Average high by month: What a Rio Grande Valley golf trip costs, at three budgets

A Rio Grande Valley golf trip cost comes to about $250 per person for four rounds and four nights on a budget plan, about $390 mid-range, and about $550 for a resort-and-coast plan. Those figures cover green fees and a shared room only, from rates seen in October 2026. Flights, a rental car and food come on top.

Many of the Valley's public courses are city-run. City courses in Mission, Pharr, McAllen and Harlingen charge $21 to $47 for 18, and only the coast course near South Padre Island goes much higher. This guide prices three sample trips line by line so you can adjust them to your own dates.

Quick facts

  • Cheapest 18: Champion Lakes afternoon couples rate, $30 for two with a cart; Shary $21 walking.

  • Not included: flights, car, food, tips.

How we priced the Rio Grande Valley golf trip cost

Each plan is four nights and four rounds for two golfers sharing one room, so room costs are split in half. Green fees are the published rate cards or listings seen on October 26, 2026, and hotel rates are Kayak samples for single nights in late October and early November 2026 that include estimated taxes. Several course rates come from undated listings and are labelled. Rates change, and peak-season nights in January to March may cost more than our samples.

This plan walks where it can and uses the late couples rate at Champion Lakes, which starts at 4 PM in standard time and 5:30 PM in daylight saving time. Shary's cart is $25 for 18, or $12.50 each when shared, if you would rather ride. The La Quinta is the cheapest hotel in our sample, but its reviews are only fair (7.8 on Kayak). El Angel is about an hour from the hotel; if you would rather keep drives short, swap in Los Lagos, though no current rate card was found there (a reviewer cites $26 twilight with a cart, undated).

The Rancho Viejo villa rate is from an undated third-party listing, so call the resort; its $10 nightly fee covers breakfast, pool, fitness and parking, per Kayak. Margaritaville uses valet parking, and any resort fee is not confirmed (a group listing shows a $5 mandatory fee). Breakfast is not included there. Mid-range$163$224about $387

Ways to cut the Rio Grande Valley golf trip cost

The cheapest trips use the city courses' own discounts rather than third-party deals.

  1. Play twilight. Champion Lakes is $37 with a cart from 2 PM in standard time, against $47 earlier. Tierra Del Sol drops from $41 to $28 with a cart from 2 PM. South Padre Island Golf Club is $50 midweek from 2 PM and $55 Friday to Sunday from 1 PM.
  2. Play midweek on the coast. South Padre Island Golf Club is $69 Monday to Thursday and $79 Friday to Sunday before 2 PM.
  3. Use a replay. Tierra Del Sol's replay with a cart is $20, so 27 holes there costs $61 with a cart.
  4. Check GolfNow carefully. South Padre's Hot Deals ran about $42 to $72 for October 18 to 22, 2026, but they are prepaid and refundable only with 24 or more hours' notice.
  5. Share a suite. Embassy Suites' two-room suites and the Rancho Viejo villas both split well between two or four golfers, and both include breakfast.
  6. Walk the flat courses. Shary and Tierra Del Sol are flat municipal layouts, and walking saves $12.50 to $15 a round compared with a cart.
  7. Avoid peak weeks. Thanksgiving week, the Christmas and New Year weeks and mid-March spring break on South Padre are the busiest. January to mid-March is peak Winter Texan season, when morning tee times are hardest to get.

The Rio Grande Valley golf trip itinerary shows how these courses fit into four days, and the same rules keep any Rio Grande Valley golf trip cost down.

What is not in these numbers

  • Flights. Fares are not in our data. McAllen (MFE) is about 5 minutes from downtown; Harlingen (HRL) has Southwest; San Antonio is about 276 minutes' drive by routed estimate. See flights to McAllen.
  • Car. You need one; courses run from Mission to Laguna Vista.
  • Food. Course grills at Tierra Del Sol and Los Lagos keep lunch simple.
  • Tax. Only South Padre Island Golf Club states its 7.75% sales tax; Champion Lakes says its cart fee includes tax.

Costs for a longer winter stay

A Winter Texan season changes the math, because passes and monthly rates replace daily fees.
