A good snowbird golf schedule in Texas runs four or five rounds a week in the Rio Grande Valley: three on a home course with a season pass, one away day elsewhere, and a twilight or night round when mornings are full. From McAllen, use Tierra del Sol as home; from Harlingen, Tony Butler and Rancho Viejo.
A weekly rotation keeps costs down, avoids the busiest league mornings and gives you variety over a long winter. This guide shows two sample weeks, one from each end of the Valley, with real prices from our October 2026 research and the rules that shape the schedule.
Quick facts
- Home course (west): Tierra del Sol, $800 for three months, round a day with cart.
- Twilight: Champion Lakes $37 with cart from 2 PM; Tierra del Sol $28 from 2 PM.
- Night golf: Shary, last tee time 11 PM.
- Away day: Tierra Santa, GolfNow from $24, about 30 minutes from McAllen.
- Coast round: South Padre Island Golf Club, cheaper Monday to Thursday.
- Busiest: January to mid-March mornings, and Champion Lakes league days.
Rules behind the snowbird golf schedule
- Put most rounds on the pass. A pass only pays if you use it. Tierra del Sol's package costs about $13 a round over 60 rounds, against $41 a day.
- Avoid the league crush. Champion Lakes is home to about thirty Winter Texan leagues. Play it in the afternoon on twilight or couples rates.
- One away day a week. Mid-Valley and east-Valley courses spread you off the busiest west-side sheets.
- Weekdays for premium courses. South Padre Island Golf Club charges $10 more Friday to Sunday.
- Keep a flex day. January fronts and spring wind decide some days for you.
- Use the lights. Shary and the lit ranges turn evenings into practice time.
Sample week from a McAllen or Pharr base
Drive times are routed estimates from downtown McAllen. Prices were seen October 26, 2026; rates change.
| Day | Course | Time | Why | Cost seen |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Mon | Tierra del Sol (Pharr), 14 min | Morning | Pass round; sources conflict on Monday hours, so confirm | Pass |
| Tue | Champion Lakes (McAllen), 7 min | 2 PM twilight | Leagues fill mornings; twilight with cart | $37 |
| Wed | Tierra Santa (Weslaco), 30 min | Morning | Away day, best-reviewed mid-Valley course | From $24 on GolfNow |
| Thu | Tierra del Sol | Morning | Pass round | Pass |
| Fri | Shary (Mission), 13 min | Evening | Range and a lit nine | $16 for 9 walking |
| Sat | Flex day | Front day, rest or birding | ||
| Sun | Tierra del Sol | Morning | Pass round | Pass |
That is four full rounds and a nine. Outside the pass, the week costs about $77 in green fees plus a bucket of balls. Swap the Wednesday away day each week: Los Lagos for a long test (7,188 yards, 132 slope; check recent reviews), Ebony Hills for an easy nine, or Llano Grande for a cheap round from $18.99.
If Friday suits better, Tierra del Sol's Friday Night 9-Hole Sundowner is an alternative to the Shary nine. The Tierra del Sol course guide has the full card.
Sample week from a Harlingen base
From the Hampton Inn & Suites Harlingen area, Tony Butler and Treasure Hills are about 8 minutes, the Rancho Viejo courses about 16, and South Padre Island Golf Club about 36.
| Day | Course | Time | Why | Cost seen |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Mon | Tony Butler (Harlingen) | Morning | City course, home base | $36 with cart (undated report) |
| Tue | Treasure Hills (Harlingen) | Morning | Longer test, 6,960 yds | About $40 (undated) |
| Wed | Rancho Viejo El Angel | Morning | Forgiving par 70; call to book | $40 (undated listing) |
| Thu | South Padre Island Golf Club | Morning | Weekday rate, before the sea breeze | $69 with cart |
| Fri | Tony Butler | Morning | Home course | $36 |
| Sat | Flex day | Jackson Street Market Days in Harlingen on the first Saturday | ||
| Sun | River Bend or Brownsville Golf Center | Morning | Variety; call for rates | $38 at River Bend (undated) |
Rates on the east side are less clearly published, so call ahead. Swap Wednesday for Rancho Viejo El Diablo, the harder of the pair at 6,847 yards and 129 slope, once you have played the course. For a cheaper coast round, take South Padre's Monday to Thursday twilight at $50 from 2 PM. The Tony Butler course guide and South Padre Island Golf Club course guide have the details.
