Slope ladder: Things to do in the Rio Grande Valley between rounds

The best things to do in the Rio Grande Valley for a golfer's day off are outdoors: wildlife refuges and World Birding Center parks along the river, and South Padre Island on the coast. Santa Ana, Bentsen-Rio Grande and Laguna Atascosa top the list. For rainy days, McAllen's art and science museum and Edinburg's history museum fill a half-day.

A winter in the Valley, or even a five-day golf trip, needs a few days off: a cold front, a windy afternoon, a non-golfing partner or tired legs. This guide groups the Valley's best-known attractions by area, matches each with the courses closest to it, and adds a rainy-day list. Hours and fees were not re-checked for every site, so confirm before you drive.

Quick facts

  • Best-known site: Santa Ana National Wildlife Refuge, Alamo.
  • West side: Bentsen-Rio Grande Valley State Park and the National Butterfly Center, both in Mission.

West Valley: Mission and McAllen

The west side has the densest cluster of nature sites, and they sit close to Mission's city course.

Bentsen-Rio Grande Valley State Park is the World Birding Center headquarters. It is car-free inside, with trails, a hawk tower and feeding stations, and Texas Parks and Wildlife charges an entry fee. Beside it on Military Road, the National Butterfly Center runs North American Butterfly Association gardens and trails. The Valley has the highest butterfly diversity in the US, best in fall, but the center has closed temporarily in the past, so check before you go.

Pair either one with a round at Shary Municipal, Mission's 27-hole city course, which posts $21 to walk 18. Shary is lit for night golf with a last tee time of 11 PM, so a park morning and an evening round fit in the same day. If you are staying at Bentsen Grove Resort, a gated 55+ park on the west edge of Mission, Shary is about 8 minutes away. The Shary course guide has the rates.

In McAllen, Quinta Mazatlan is a city-owned 1930s adobe mansion in urban thornforest gardens, just off 10th Street near the airport, and another World Birding Center site. It is a short outing from Champion Lakes, the city course about 7 minutes from downtown.

Central Valley: Alamo, Weslaco and the river

Santa Ana National Wildlife Refuge in Alamo is the Valley's headline nature site and one of the best-known birding spots in the US: green jays, chachalacas, Altamira orioles and winter hawks. It has trails and a tram and visitor center; check refuge hours. Tierra del Sol in Pharr ($41 with a cart) is a convenient public course to pair with it. Winter Texans at Trophy Gardens RV Resort in Alamo have it close by.

Estero Llano Grande State Park in Weslaco is a wetland park with easy boardwalks and a favourite with Winter Texans for waterbirds and the resident pauraque. Pair it with Tierra Santa, the best-rated public course in the mid-Valley on GolfPass, with GolfNow times from $24 (seen October 2026). See the Tierra Santa course guide.

The Old Hidalgo Pumphouse in Hidalgo, a restored early-1900s steam irrigation pumphouse, explains how river water built the Valley's citrus and farm economy, and it has gardens as a World Birding Center site.

Across the river

Many Winter Texans walk across the Progreso bridge to Nuevo Progreso for pharmacies, dentists and lunch. You need a passport, passport card or NEXUS to return, and the US State Department rates Tamaulipas Level 4, with a narrow daytime walk-in exception for Nuevo Progreso. Our Nuevo Progreso day trip guide covers it properly.

The coast: South Padre, Port Isabel and Laguna Atascosa

Some of the most popular things to do in the Rio Grande Valley are on the coast. South Padre Island is about 92 minutes and 73 miles from downtown McAllen on our estimate, so it is a full day from the west Valley and an easy one from Harlingen or Brownsville.

  • Sea Turtle, Inc. on Padre Boulevard is a rescue and rehabilitation center with daily public presentations; admission is charged.
  • Port Isabel Lighthouse (1852) is the only lighthouse on the Texas coast open for climbing, with views over the Laguna Madre and the causeway. The Port Isabel Historical Museum is nearby.
  • Laguna Atascosa National Wildlife Refuge, near Los Fresnos and Laguna Vista, is a large coastal refuge on the Laguna Madre and home to the last wild ocelots in the US, with drive routes and trails from the visitor center.

The golf for a coast day is South Padre Island Golf Club in Laguna Vista: $69 Monday to Thursday and $79 Friday to Sunday before 2 PM, with twilight from $50 (plus 7.75% tax, seen October 2026). Play the morning before the sea breeze builds, then spend the afternoon on the island. If you stay over, Isla Grand Beach Resort is about 19 minutes from the course. Avoid mid-March spring break unless that is the point. More in South Padre Island golf.

Brownsville

Palo Alto Battlefield National Historical Park marks the first battle of the US-Mexican War, on May 8, 1846, with a visitor center and a short trail to the battlefield overlook. It is free. The Gladys Porter Zoo, a well-regarded 26-acre zoo, is partly indoor, and the Children's Museum of Brownsville next door suits visiting grandkids. Brownsville Golf Center, the city's 18, is the nearby round; it posts no rates, so call.
