If you are wondering where to eat in McAllen after golf, the short list is breakfast tacos at Ana Liz Taqueria in Mission, sandwiches and beer at University Draft House, Mexican food at Costa Messa, and dinner at Espana or House Wine & Bistro. Several courses also have their own grill, which is the easy option after a morning round.
This guide to where to eat in McAllen is built for golfers: what is near each course, what the courses themselves serve, and where to go on a coast day. A caveat first. Our dining list comes from the city tourism guide (Explore McAllen, April 2025), Texas Monthly, Edible Rio Grande Valley and MyRGV, and we did not re-check current hours or addresses for every restaurant. Call or check before you drive.

The tourism guide lists Costa Messa, House Wine & Bistro and Delia's Tamales, but we have not verified their addresses, so they are not pinned on our map. Espana is back in its renovated original location on N. Main St, per Edible Rio Grande Valley.
Breakfast tacos before a Mission tee time
Ana Liz Taqueria gets the most attention of any spot in our list. It is chef Ana Liz Pulido's taqueria in downtown Mission, serving breakfast and lunch. Expect a line at peak times. If you are teeing off at Shary Municipal, the Mission city course about 13 minutes from downtown McAllen, it makes sense to eat first and play second, since the taqueria does not serve dinner.
A sandwich and a beer after the round
University Draft House has locations in both McAllen and Edinburg, so it works after either Champion Lakes or Los Lagos. It is casual, which suits a group still in golf clothes.
Golf course restaurants and grills
The simplest answer to where to eat in McAllen after a morning round is often the clubhouse. Here is what each public course on our map offers, with drive times from downtown McAllen.
| Course | Food on site | Drive from downtown McAllen |
|---|---|---|
| Champion Lakes (McAllen) | Remodeled clubhouse and pro shop; no grill hours published | 7 min |
| Shary Municipal (Mission) | Snack bar, 956-580-8774 | 13 min |
| Tierra Del Sol (Pharr) | Grill, 7 AM to 2:30 PM | 14 min |
| Los Lagos (Edinburg) | Putter's Grill | 17 min |
| Llano Grande (Mercedes) | Pro shop and restaurant; resort has Double Bogey Bar & Grill and Cafe Grande | 32 min |
| Rancho Viejo | Club restaurant | 57 min |
| River Bend (Brownsville) | Restaurant at the golf course | 73 min |
Drive times are routed estimates from downtown McAllen and run a little long on the interstates.
A few notes on timing. Tierra Del Sol closes its grill at 2:30 PM, so a twilight round there means eating elsewhere. Shary is lit for night golf with a last tee time of 11 PM, so a snack bar stop and a late nine is a real option on a mild evening. At Llano Grande, the Double Bogey Bar & Grill and Cafe Grande sit inside the Llano Grande Resort, which helps if you are staying there for the winter.
On the Brownsville side, Rancho Viejo El Diablo shares a club restaurant with the villas at Rancho Viejo Resort, and Brownsville restaurants are 15 to 20 minutes south. River Bend has a restaurant at the course, with Brownsville about 15 minutes east.
Where to stay if you want to walk to dinner
Most McAllen golf hotels are on the Expressway 83 and Ware Road side, so dinner means a short drive. If walking to dinner is part of where to eat in McAllen for you, pick downtown.
- Casa de Palmas, Trademark Collection by Wyndham is a short walk from downtown McAllen and the 17th Street entertainment district. Kayak showed rooms from $94 for a Sunday night in early November (seen October 2026; rates change).

Eating on a South Padre Island golf day
South Padre Island Golf Club in Laguna Vista is 78 minutes from downtown McAllen and about 20 minutes from the island hotels. The club suggests booking mornings because the afternoon sea breeze usually builds, which leaves the afternoon for the island.
- Pier 19: bayside seafood on a pier off Padre Blvd, on the Laguna Madre side, known for sunset views. Current hours not verified.
- Captain's Cove Oyster Bar: a few yards from the beach, profiled in MyRGV's South Texas Flavor series.
- Padre Island Brewing Company: the island brewpub, named a Top 100 independent pizzeria by Pizza Today, per a search summary.
If you stay on the island, Margaritaville Beach Resort South Padre Island has the LandShark Bar & Grill, the Salty Rim swim-up bar and Joe Merchant's coffee on site. Our South Padre Island golf guide covers the round itself.
Tips for eating out in Winter Texan season
Where to eat in McAllen changes with the calendar. The Valley's peak season runs roughly November to March, and the research is clear that restaurants fill along with the tee sheets, most of all from January to mid-March. A few habits help.
- Eat early or late. If you play a morning round, lunch at 11 AM beats the noon rush. Afternoon players can eat before the evening crowd.
- Use the course grill on busy days. On a full league morning, the clubhouse is often faster than driving to a restaurant.
- Order tamales ahead in December. Delia's is a Christmas staple, so expect a queue.
- Plan around closing times. Ana Liz is breakfast and lunch only, and the Tierra Del Sol grill closes at 2:30 PM.
- Check before going. Our dining sources were not re-verified for current operation, and some resort restaurants run only in season. The Victoria Restaurant at Victoria Palms RV Resort in Donna, for example, is listed as open November to March.
Eating on a Nuevo Progreso day
Many Winter Texans fold lunch into a walk across the Progreso bridge, about 40 minutes from downtown McAllen. Nuevo Progreso has restaurants within a few blocks of the bridge. Read the State Department advisory first and bring a passport, passport card or NEXUS to return. Our Nuevo Progreso day trip guide has the details.
Fitting meals around a golf week
If you are building a whole trip, a pattern that works: a Mission morning with tacos first and Shary after, a Pharr round finished in time for the Tierra Del Sol grill, and a downtown McAllen dinner on the night you are not playing early. Our Rio Grande Valley golf trip itinerary uses that kind of rhythm, and things to do in the Rio Grande Valley covers the non-golf days. For a Champion Lakes morning followed by lunch nearby, the Champion Lakes course guide has the tee sheet and rates, and the Tierra Del Sol course guide has the Pharr details.
