays booked directly with Sandestin Rentals, with a 7-day booking window. Renters through other agencies (28+ nights) can use the Winter Player's Club: $50 plus tax at The Links and Baytowne and $75 at The Raven, November-December 2026, with a 5-day window. Both cards add 9 holes after 1 PM at half rate. See the Raven course guide and Sandestin golf packages.

Elsewhere, few courses publish winter rates. Kelly Plantation, Regatta Bay and Indian Bayou price dynamically, and winter figures were not captured. West of Destin, Shalimar Pointe sells a snowbird membership from October 1 to March 31: single $450 for a month, $800 for two, $1,150 for three and $1,800 for six, with unlimited golf and cart and four-week booking. The city's Fort Walton Beach Golf Club advertises a Snowbird Membership Special, terms not published, and runs free-to-join Winter Spark 9-hole social leagues on Thursdays from November 5 and Sundays from November 8, 2026.

Course conditions: dormant, overseeded, frosty

Most Emerald Coast courses are bermuda. Some resort courses overseed with ryegrass in October and November for winter colour; many daily-fee and local courses let the bermuda go dormant from about December to March. Sandestin overseeds the greens at Baytowne and The Links each fall, closing them November 2-8 and November 3-9 in 2026. Hurricane Isaias cleanup may delay or skip some of this year's overseeding.

North of the bay, frost delays are possible on winter mornings. Bluewater Bay and Rocky Bayou in Niceville sit where January lows average 38.0F, about 7F colder than the beach. Book them for late morning or early afternoon. See Destin golf winter conditions.

Short days and tee times

Winter days are short, and some schedules show it. Gator Lakes on Hurlburt Field keeps its pro shop open 6:30 AM to 4:30 PM from November to February, two hours less than in summer; the course is open dawn to dusk. At Burnt Pine, Sandestin resort guests can only book after 1 PM, so ask for the first slot after 1.

Weekday mornings are the busiest winter tee times at local-favourite courses, because of snowbirds and senior leagues. Indian Bayou, about 9 minutes from the harbor, is known for quick pace and had afternoon deals from $74.99 in late October 2026. See the Indian Bayou course guide.

Where to stay for a winter trip

For a short winter trip, hotel rates are at their lowest outside the holidays, and fall and winter bring short-stay availability without the week-long summer minimums. For a month or more:

  • Sandestin's Winter Guest package (28+ nights, October to March) waives resort fees, and extended stays booked directly with Sandestin Rentals qualify for the Snowbird card.
  • Newman-Dailey snowbird rentals advertise monthly winter rates from $1,875 a month for November, plus fees and taxes, on an undated page; utilities and internet are included and the headline rate needs two months.
  • Destin RV Beach Resort in Miramar Beach lists a 1-bedroom condo at $2,150 a month, November 1, 2026 to February 28, 2027, 30-night minimum.

A sample winter week

One way to string together a week of Destin golf in winter, using published winter prices where they exist:

  1. Monday: The Links on the Snowbird card ($45 plus tax) or at the $69 guest rate, early, before the afternoon sea breeze off the bay.
  2. Tuesday: Indian Bayou, an afternoon time for value.
  3. Wednesday: rest day; Henderson Beach State Park or the harbor.
  4. Thursday: Shalimar Pointe, or a Winter Spark 9-hole league round at the Fort Walton Beach Golf Club.
  5. Friday: Burnt Pine at $149 for guests, first slot after 1 PM.
  6. Saturday: Baytowne, $45 on the Snowbird card or $75 guest.

That keeps the Niceville courses for milder afternoons and puts the Sandestin rounds on the days a card or guest rate applies. For a longer stay, repeat and vary the week; see the snowbird golf schedule for Destin.

Events worth knowing

  • Christmas-New Year week: family rental demand and higher rates.
  • 30A Songwriters Festival: January 15-18, 2027, MLK weekend, with the main stage at Grand Boulevard in Miramar Beach. It fills 30A and Grand Boulevard lodging but has little effect on golf.
  • Mardi Gras: Fat Tuesday is February 9, 2027; small local parades in Fort Walton Beach and Destin, minimal hotel effect.
  • Late February: spring golf demand starts building.

Is Destin golf in winter right for you?

Yes, if you value price and open tee sheets over warmth and green fairways. No, if you need 75F afternoons; for that, wait for April. For a winter week, the Kelly Plantation course guide covers the best public course in Destin, and cheap golf in Destin lists the value rounds. Questions golfers ask

Is Destin good for golf in winter?

Yes, for mild, cheap golf. Beach highs run 63F to 66F from December to February, with lows of 45F to 48F, and it is the cheapest time for golf and short stays outside Christmas-New Year week. Non-overseeded bermuda is dormant and tan but playable.

How cold does Destin get in January?

January is the coldest month, with a normal high of 63.1F and a low of 45.3F at the beach. North of the bay at Niceville the low is 38.0F, and frost delays are possible on winter mornings there.

What are Sandestin's winter golf rates?

In 2026: The Raven $109 public or $95 guest from November 2, Burnt Pine $149 for guests, Baytowne $99 public or $75 guest, and The Links $89 public or $69 guest from November 24. Winter runs January 1-March 5 and again from November 2 (The Raven, Burnt Pine) or late November (Baytowne, The Links) to December 31.

Is there a cheaper winter golf deal for long stays?

Yes. Sandestin's Snowbird card for extended stays booked directly with Sandestin Rentals gives The Links and Baytowne at $45 plus tax from November 2026 to January 2027 and $49 in February and March. Shalimar Pointe's snowbird membership costs $450 for one month, single, with unlimited golf and cart.

Is it busy in winter?

How short are the winter days for golf?

Short enough to plan around. Gator Lakes' pro shop closes at 4:30 PM from November to February, against 6:30 PM the rest of the year. At Burnt Pine, where resort-guest tee times are after 1 PM, ask for the first slot after 1 to finish before dark.

Do Destin courses overseed for winter?

Some do. Sandestin overseeds the greens at Baytowne and The Links each fall, closing them in early November. Many daily-fee courses let bermuda go dormant from about December to March, and most courses publish no overseed policy.
