The pattern across the Rio Grande Valley golf courses is simple. The cheapest, busiest golf is in the city courses around McAllen, Mission and Pharr. The longer, more interesting layouts are Los Lagos, Tierra Santa and the Rancho Viejo pair. The coast has one course, and it costs the most.

West Valley: McAllen, Mission, Pharr and Edinburg

Champion Lakes is McAllen's city course, the old Palm View, rebuilt in 1999. It posts the clearest rate card in the Valley ($33 to walk, $14 a person for a cart) and is home to about thirty Winter Texan leagues, so winter mornings are busy. The Champion Lakes course guide has the layout.

Shary Municipal in Mission has 27 flat holes and is lit for night golf, with the last tee time at 11 PM. That is the escape valve when every morning slot in the Valley is taken.

Tierra del Sol is Pharr's city course, with online booking and the best-published seasonal packages we found: $800 for three months of a round a day with a cart, for one person.

Edinburg has two city courses. Los Lagos is a Robert von Hagge water course from 2001 and the toughest public test on the west side, though recent reviews on upkeep are poor; Troon was picked in September 2026 to take over operations. Ebony Hills is a 1927 John Bredemus nine, with a new clubhouse under construction until about summer 2027. North of town, Monte Cristo is a lakes course inside a 55+ community; players rate it well, but call ahead to confirm visitor access. The Los Lagos course guide covers its water holes.

Mid-Valley: Weslaco and Mercedes

Tierra Santa in Weslaco is a 1997 Jeff Brauer and Steve Elkington design, 7,139 yards from the Black tees, and the best-reviewed public course in the middle of the Valley. GolfNow times started at $24 when we looked. See the Tierra Santa course guide.

Llano Grande in Mercedes runs through a big RV and mobile-home resort, and it is open to the public. It is cheap, but recent reviews complain about bare fairways and uneven greens.

Harlingen

Tony Butler is Harlingen's 27-hole city course and handles about 40,000 rounds a year, much of it from Winter Texans. Treasure Hills is the town's other public 18, longer at 6,960 yards and listed on GolfNow and TeeOff, though the club has been on the sale market. Our Harlingen golf courses guide compares them.

Brownsville and Rancho Viejo

Rancho Viejo, just north of Brownsville, has two 1971 Dennis Arp courses. El Diablo is narrow with water on about half the holes. El Angel is the shorter, friendlier par 70. Resort guests and Winter Texan members can play, and listings also sell public times, but confirm outside access by phone.

In Brownsville, Brownsville Golf Center is the city 18, being refreshed in phases during 2026 while it stays open. It posts no rates. River Bend sits along the Rio Grande west of town and has its own RV lots. More detail is in our Brownsville golf courses guide.

The coast: Laguna Vista

South Padre Island Golf Club is on the mainland at Laguna Vista, facing the Laguna Madre. It is the only course near the island. Rack rates were $69 Monday to Thursday and $79 Friday to Sunday before 2 PM with a cart, plus 7.75% sales tax. Twilight from $50 is the better value, and morning rounds miss the worst of the afternoon breeze. The South Padre Island golf guide covers the wind and where to stay.

Private clubs

McAllen Country Club, opened in 1946 in south McAllen, and Harlingen Country Club in Palm Valley are private. You need a member or a reciprocal arrangement through your home club, and neither sells public tee times.

Closed and unconfirmed courses

Some names on older lists are gone. Cimarron in Mission closed in August 2022; new owners plan to reopen it as a private club, with restoration that could take up to three years. Fort Brown Memorial in Brownsville closed around 2015. Rio Grande City has no course.

Others have a status we could not confirm: Valley International Country Club in Brownsville (a 2017 clubhouse fire), Howling Trails in Mission (the old Martin Valley Ranch), Mid Valley in Mercedes, Seven Oaks in Mission, Raymondville's nine-hole city course, and three small Harlingen courses (Cottonwood XXI, Stuart Place and Sunshine Country Club Estates). For all of these: status unclear, call first. Our guide to closed golf courses in the Rio Grande Valley has the detail.

Which course for which golfer

Every one of the Rio Grande Valley golf courses above suits someone. A short version:

  • Cheapest regular round: Shary, Tierra del Sol or Llano Grande.
  • Best test: Los Lagos or Tierra Santa from the back tees, or El Diablo.
  • Seniors and mixed groups: El Angel, Ebony Hills or the middle tees at Champion Lakes.
  • Season-long value: Tierra del Sol's three-month package or Champion Lakes' 20-round Smart Card ($561).
  • One coastal round: South Padre Island Golf Club at twilight.

When to play

Winter Texan season, roughly November to March, is when Rio Grande Valley golf courses are at their best and busiest. NOAA normals at McAllen put January at about 73F highs and 53F lows, with cold fronts that can bring a day or two of 50s, wind and drizzle. November averages about 80F and is one of the best months. From June to August highs run 97-100F and it is humid, so golf becomes dawn-only, and hurricane season runs June 1 to November 30.

Questions golfers ask

How many golf courses are in the Rio Grande Valley?

Our map has 17 operating courses between Mission and Laguna Vista. Two of them, McAllen Country Club and Harlingen Country Club, are private, which leaves 15 that sell rounds to visitors. Several other listed courses are closed or have an unclear status.

What is the cheapest golf course in the Rio Grande Valley?

Shary Municipal in Mission charged $21 to walk 18 holes on an undated city rate sheet seen in October 2026. Llano Grande in Mercedes showed GolfNow times from $18.99. Rates change, so confirm before you go.

What is the hardest public course in the Valley?

Los Lagos in Edinburg is the longest public layout at 7,188 yards from the Black tees, with a 74.2 rating and 132 slope and water on 11-12 holes. Rancho Viejo's El Diablo carries a 129 slope from 6,847 yards.

Is there golf on South Padre Island?

There is no course on the island itself. The nearest is South Padre Island Golf Club in Laguna Vista on the mainland, about 20 minutes from the island's beach hotels across the Queen Isabella Causeway.

Can I play McAllen Country Club or Harlingen Country Club?

Not as a regular visitor. Both are private member clubs. Listings say play at Harlingen Country Club is with a member, and neither sells public tee times.

Are Valley courses green in winter?

Valley courses are bermudagrass, and with January lows around 53F the grass usually stays partly green. After a hard freeze or a run of cold fronts, fairways can turn tan and semi-dormant for weeks. Course-by-course overseeding was not confirmed for 2026.

When is the busiest golf season in the Valley?

Winter Texan season runs roughly November to March, and January to mid-March is the busiest. Morning tee times and league slots fill first, so book ahead or play in the afternoon.
