Slope ladder: Where to stay in Destin for golf: Fort Walton Beach, Destin, Sandestin, 30A or Niceville

Where to stay in Destin for golf comes down to which courses you want. East Destin is the best base for the public courses (Regatta Bay, Kelly Plantation, Indian Bayou). Sandestin is the base for resort golf and Burnt Pine. 30A only makes sense for the private St. Joe courses. Okaloosa Island and Niceville are the value ends of the coast.

The Emerald Coast is long and thin, strung along one road. US 98 runs from Fort Walton Beach over the Marler Bridge into Destin, then on through Miramar Beach and Sandestin to 30A. It is six lanes of signals through Destin and badly congested on spring-break and summer Saturdays. Where you sleep decides how much of that road you drive.

Quick facts

  • Best all-round base for public golf: east Destin.
  • Best for resort golf: Sandestin / Miramar Beach.
  • Best for private St. Joe golf: Camp Creek Inn or Watersound Inn on east 30A.
  • Best value, beach included: Okaloosa Island.
  • Best value, no beach: Niceville / Bluewater Bay.
  • Drive times: free-flow estimates; add 20-60+ minutes on busy Saturdays.

East Destin: the best all-round golf base

If your list is public courses, east Destin near Destin Commons is where to stay in Destin for golf. Regatta Bay (slope 147 from the tips), Kelly Plantation and Indian Bayou are 5 to 8 minutes away, and the Mid-Bay Bridge road to Niceville starts nearby.

The plain choice is the Holiday Inn Express: 74 rooms, free breakfast, free parking, not on the beach. The luxury choice is The Henderson Beach Resort, 7 minutes from Kelly Plantation, with a $49 daily fee and paid parking (seen October 2026). For a week or a month, Newman-Dailey's snowbird rentals include condos such as Crystal Dunes by Henderson Beach. See the Kelly Plantation course guide.

Sandestin and Miramar Beach: resort golf

Stay inside Sandestin if you want Burnt Pine or the guest rate at The Raven, Baytowne and The Links. Sandestin resort lodging and the Hilton Sandestin both get the lower rate, and Sandestin guests book six months ahead.

Outside the gates, the Hyatt Place Sandestin at Grand Boulevard is walkable to Grand Boulevard restaurants and 7 minutes from The Raven, with breakfast and parking included per listings. The Embassy Suites Destin Miramar Beach has 155 suites with free parking per listings. Neither gets resort-guest golf rates or Burnt Pine. Our Destin golf resorts comparison covers the resort side.

Okaloosa Island and Fort Walton Beach: value with a beach

Okaloosa Island is the west end of the board, across the Brooks Bridge from Fort Walton Beach. The city-run Fort Walton Beach Golf Club Pines course has new TifEagle greens from 2025 and dynamic rates that often sit in the $40s to $60s. Shalimar Pointe is 19 minutes from the island, with prepaid times around $34-$51 in October 2026.

The Holiday Inn Resort has 152 rooms on the beach, a lazy-river pool and paid parking ($15-20 a night, sources disagree). Next door, the Four Points by Sheraton has 216 rooms, remodeled in 2024 per booking sites. The trade-off is distance from Sandestin: 32 to 39 minutes free-flow. See Fort Walton Beach golf.

Destin Harbor: groups and nightlife

The Emerald Grande has about 280 condo units, 1 to 4 bedrooms, with HarborWalk Village bars at the door. Indian Bayou is 11 minutes away. The fees are the catch: OTA listings show a resort fee of about $45-50 a night plus a $99 service fee and a $245-260 cleaning fee per stay, and the beach is a boat ride away.

30A and Santa Rosa Beach: only for the right golf

East 30A is where the private Watersound Club courses are. Camp Creek Inn sits on Camp Creek and sells rounds there, Shark's Tooth and The Third at $295. Unless that is the trip, a 30A beach stay puts you a long way from Destin golf: from WaterColor Inn, Baytowne is 26 minutes and Kelly Plantation 40.

The exception is the west end. The Home2 Suites, opened 2023, sits on US 98 near Topsail Hill, 7 minutes from Baytowne, with kitchenettes and free breakfast. Read 30A golf for the courses at that end.

