Winter Texan golf means spending some or all of November to March in the Rio Grande Valley, living in a park or rental and playing several rounds a week. Most players pick a home course with a season pass, join a league and rotate through cheap city courses. The clearest pass found: $800 for three months in Pharr.
The Valley is set up for this. Its RV and park-model communities fill with retirees from the Midwest, the Plains and Canada, and the city courses run leagues for them. This guide covers when to come, where to base, how the money works and what to book first.
Quick facts
- Season: roughly November to March; busiest January to mid-March.
- Weather: January about 73F highs and 53F lows at McAllen; February about 77F; March about 83F.
- Time zone: Central.
- Best season pass found: Tierra del Sol, $800 for three months, round a day with cart.
- League hub: Champion Lakes, home to about thirty Winter Texan leagues.
- Parks with an 18 on site: Llano Grande (Mercedes) and River Bend (Brownsville).
- Airports: McAllen (MFE), Harlingen (HRL) and Brownsville (BRO).
How Winter Texan golf works
A typical golf winter has four parts:
- A base for one to five months: an RV site, a park model or a rental, usually in a 55+ community.
- A home course with a pass, membership or punch card.
- A league or group game at the home course or through the park.
- A rotation of other courses for variety, often one away day a week.
Season deals for Winter Texan golf are sold by each course. Searches in October 2026 found no Valley-wide golf pass, trail or shared punch card, so you build your own mix. Our guide to Rio Grande Valley golf passes lists every one we found.
When to come
| Month | McAllen high / low | Rain | What it means for golf |
|---|---|---|---|
| November | 80F / 60F | 1.17 in | One of the best months; sheets fill by Thanksgiving (Nov 26, 2026) |
| December | 74F / 54F | 1.06 in | Most Winter Texans settled; holiday weeks busy; short days |
| January | 73F / 53F | 0.77 in | Peak season and cold fronts; hardest month for morning times |
| February | 77F / 57F | 0.72 in | Dry and breezier; still peak; book mornings well ahead |
| March | 83F / 63F | 1.38 in | Windier; departures start late in the month |
| April | 88F / 68F | 1.43 in | Crowd mostly gone after Easter; times open up |
These are NOAA 1991-2020 normals for McAllen's airport. Valley courses are bermudagrass and are not known for long overseed closures, but after a hard freeze or a run of cold fronts the fairways can go tan and semi-dormant for weeks. That is general guidance, not checked course by course. Our best time to golf in the Rio Grande Valley guide has the full year.
Hurricane season runs June 1 to November 30, so a stay that starts in early November overlaps its last weeks.
Where to base
The Valley strings out along I-2 from Mission to Harlingen, then south to Brownsville. Pick a base near the courses you will play most.
- West (Mission, McAllen, Pharr, Edinburg): the most courses within 20 minutes. Champion Lakes, Shary, Tierra del Sol, Los Lagos and Ebony Hills are all 7 to 17 minutes from downtown McAllen. Parks here include Bentsen Grove in Mission (Shary about 8 minutes) and Tropic Star in Pharr (Tierra del Sol about 7).
- Mid-Valley (Alamo, Donna, Weslaco, Mercedes): reach both ends in about half an hour. Llano Grande Resort has its own 18; Victoria Palms in Donna is 13 minutes from Tierra Santa.
- East (Harlingen, San Benito, Brownsville): Tony Butler, Treasure Hills, the two Rancho Viejo courses (El Diablo and El Angel) and River Bend. River Bend Resort has RV lots on its own course.
- The coast: South Padre Island suits a beach winter but is far from most golf. The nearest course, South Padre Island Golf Club in Laguna Vista, is about 20 minutes from the island hotels on our routed estimate.
Our where to stay in the Rio Grande Valley in winter guide compares the four, and RV resorts with golf in the Texas Valley covers the parks.
What a golf winter costs
Winter Texan golf prices seen on October 26, 2026 (rates change, and some cards are undated):
| Course | Season option | Price |
|---|---|---|
| Tierra del Sol (Pharr) | 3 months, round a day with cart | $800 single / $1,200 couple |
| Tierra del Sol (Pharr) | 10 rounds with cart | $340 |
| Shary (Mission) | Annual green-fee membership | $900 |
| Shary (Mission) | 20 rounds, 18 holes | $400 (undated sheet) |
| Champion Lakes (McAllen) | 20-round Smart Card | $561 |
| River Bend (Brownsville) | 3-month seasonal membership | $200 a month plus $100 trail or $150 cart fee |
| Llano Grande (Mercedes) | Seasonal and annual memberships | Not published |
At Tierra del Sol, if you play 60 rounds over three months, the $800 package works out at about $13 a round including a cart. The 1-month package ($350) is not sold January to March, so a peak-season visitor needs the 3-month option. The Tierra del Sol course guide has the full card.
On the stay side, published 3-month RV rates in the west and central Valley ran from $1,400 (Bentsen Grove, standard site) to $2,220 (Tropic Star), plus metered electric, and a one-bedroom park model at Tropic Star was $1,500 a month in season. See Rio Grande Valley monthly rentals.
Winter Texan golf leagues and group games
Champion Lakes is the league center of the Valley, home to about thirty Winter Texan leagues. That is great if you want a regular game and less great if you want a quiet Tuesday morning tee time. A past city report said new annual memberships there were capped with a waiting list, while non-members keep access.
Parks run their own golf too. Llano Grande advertises leagues, group play and tournaments on its course, and River Bend sells 3-month seasonal golf memberships. Ask your park's activity office in your first week. The Champion Lakes course guide has the course details.
Getting Winter Texan golf tee times in peak season
- Book as early as each course allows. No Valley course publishes its booking window.
- Use twilight when mornings are full: Champion Lakes is $37 with cart from 2 PM, Tierra del Sol $28 with cart from 2 PM.
- Use the lights: Shary takes tee times until 11 PM.
- Spread your rounds. A weekly away day at Tierra Santa, Llano Grande or the Harlingen courses keeps you off the busiest sheets.
Our snowbird golf schedule turns this into a weekly rotation.
Rules for Canadian snowbirds
Three clocks matter for a Canadian golf winter. US immigration normally admits Canadian visitors for up to six months, at the officer's discretion. The IRS substantial presence test counts days this year plus a third of last year's and a sixth of the year before; 183 weighted days makes you a US tax resident unless you file Form 8840 by June 15, and staying under about 120 days every year keeps you below it. Provincial health plans each set their own limit on time away, and separate out-of-country medical insurance is essential.
Since April 11, 2025, Canadians aged 14 or older staying 30 days or more who did not get an I-94, for example because they drove in, must register with USCIS. This is general information only, not tax or legal advice. Our Canadian snowbirds in Texas guide covers flights and drives from Canada.
Getting here
McAllen's airport (MFE) is about 5 minutes from downtown and has nonstops to Dallas/Fort Worth, Houston and a few other cities. Harlingen (HRL) is the Valley's Southwest airport and has winter nonstops from the upper Midwest: seasonal Chicago O'Hare on American Eagle from December 19, 2026, and seasonal Minneapolis/St. Paul on Delta and Sun Country. Neither has a nonstop from Canada. Most snowbirds who drive split the trip over three or four days.
If you are choosing between winter golf towns, our Yuma winter golf for snowbirds guide is the Arizona equivalent.