A four-week snowbird golf schedule in Texas
Over a month, keep the home-course days fixed and rotate the away day and the evening slot. From a McAllen or Pharr base:
| Week | Away day | Afternoon or evening slot | Note |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | Tierra Santa (Weslaco) | Champion Lakes twilight | Learn the pass course and the league pattern |
| 2 | Los Lagos (Edinburg) | Shary night nine | Check recent Los Lagos reviews first |
| 3 | Llano Grande (Mercedes) | Champion Lakes couples rate | Cheapest week; ask about current conditions |
| 4 | South Padre Island Golf Club | Tierra del Sol Sundowner | Weekday morning on the coast, about 78 minutes each way |
Week 4 is the long drive, so pair it with a beach afternoon on the island. If you would rather keep driving short, use a second Tierra Santa day instead. Over four weeks that is 12 pass rounds at Tierra del Sol and 12 paid rounds or nines elsewhere.
Adjusting the schedule by month
| Month | McAllen high / low | Wind | Schedule tweak |
|---|---|---|---|
| November | 80F / 60F | 9.1 mph | Winter Texans arrive through the month; tee sheets fill by Thanksgiving week |
| December | 74F / 54F | 9.2 mph | Short days compress tee sheets; book holiday weeks ahead |
| January | 73F / 53F | 9.5 mph | Peak demand and cold fronts; keep the flex day and play later on cold mornings |
| February | 77F / 57F | 10.7 mph | Still peak; book mornings well ahead |
| March | 83F / 63F | 11.5 mph | Windier; avoid the coast in spring-break weeks |
Temperatures and wind are NOAA 1991-2020 normals at McAllen's airport. South Padre spring break fills the coast in mid-March, so move a coast round to another week. Most Winter Texans start heading north late in March, and after Easter (March 28, 2027) times open up.
Fitting in non-golf days
A long winter needs days off. Good flex-day options from the Valley research: Santa Ana National Wildlife Refuge and Bentsen-Rio Grande Valley State Park for birding, the National Butterfly Center, Quinta Mazatlan in McAllen and the beach at South Padre. Our guide to things to do in the Rio Grande Valley has more, and birding and golf in the Rio Grande Valley pairs refuges with nearby courses.
Building the schedule around your passes
The rotation works because the pass covers the cheap repeat rounds and the cash goes on variety. Our Rio Grande Valley golf passes guide lists every pass and card, and Winter Texan golf covers the whole season, from where to base to leagues. For tee-time tactics on busy mornings, see Rio Grande Valley tee times. If you have a winter routine in Arizona, compare it with our Yuma golf weekly schedule.
Plan it on the map
Open the Rio Grande Valley golf map to see every course and drive time from your base. The $30 plan builds this kind of snowbird golf schedule for a whole winter stay, with a weekly rotation that matches your pass, your base and the weeks to avoid.

Questions golfers ask
How many rounds a week should a snowbird golf schedule in Texas include?
Four or five full rounds a week, plus a practice session or a nine, is enough to make a season pass pay off, since Tierra del Sol's $800 three-month package beats its $41 daily cart rate after about 20 rounds.
Which course should be my home course in the Valley?
From a McAllen or Pharr base, Tierra del Sol is the best value home course because its 3-month package includes a round a day with a cart. From a Harlingen base, Tony Butler is the city course, but its current rates and booking method should be confirmed by phone.
What is the best day to play South Padre Island Golf Club?
Monday to Thursday. Rates seen in October 2026 were $69 Monday to Thursday and $79 Friday to Sunday before 2 PM, cart included. Book a morning time, because the afternoon sea breeze off the Laguna Madre usually builds.
Can I play golf in the evening in the Valley?
Yes. Shary Municipal in Mission is lit, with a last tee time of 11 PM and a range open until midnight. Champion Lakes' lit range is open until 10 PM, and Tierra del Sol runs a Friday Night 9-Hole Sundowner event.
How should I handle January cold fronts?
Move rounds to the afternoon or swap a day. January normals at McAllen are about 73F highs and 53F lows, but a front can hold highs in the 50s for a day or two with wind and drizzle. Keep one flexible day in each week for that.
Is Tierra del Sol open on Mondays?
The sources conflict. Its golf site says golf runs Tuesday to Sunday 7 AM to 6 PM and the course is closed on Mondays June to August. The city department page says it is open Monday to Sunday 7 AM to 6 PM, so call before planning a Monday round.
Where can I play when morning tee times are full?
Use twilight rates: Champion Lakes is $37 with cart from 2 PM and Tierra del Sol $28 with cart from 2 PM (seen October 2026). Champion Lakes also has an afternoon couples rate of $30 for two with a cart from 4 PM standard time.