Niceville: value north of the bay

The Hampton Inn in Bluewater Bay (about 56 rooms, free breakfast and parking) is 9 minutes from Bluewater Bay and Rocky Bayou. Rocky Bayou is the better-kept course at $109 with cart; Bluewater Bay is cheap but recent reviews describe poor conditions. Destin is over the Mid-Bay Bridge, a toll road ($4 cash, $2-3 SunPass in the FDOT FY2023 report; indexed yearly). Nights are colder here in winter, with January lows about 38F against 45F at the beach. See Niceville golf.

Condo, hotel or RV?

The area matters more than the building, but the type of stay changes the bill.

  • Condos and houses suit foursomes who want one kitchen and one living room. Inside Sandestin, multi-bedroom golf-course townhomes put four golfers minutes from four courses. In beach season, week-long Saturday-to-Saturday minimums are common, and fall and winter bring shorter stays.
  • Chain hotels (Holiday Inn Express, Hampton Inn, Hyatt Place, Home2 Suites) bring free breakfast per their listings, and no resort fee was found at the Holiday Inn Express, Hampton Inn or Hyatt Place, all three with free parking listed. None has a golf deal, so you pay public rates.
  • Resorts add resort fees and parking but can unlock guest rates, which is only worth it at Sandestin or the two St. Joe golf inns.
  • RV parks run from Henderson Beach State Park in east Destin ($30 a night plus fees, seen October 2026, with state park stay limits) to the beachfront Camping on the Gulf in Miramar Beach, which lists from $145 a night on Good Sam. See Destin RV resorts.

Matching a base to a three-course trip

A sensible way to decide where to stay in Destin for golf is to list your three or four courses and add the drive from each base. For Kelly Plantation, Regatta Bay and The Raven, east Destin wins: 7, 5 and 16 minutes from the Holiday Inn Express. For The Raven, Burnt Pine and Baytowne, Sandestin wins easily. For Rocky Bayou, Bluewater Bay and Regatta Bay, the Hampton Inn in Niceville is 9, 9 and 18 minutes. For the city courses plus Shalimar Pointe and Indian Bayou, Okaloosa Island is the closest beach base. The Regatta Bay course guide shows why that course is worth building a trip around.

How to choose

  • Playing Kelly Plantation, Regatta Bay and Indian Bayou: east Destin.
  • Playing Sandestin's courses three or four times: inside Sandestin.
  • Playing the St. Joe courses: Camp Creek Inn or Watersound Inn.
  • Cheapest beach-and-golf week: Okaloosa Island with the Fort Walton Beach and Shalimar courses.
  • Snowbird winter: see Destin snowbird rentals.

Questions golfers ask

What is the best area to stay in Destin for golf?

East Destin, near Destin Commons, is the best all-round base for public golf: Regatta Bay, Kelly Plantation and Indian Bayou are 5 to 8 minutes away and Sandestin is about 15. Choose Sandestin itself if you want resort-guest rates or Burnt Pine.

Is Okaloosa Island a good golf base?

It works for the Fort Walton Beach end of the coast. From the Holiday Inn Resort on Okaloosa Island, the city's Fort Walton Beach Golf Club is about 16 minutes and Shalimar Pointe 19, but Sandestin's courses are 32 to 39 minutes east. It suits value golf, not resort golf.

Should I stay on 30A for a golf trip?

Only if the private St. Joe courses are the point, in which case stay at Camp Creek Inn or Watersound Inn, the inns whose guests can book them. From WaterColor Inn, Sandestin's Baytowne is 26 minutes and Kelly Plantation 40, so a 30A beach stay makes Destin golf a drive.

Is Niceville worth considering?

For a value trip, yes. The Hampton Inn in Bluewater Bay is 9 minutes from Bluewater Bay and Rocky Bayou, and about 18 to 20 minutes from Regatta Bay and Kelly Plantation over the Mid-Bay Bridge. The bridge has a toll, and there is no beach.

How far is the airport from each area?

Destin-Fort Walton Beach Airport (VPS) is about 33 minutes from Destin Harbor and 43 from Sandestin, free-flow. Northwest Florida Beaches (ECP) is closer to the east end of 30A, about 65 minutes from Sandestin and 82 from Destin.

How much does traffic change these drive times?

The minutes in this guide are free-flow router estimates without traffic. On spring-break and summer Saturdays, add 20 to 60 minutes or more on US 98 and the US 331 bridge, so pick a base close to your tee times in those weeks.
