Guide emblem: How to Plan a St. George, Utah Golf Trip, Step by Step

A St. George golf trip works best in March to April or late October to November, flying into Las Vegas and driving two hours up I-15 through Mesquite, NV. Base yourself in St. George, Washington, Ivins or Hurricane near the courses you'll play most, mix one or two resort rounds with cheaper city courses, and book each tee time the day its window opens.

Below is the order we'd plan it in, with the facts that change the decisions.

Step 1: Pick your St. George golf trip dates

St. George's NOAA normals put March highs near 68°F and April near 75°F, with October at about 79°F and November about 64°F. Those are the prime months. They're also the busiest: spring break, Easter and Zion traffic fill March and April, and early October stacks the PGA TOUR event, the St. George Marathon and the Huntsman World Senior Games into two weeks.

Two windows to avoid for a first trip: September, when most courses close in turn to overseed, and July, when highs average about 102°F. Our best time to golf in St. George guide goes month by month.

Step 2: Fly into Las Vegas (usually)

Las Vegas has more flights, cheaper fares and cheaper rental cars. St. George's airport is about 15 minutes from town but has fewer routes and fewer cars.

Here's a real comparison we priced for a Calgary trip over Nov 27 to Dec 1, 2026, checked Oct 9 on Google Flights and Kayak:

Option Detail Price
Fly to Las Vegas (LAS)Nonstop WestJet, round tripCA$465
Fly to St. George (SGU)1 to 2 connections, round tripCA$1,037+
Rental SUV at LAS4 days, free cancellationUS$137–147

Flying into Las Vegas saved about CA$570 per person. Fares change constantly, so price both airports for your dates. If the gap is small, St. George saves you about four hours of driving round trip.

Car tips that matter for golfers:

  • Book a small SUV or full-size car. Two golf travel bags plus suitcases rarely fit a compact trunk.
  • Rent round trip from Las Vegas. Dropping a Vegas car in St. George often adds a one-way fee.
  • You lose an hour driving north into Utah and get it back on the way south, which helps for an evening flight after a morning round.

The drive itself is about 2 hours: Mesquite at roughly 1 hour 10 minutes, then the Virgin River Gorge through a corner of Arizona, then St. George.

How golf around St. George, Utah is laid out

Before you pick a hotel, it helps to see the map. The St. George golf courses fall into five clusters around Washington County, plus a Nevada group 50 minutes south. Drive times are from downtown St. George on our map's routing.

Area Courses Drive from downtown St. George
Central St. GeorgeDixie Red Hills, Southgate, St. George Golf Club, Sunbrook7–12 min
South St. GeorgeSunRiver14 min
Ivins and the Snow Canyon sideBlack Desert, Entrada (private), The Ledges12–15 min
WashingtonGreen Spring, Coral Canyon12–17 min
Hurricane, toward ZionSky Mountain, Sand Hollow, Copper Rock28–36 min
Mesquite, NV and the Arizona lineBeaver Dam Lodge, the Oasis courses, CasaBlanca, Wolf Creek, Falcon Ridge, Coyote Willows, Conestoga, Palms39–57 min

The useful takeaway: everything except Hurricane and Mesquite sits within about 17 minutes of downtown. Hurricane is the outlier, roughly half an hour east on the way to Zion National Park, and it holds two of the area's biggest names in Sand Hollow and Copper Rock. If two or more of your rounds are out there, consider staying out there for part of the trip.

Mesquite works best as a stop on the drive from Las Vegas or as its own day. Beaver Dam Lodge, a nine-hole all-par-3 course just over the Arizona line, is the closest of that group at 39 minutes.

Step 3: Choose a base for your St. George golf trip

The courses sit anywhere from 7 minutes to nearly an hour from downtown St. George. Where you sleep decides how much of each morning you spend driving.

