Average high by month: Where to stay in the Rio Grande Valley in winter: picking a golf base

Where to stay in the Rio Grande Valley in winter comes down to which courses you want to play most. The McAllen, Mission and Pharr side has the most golf within 15 minutes and the driest weather. The mid-Valley reaches both ends. Harlingen and Brownsville suit the east-side courses, and South Padre is a beach base with one course nearby.

Downtown McAllen to downtown Brownsville is about 60 miles along I-2 and I-69E, and nobody plays all of it from one front door. This guide splits it into five winter bases, with the stays on our map, the rates we saw in October 2026 and drive times to the courses. Rates change every season, so treat every number as a guide and confirm it before you pay a deposit.

Quick facts

  • Most golf nearby: McAllen, Mission and Pharr. Champion Lakes, Shary and Tierra del Sol are all within 14 minutes of downtown McAllen.
  • Cheapest published season rate: Bentsen Grove in Mission, $1,400 for three months on a standard RV site plus electric (card effective November 1, 2025).
  • Live on a course: Llano Grande Resort (Mercedes) and River Bend Resort (Brownsville) both have their own 18.
  • Driest base: the west and central Valley. Brownsville gets about 26.8 inches of rain a year against 22.2 at McAllen.
  • Beach base: South Padre Island, about $3,250 a month for a beachfront two-bedroom in January and February 2027.
  • Season: roughly November to March, busiest January to mid-March.

Hotel prices come from Kayak sample nights in early November 2026 and include estimated taxes and fees. They are typical, not quotes, and Winter Texan months were not checked for most hotels.

McAllen, Mission and Pharr: the most golf per mile

The west Valley is the default winter base. From downtown McAllen, Champion Lakes is 7 minutes, Shary 13, Tierra del Sol 14, Ebony Hills 15, Los Lagos 17 and Monte Cristo 26 on our routed estimates. That is six courses you can rotate without a long drive, and McAllen International Airport (MFE) is about 5 minutes from downtown.

For a long stay, Bentsen Grove Resort on the west edge of Mission publishes the clearest cheap season packages: $1,400 for three months, $1,800 for four, $2,000 for five and $2,400 for six on a standard site, all plus metered electric. There is no golf on site, but Shary is about 8 minutes away. Tropic Star RV Resort in Pharr costs more ($2,220 for three months) but has a 9-hole par-3 in the park and Tierra del Sol 7 minutes away. It also rents one-bedroom park models at $1,500 a month in season, electric extra. Its seasonal plans reference a 2025 booking window, so ask for the 2026-27 card.

If you want a hotel, La Quinta Inn & Suites McAllen Convention Center is about 1.5 miles up Ware Road from Champion Lakes, with a fridge and microwave in the room. Our where to stay in McAllen for golf guide covers the hotels in more detail.

The west side also has the better winter weather. NOAA normals put McAllen at 0.77 inches of rain in January with 6.1 rain days.

The mid-Valley: Alamo, Donna, Weslaco and Mercedes

The middle of the Valley trades the shortest drives for reach. From Llano Grande Resort in Mercedes, Tierra Santa is 18 minutes, Tony Butler 26 and Champion Lakes 32, so you can play either end in a morning.

Llano Grande is the Valley's biggest RV resort with its own course. The Llano Grande 18 is inside the park, along with three pools, 12 pickleball courts and leagues and group play. Monthly RV sites run $795 to $1,395 plus metered electric, and a park model, cottage or apartment is $2,889 a month. The $700 deposit is non-refundable inside 60 days of arrival. Reviews of the course since late 2025 complain about bare fairways, so plan to play elsewhere too.

In Alamo, Trophy Gardens RV Resort has a par-3 on site and three months for $2,025 plus electric, and Alamo Rose RV Resort is $1,980 for three months with no golf on site. Both cards are labelled for 2025-26, so ask for the new one. Victoria Palms RV Resort in Donna is one of the biggest 55+ resorts, about 13 minutes from Tierra Santa, but its rates are by phone only.

Harlingen and San Benito

Harlingen suits golfers who want the two Harlingen public courses and quick access to Rancho Viejo. Hampton Inn & Suites Harlingen is about 8 minutes from both Tony Butler and Treasure Hills, with a fridge and microwave in every room.

Valley International Airport (HRL) is in Harlingen, and it is the airport with winter nonstops from the upper Midwest: seasonal Minneapolis/St. Paul on Delta and Sun Country, and Chicago O'Hare on American Eagle from December 19, 2026.

For a long stay on this side, Fun-N-Sun RV Resort in San Benito is 11 minutes from Tony Butler, but it has only mini golf, its rates are by phone and recent reviews are mixed.

