The best driving range in McAllen is at Champion Lakes, the city course 7 minutes from downtown, lit and open 7 AM to 10 PM (11 AM on Mondays). For later practice, Shary Municipal's range in Mission stays open until midnight, Tierra Del Sol in Pharr sells $5 buckets, and Los Lagos in Edinburg has the best short-game area.
Practice matters more on a long Valley stay than on a short trip. Winter mornings are packed with leagues, especially at Champion Lakes, so range time often fits best in the afternoon or evening. This guide covers every practice facility open to visitors in our research, with hours, prices where published and drive times.

Champion Lakes: the central McAllen driving range
Champion Lakes is the City of McAllen's course, formerly Palm View, and the obvious first stop for range work. The lit range runs from 7 AM to 10 PM, from 11 AM on Mondays, and the clubhouse opens at 6:30 AM, 364 days a year (closed Christmas). Range prices were not on the rate page we read, so ask at the shop.
Two things make it the default. It is central: La Quinta McAllen Convention Center and Embassy Suites are both 4 minutes away. And it is busy in a way that makes practice useful: about thirty Winter Texan leagues call the course home, so a range session before a 2 PM twilight round ($37 with a cart in standard time) is a common pattern.
There is also news for the future. In February 2026 the city announced a new short course co-designed by Lorena Ochoa on land directly west of the course, at 2701-3501 S Ware Rd. No build dates have been published. See the Champion Lakes course guide for rates and tees.
Shary Municipal: the range that stays open until midnight
Shary, Mission's 27-hole city course, has a full-service driving range open 7 AM to midnight, and the course itself is lit for night golf with a last tee time of 11 PM. That is unusual anywhere. If you want a driving range in McAllen's area after Champion Lakes closes at 10 PM, Shary is the one in our research.
Shary is also cheap to play: $21 to walk 18 and $16 for 9 on the city rate sheet, with a cart at $25 for 18 or $12.50 each when shared. The city sells a handicap service at $35 a year, which helps if you are keeping a handicap through a winter of league play. Hampton Inn & Suites Mission is 8 minutes away. The Shary course guide has the rest.
Tierra Del Sol: the cheapest published bucket
Tierra Del Sol, Pharr's city course 14 minutes from downtown, is the one driving range near McAllen in our research with published prices: $5 for a small bucket and $10 for a large one. Golf runs Tuesday to Sunday, 7 AM to 6 PM, though the city's department page says daily, and the course closes Mondays from June to August. There is a grill from 7 AM to 2:30 PM and a Friday Night 9-Hole Sundowner event.
For a seasonal visitor, practice pairs well with Tierra Del Sol's three-month package: $800 single for a round a day with a cart. See the Tierra Del Sol course guide.
Los Lagos: the short-game area
If chipping and bunker play are the priority, Los Lagos in Edinburg is the pick. It has a lit driving range and a short-game area with putting, chipping and a practice bunker. The pro shop is open 7 AM to 8 PM daily, closed Christmas.
The course itself is the longest public layout on the west side, 7,188 yards from the Black tees with water on 11 or 12 holes, but recent GolfPass reviews on conditions are poor. Troon (Indigo Sports) was selected in September 2026 to take over operations, so practice hours and prices may change. Holiday Inn Express Edinburg is 7 minutes away.
Practice in the east Valley
The east side is thinner for practice.
- Tony Butler, Harlingen: a driving range, per directory listings, at the city's 27-hole course. Hours and prices are not published in our research.
- Brownsville Golf Center: putting green only, no driving range, per its TeeOff listing.
- Rancho Viejo: the range bay was closed to the public in January 2026 as the club leans toward members. Ask about practice access if you stay in the resort villas.
- Harlingen Country Club: has a range and short-game area, but it is private and open only to members and their guests.
- Raymondville Municipal: listings show a range and putting green, but the course's status is unclear, so call first.
Par-3 and short courses for practice days
For short-game rounds rather than range time:
- Ebony Hills, Edinburg: a 9-hole, par-35 city course of 3,022 yards, built in 1927 and popular with Winter Texans. A new clubhouse is under construction until about summer 2027, so expect a temporary one.
- Shary's third nine: holes 19 to 27 give a quick nine at the same lit facility.
- RV park par-3s: Tropic Star RV Resort in Pharr and Trophy Gardens RV Resort in Alamo each have a 9-hole par-3 on site. Fees and visitor access are not published, so ask the park office.

Fitting practice into a Valley week
A routine that works for a winter stay: play your league or tee time in the morning, take the windy afternoon off, and hit balls at Champion Lakes or Shary after dinner under the lights. NOAA normals put McAllen's average wind at about 9.5 mph in January, 11.5 in March and 12.2 in April. For building a whole week, see the Rio Grande Valley golf weekly schedule, Winter Texan golf and Rio Grande Valley golf passes. For the full course list, read Rio Grande Valley golf courses.
