South Padre Island golf means one course: South Padre Island Golf Club, on the mainland at Laguna Vista, about 20 minutes from the beach hotels across the causeway. In October 2026 it charged $69-$79 with a cart before 2 PM, and twilight from $50. Play mornings, before the breeze builds. Rancho Viejo is next-nearest, about 40 minutes away.

South Padre Island Golf Club
The club sits on the bay side of the mainland at 1 Golf House Rd, Laguna Vista, facing the Laguna Madre. It is a membership club that sells public tee times on its own site and on GolfNow. From the back tees it is 6,931 yards, par 72. Tee ratings and slopes were not published in our sources.

All rates are plus 7.75% sales tax. The club says it has variable and seasonal rates, and the published card carries no dates, so winter prices may differ. Hot Deals are prepaid and refundable only with 24 hours' notice, and the club charges the full reservation for a no-show. Pets are not allowed on the course apart from service animals. The booking window was not published.

How the wind plays
Wind is the defining feature of South Padre Island golf. The course is exposed to the coast, and the afternoon sea breeze off the Laguna Madre usually builds through the day. NOAA 1991-2020 normals at Brownsville airport, the nearest station, give a feel for the season:

The island itself has no normals in our data, and the coast is likely breezier than the Brownsville station. In practice:
- Book mornings from February to May, when the average wind is 11-12 mph.
- November and January are the calmer winter months at about 9-10 mph.
- Take the twilight rate only when the forecast is calm, or accept a windy, cheaper round.

Margaritaville is the former Pearl South Padre, converted in June 2023, on the beach at the south end of the island. It has 200 rooms plus 50 beachfront condos of one to three bedrooms for groups. Breakfast is not included, and parking is valet.
Isla Grand is dated but cheap, with free parking and 65 two-bedroom condos that sleep up to six, which suits a foursome. Kayak says January is typically its cheapest month. Reviews mention dated rooms and uneven upkeep.
Monthly condos suit couples wintering on the beach and driving to golf a couple of times a week. The two-bedroom beachfront example was $3,250 a month for November to February (excluding the December 21-31 holiday block at $3,500) and $4,000 for March. Other island two-bedrooms showed $2,400-$2,600 a month for winter 2026. Ask about cleaning fees and hotel occupancy tax. See Rio Grande Valley monthly rentals.

Rancho Viejo is the best pairing: El Diablo is the tougher of the two (129 slope from the Gold tees), and El Angel is the easier par 70. Three days of golf from the island
A simple pattern for a long weekend on the beach:
- Day one: arrive, then South Padre Island Golf Club at twilight if the wind is down.
- Day two: drive to Rancho Viejo in the morning for El Angel or El Diablo, and back for an evening on the bay side.
- Day three: a morning round at Laguna Vista before the breeze, then the lighthouse or Sea Turtle, Inc.
That is under three hours of driving in total on our estimates. Put the Laguna Vista rounds on Monday to Thursday if you can, to pay $69 rather than $79 (or $50 rather than $55 at twilight).
Spring break and other timing
South Padre spring break is in March, and the busiest "Texas Week" is usually mid-March, when the big Texas universities break. The island, Port Isabel and the causeway get very busy, and lodging rates jump; wristbands ($25 plus tax per person) are required in the condo we looked at during spring break and Holy Week. Off the course
- Sea Turtle, Inc.: rescue and rehabilitation center on Padre Blvd with daily public presentations.
- Port Isabel Lighthouse: from 1852, the only lighthouse on the Texas coast open for climbing.
- Laguna Atascosa National Wildlife Refuge: a large coastal refuge, home of the last wild ocelots in the US.
- Food: Pier 19 on the bay side for sunset seafood, Captain's Cove Oyster Bar near the beach, and Padre Island Brewing Company. Current hours were not verified.

Brownsville/South Padre Island International (BRO) is the closest airport. From downtown McAllen the island is about 92 minutes by road on our estimate, and South Padre Island Golf Club about 78 minutes.

NOAA normals at Brownsville airport average about 12 mph from March to May, the windiest stretch, and about 10 mph in January. The island and the Laguna Vista course are more exposed than that inland station. The afternoon sea breeze usually builds, so morning rounds play easier.

Rancho Viejo's two 18s and Brownsville Golf Center are about 39-40 minutes from the island hotels on our estimate. River Bend in Brownsville is about 48 minutes and Tony Butler in Harlingen about 55.