Brownsville and Rancho Viejo

The Brownsville end has the best stay-on-the-course options. River Bend Resort is a gated 55+ park on its own course by the Rio Grande, and the River Bend seasonal golf membership is clearly priced at $200 a month for an individual or $300 for a family, plus trail or cart fees. Few RV sites are for rent and site rates are by phone.

Rancho Viejo Resort rents 22 villas on Rancho Viejo El Diablo, with Rancho Viejo El Angel next door. An undated listing shows $114 to $199 a night (check rates), and in January 2026 the club made its range and tech bay members-only, so confirm guest tee times by phone. For a hotel, Courtyard Brownsville is 6 minutes from Brownsville Golf Center and 11 from Rancho Viejo.

The catch is weather and distance. Brownsville averages 7.0 rain days in January and 26.8 inches of rain a year, and the west Valley courses are over an hour away.

South Padre Island

The island is a beach winter with golf on the side. A beachfront two-bedroom at Inverness through SPI Rentals listed at $3,250 a month for November through February (with a $3,500 holiday block December 21-31) and $4,000 for March 2027, which is spring-break pricing. Other island two-bedrooms showed $2,400 to $2,600 a month for winter 2026.

For shorter stays, Isla Grand Beach Resort started at $82 on a November sample night, and Kayak says January is typically its cheapest month. Margaritaville Beach Resort, the former Pearl South Padre, started at $94 on an October weekday.

The nearest course is South Padre Island Golf Club in Laguna Vista, about 19 to 25 minutes across the causeway. Rancho Viejo is about 40 minutes and McAllen courses about an hour and a half. See our South Padre Island golf guide.

How to choose where to stay in the Rio Grande Valley in winter

  • You want to play four or five times a week: stay west, in Mission, McAllen or Pharr.
  • You want to live on a course: Llano Grande Resort or River Bend Resort. Our RV resorts with golf guide compares them.
  • You want a furnished place, not an RV: park models at Tropic Star or Llano Grande, or a condo on the island. See Rio Grande Valley monthly rentals.
  • You fly in from Minneapolis or Chicago: Harlingen is closest to HRL. Our flights to McAllen guide compares the three airports.
  • You care most about dry mornings: the west and central Valley. Our McAllen weather by month guide has the full normals.

Read the deposit rules before you sign. Bentsen Grove refunds only with written notice before December 1, and the rvresorts.com parks (Tropic Star, Trophy Gardens, Alamo Rose) refund only within 24 hours of booking. Electric is extra on monthly stays almost everywhere.

Once you have a base, our winter Texan golf guide and the snowbird golf schedule show how to build the weeks around it. The Champion Lakes course guide, Llano Grande course guide and River Bend course guide cover the courses closest to the three most popular bases.

Questions golfers ask

Where should I stay in the Rio Grande Valley in winter for golf?

For the most courses within a short drive, stay in the McAllen, Mission and Pharr area, where six public or semi-private courses sit within about 26 minutes of downtown McAllen. The mid-Valley (Alamo, Weslaco, Mercedes) is the compromise if you want to reach both ends of the Valley.

Is McAllen or Harlingen better as a winter base?

McAllen has more courses close by and the drier winter. Harlingen puts you about eight minutes from both Tony Butler and Treasure Hills, about 16 minutes from Rancho Viejo and next to Valley International Airport, which has seasonal nonstops from Minneapolis and Chicago.

How much does a winter RV site cost in the Rio Grande Valley?

Published cards seen in October 2026 ran from $1,400 for three months at Bentsen Grove in Mission to $2,220 for three months at Tropic Star in Pharr, plus metered electric. Llano Grande in Mercedes charges $795 to $1,395 a month plus electric. Rates change, so ask for the 2026-27 card.

Can I stay on a golf course for the winter in the Valley?

Yes. Llano Grande Resort in Mercedes has its own 18-hole course, and River Bend Resort west of Brownsville sits on its own 18. Rancho Viejo Resort rents villas on the El Diablo course, though rates are by phone.

Is South Padre Island a good winter base for golf?

Only if the beach comes first. The one nearby course is South Padre Island Golf Club in Laguna Vista, about 19 to 25 minutes away, and most other Valley courses are 40 minutes to over an hour and a half. A beachfront two-bedroom listed at $3,250 a month for January and February 2027.

Which part of the Valley has the best winter weather?

NOAA normals show McAllen and Brownsville almost identical in January (about 73F highs and 53F lows). The Brownsville side is wetter, with 7.0 rain days in January against 6.1 at McAllen, and gets more drizzle and fog when fronts pass.

When should I book a winter stay in the Valley?

Book well ahead. Monthly RV sites and rentals fill first in the November to March Winter Texan season. Check deposit rules: Bentsen Grove refunds only with written notice before December 1, and Tropic Star refunds only within 24 hours of booking.