A few things worth knowing:

  • SpringHill Suites is built on Green Spring with direct course access.
  • Sand Hollow Resort's STAY&PLAY code gives 10% off rooms and 20% off tee times, and guests can book tee times a year out.
  • Black Desert resort guests pay $75 to $125 less per round than non-guests (2026 rate card), though rooms typically run about $400 to $450+ a night before a 15% resort fee. The course is 2 minutes from the hotel.
  • The Ledges rentals are 3 to 7-bedroom homes, which suit groups of 6 to 8.
  • Staybridge Suites has full kitchens, useful if your group wants to cook.
  • In Hurricane, the Comfort Inn & Suites is 5 minutes from Sky Mountain and the Wingate 8 minutes.

Step 4: Build your course mix

Most groups mix price levels. For a first St. George golf trip, here's the four-round mix we'd recommend:

  1. One bucket-list round: Black Desert in Ivins or Sand Hollow Championship in Hurricane. Sand Hollow's back nine (holes 11–15) runs along a cliff edge; Black Desert is a PGA TOUR venue ranked No. 2 in Utah by Golf Digest.
  2. One strong mid-priced test: Coral Canyon in Washington (about $135 peak) or The Ledges after 2 p.m.
  3. One city course: Sunbrook, the city's 27-hole flagship, at $88 with cart in peak season.
  4. An arrival or departure round: Southgate, the shortest city 18 and right off I-15, or a Mesquite course on the drive from Las Vegas.

Ranked picks are in the best golf courses in St. George.

Step 5: Book tee times in the right order

Booking windows vary by more than five months, so book the longest-window course first.

Spring weekend mornings at Sand Hollow go months ahead: when we checked on Oct 11, 2026, Saturday Mar 20, 2027 had only afternoon times left. Our tee times booking guide covers single-player rules and a booking countdown.

Step 6: Know the house rules before you go

  • Time zone. Mesquite is on Pacific time, one hour behind St. George. Tee times there are local.
  • Dress codes. Sand Hollow strictly enforces collars and bans denim of any kind. Oasis bans denim on the range too. Wolf Creek bans jeans, T-shirts and tank tops. Pack collared shirts and skip the jeans.
  • Carts. Coral Canyon includes a half cart but allows no extra riders and requires every player to carry their own bag. Green Spring allows a maximum of two carts per group. The city courses charge $20 extra for a cart over 18 holes.
  • Pace. Wolf Creek's own policy says rounds will likely exceed five hours, and a 2024 reviewer reported about five hours at Coral Canyon. Don't stack a 36-hole day around those two.

What a St. George golf trip costs

Prices seen in October 2026 for peak season, per person, 18 holes with cart:

  • City courses: $64 (Southgate, St. George GC) to $88 (Sunbrook)
  • Mid-range: Green Spring $80–$90, Coral Canyon about $135, SunRiver $105–$115
  • Resort: Sand Hollow up to $366 on spring mornings, Black Desert $450 for non-guests, The Ledges $255–$295 mornings

Hotels near the city courses averaged about $200 to $260 a night in their most expensive month on Kayak, and about $75 to $120 in their cheapest month. All of it changes, so treat these as a starting budget.

Adding a stop beyond St. George

A longer Southern Utah golf trip can take in a round outside Washington County. Three options come up most, and each suits a different season.

  • Cedar City, north on I-15. Cedar Ridge is about 58 minutes from downtown St. George and sits at about 5,810 feet, so it runs much cooler than St. George. That makes it a summer round, not a winter one: snow closures are likely from December to February. It was a flat $32 walking or $50 with cart on its 2025 rate card.
  • Beaver Dam and Littlefield, Arizona, south on I-15. Beaver Dam Lodge's nine par 3s and the 18-hole Palms Golf Club both sit just over the state line on the way to Mesquite, 39 and 57 minutes from downtown on our routing.
  • Zion's east side. Thunderbird at Mount Carmel Junction is a short nine, but the direct route runs through Zion National Park and we found no 2025 or 2026 confirmation it's operating.

Our Cedar City and Southern Utah golf post covers all four.
