Tee-time ticket: Rio Grande Valley golf in March: the last big month of the season

Rio Grande Valley golf in March means low-80s afternoons, low-60s mornings and very little rain, but more wind than any other month of the winter season. It is the last full month of Winter Texan season. Book Valley mornings early, keep coastal rounds away from mid-March spring break, and expect tee sheets to loosen after Easter.

March sits between the busiest weeks of the winter and the quiet spring shoulder. The weather is the warmest of the Winter Texan season, the courses are still full of league groups for the first half of the month, and the coast has its one truly crowded stretch of the year. This guide to Rio Grande Valley golf in March covers the normals, the calendar, the rates seen in October 2026 and how to plan a March round or a full March stay.

Quick facts

  • Normals (McAllen, NOAA 1991-2020): 83.2F high, 62.7F low, 1.38 in of rain, about 4.4 rain days.
  • Wind: about 11.5 mph average; afternoons are often gusty.
  • Crowds: busy until mid-month, then Winter Texans start heading north.
  • Spring break: South Padre fills in mid-March ("Texas Week").
  • Clock change: daylight saving time starts March 14, 2027, which moves twilight start times an hour later.
  • Easter: Sunday, March 28, 2027.

Rio Grande Valley weather in March for golf

March is the month the Valley stops feeling like winter. The NOAA normals from McAllen's airport station show a jump of almost 6F in the daily high from February, while January remains the month of Valley cold fronts. Rain is still light.

Month High (F) Low (F) Rain (in) Rain days Wind (mph)

March, McAllen83.262.71.384.411.5

Two things follow from the table. First, the wind is the main weather factor in March, not the heat or rain. An average near 11-12 mph means plenty of afternoons where a club or two of extra wind is normal. Second, the coast and the west Valley are close in March. Brownsville runs a little cooler in the afternoon and gets about one more rain day, but neither side has a weather edge worth driving for.

Mornings vs afternoons

With lows in the low 60s, a first tee time is comfortable without layers on most days, and the wind is usually lighter early. If you play the coast, take the morning. At South Padre Island Golf Club the afternoon sea breeze off the Laguna Madre usually builds. Inland at Champion Lakes or Tierra del Sol, an afternoon round is warmer but still pleasant, and twilight rates make it cheaper.

What is happening in March

The Valley calendar is busy in March, but only spring break has a real effect on golf trips.

  • RGV Livestock Show and Rodeo (Mercedes): early to mid March, about 11-12 days (March 7-17 in 2024). The 2027 dates were not found as of October 2026. Expect local traffic near the Mercedes showgrounds off I-2 and little effect on tee sheets.
  • South Padre Island spring break: the busiest week is usually mid-March, when the big Texas universities break. The island, Port Isabel and the Queen Isabella Causeway get very busy and island lodging rates jump.
  • Jackson Street Market Days (Harlingen): the first Saturday of the month, 9 AM-3 PM, which falls on March 6, 2027.
  • Charro Days (Brownsville): usually late February. The 2025 edition ran February 27 to March 1, so a few years spill into early March. Third-party calendars list February 25-27, 2027, but the organizer had not confirmed.
  • Easter and departures: Easter Sunday is March 28, 2027. Winter Texans begin heading north from mid-March, and more leave after Easter.

Tee times and rates for Rio Grande Valley golf in March

March is still Winter Texan season, so the first half of the month books like February: morning tee times at the city courses go first. Champion Lakes, the McAllen city course, is home to about thirty Winter Texan leagues, and those groups do not leave on the first of the month. By the last week of March the pressure eases. Our guide to Rio Grande Valley tee times covers how each course takes bookings.

The daylight saving switch

The clocks go forward on March 14, 2027. At Champion Lakes and Tierra del Sol the twilight rate starts at 2 PM during standard time and 3 PM during daylight saving time, so from mid-March you start an hour later but still have the same light to finish. Champion Lakes' afternoon couples rate ($30 for two with a cart) and family rate ($25) move from 4 PM to 5:30 PM under daylight saving time. The Champion Lakes course guide has the full rate sheet.

Packages that start in April

If you are staying past March, note one detail at Tierra del Sol. Its one-month single package with cart ($350) is sold April through December only, not January to March. The three-month package ($800 single, $1,200 couple, one round a day with cart) is the option during the season. The Tierra del Sol course guide and our Rio Grande Valley golf passes guide compare these with punch cards elsewhere.

Spring break and coastal golf

South Padre Island Golf Club in Laguna Vista is the only course near the island, and it is the round most visitors want to add to a beach stay. In March, plan it around spring break rather than into it. The causeway and the island are busiest in the Texas university week in mid-March, and island lodging rates jump.

The numbers on monthly island rentals show the effect. A two-bedroom beachfront condo we tracked, Inverness #1005 through SPI Rentals, listed $3,250 a month for January and February 2027 and $4,000 for March 2027. Wristbands at $25 plus tax per person are required during spring break and Holy Week. Even the beach hotels that look cheap in the off-season, such as Isla Grand Beach Resort, are worth pricing for your exact March dates before you commit.

The practical approach for a golf trip: stay in McAllen, Mission or Harlingen in mid-March and drive to Laguna Vista for a morning round on a weekday. From downtown McAllen the course is about 78 minutes on our routed estimate. Our South Padre Island golf guide covers the island side in more detail.

Where to base yourself in March

For a short trip, the west Valley is the simpler choice in March because it sidesteps the coastal crowds. La Quinta Inn & Suites McAllen Convention Center is about 4 minutes from Champion Lakes, and the Hampton Inn & Suites Mission is about 8 minutes from Shary and 7 from Champion Lakes. Both have free breakfast.

For a Winter Texan finishing the season, March is when a monthly site can make sense if you arrive late. Tropic Star RV Resort in Pharr listed RV sites at $770 a month for one to two months, plus electric, and it is about 7 minutes from Tierra del Sol. Read the refund terms first: the rvresorts.com parks give a full refund only within 24 hours of booking. See where to stay in the Rio Grande Valley in winter for a full comparison.

A simple March week

This is one way to set up Rio Grande Valley golf in March over five days, keeping the coast for a weekday morning.

  1. Monday: Champion Lakes, morning tee time booked through the city's online system.
  2. Tuesday: Tierra del Sol with a cart, then the Friday Night 9-Hole Sundowner later in the week if you want an extra nine.
  3. Wednesday: South Padre Island Golf Club, early, on a weekday outside spring break week.
  4. Thursday: Tierra Santa in Weslaco, the best-reviewed public course in the mid-Valley on GolfPass.
  5. Friday: Shary under the lights in the evening if the morning sheets are full.

Swap days around the wind. A calm morning is the one to spend on the coast or on the longer courses.

How March compares

Rio Grande Valley golf in March runs about 10F warmer and windier than Rio Grande Valley golf in January, and more Winter Texans leave each week. When is spring break on South Padre Island?

Spring break fills South Padre, Port Isabel and the Queen Isabella Causeway in March, with the busiest 'Texas Week' usually in mid-March when the large Texas universities break. The 2027 university dates were not confirmed in our research. Island lodging rates jump that week.

When do Winter Texans leave the Valley?

Departures pick up from mid-March and after Easter, which is Sunday, March 28, 2027. Tee times and RV sites open up in April. Late March is usually easier to book than February.

Do twilight times change in March?
