Cover: Canadian snowbirds in Texas: flights, drives, day counts and a golf plan

Canadian snowbirds in Texas mostly winter in the Rio Grande Valley, and the logistics are simple once you know the numbers. There is no nonstop flight from Canada, so you connect through Dallas, Houston, Phoenix, Minneapolis or Chicago, or drive three or four days. Then you watch three day-count clocks and pick a course package.

The Valley has long drawn Winter Texans from Canada, the Midwest and the Plains to its 55+ RV resorts, park models and rentals from roughly November to March. This guide covers the trip down, the day counts, time zones and a golf plan built on the passes that are actually published. Prices were seen in October 2026 and change, and the stay rules are general information, not tax or legal advice.

Quick facts

  • Nonstops from Canada: none to McAllen (MFE), Harlingen (HRL) or Brownsville (BRO).
  • Best connections: DFW, Houston (IAH) or Phoenix to MFE; seasonal Minneapolis and Chicago to HRL.
  • Drive: about 2,900 km from Winnipeg to 3,600 km from Calgary on routed estimates.
  • US visit length: normally up to six months; the border officer decides.
  • Time zone: Central. Same as Winnipeg; an hour behind Toronto.
  • Golf value: Tierra del Sol's 3-month package, $800 single or $1,200 couple, a round a day with a cart.

Flying from Canada to the Rio Grande Valley

None of the three Valley airports had a nonstop from Canada on the Wikipedia airline tables we read in October 2026, so every flight connects.

Airport Drive to downtown McAllen Useful connections for Canadians
McAllen (MFE)5 minAmerican to Dallas/Fort Worth; United to Houston; American Eagle to Phoenix (daily from June 4, 2026)
Harlingen (HRL)50 minSeasonal Minneapolis/St. Paul (Delta, Sun Country); Chicago O'Hare (American Eagle, from Dec 19, 2026); Southwest to Dallas Love, Houston Hobby, Austin
Brownsville (BRO)76 minAmerican Eagle to Dallas/Fort Worth; United Express to Houston
San Antonio (SAT)276 minLarge airport with many US nonstops

Seasonal routes change, so check the airline timetable before you book. MFE is the pick if your base is McAllen, Mission, Pharr or Edinburg. HRL is the airport with winter flights from the upper Midwest and is more central for Harlingen, Weslaco and the coast. Our flights to McAllen guide compares them in more detail.

Driving from Canada to the Valley

Most Canadian snowbirds drive, because a car or RV is the way to get around a Valley winter. Routed estimates to downtown McAllen from the free OSRM router, which tends to run long on interstates:

From Distance Routed driving time
Winnipeg2,901 km (1,803 mi)About 31 hr
Toronto3,103 km (1,928 mi)About 35 hr
Regina3,223 kmAbout 37 hr
Saskatoon3,486 kmAbout 40 hr
Calgary3,629 kmAbout 40 hr

Real driving is usually a little shorter, and most people split it over three or four days. Typical routes from Manitoba run through the Emerson/Pembina crossing and I-29 to Kansas City, then I-35 to San Antonio and US-281 south. Saskatchewan and Alberta drivers often use US-83 or I-29 and I-35 through the Plains. From Ontario, the usual line runs via Detroit or Port Huron and south to I-35 or the Gulf coast. These are general patterns, not route checks. Winter storms on the Plains can close I-29 and I-94, so leave room in the schedule. Our drive to the Rio Grande Valley guide covers the routes and stops.

The day counts Canadian snowbirds track

Three separate clocks matter, and the popular "182-day rule" is shorthand for them, not one law.

  1. US immigration. Canadian visitors are normally admitted for up to six months. US Customs and Border Protection decides at the border.
  2. US tax. The IRS substantial presence test counts every day this year, one third of last year's days and one sixth of the year before. If that reaches 183 weighted days, with at least 31 this year, you can be treated as a US tax resident unless you file Form 8840 (the Closer Connection Exception) by June 15. Staying under about 120 days every year keeps you below 183.
  3. Provincial health coverage. Each province sets its own limit on time away, commonly around 182 to 183 days in 12 months. Ontario's OHIP allows up to 212 days. Separate out-of-country medical insurance is essential.

Since April 11, 2025, Canadians aged 14 and over who stay 30 days or more and did not receive an I-94, which includes most who drive in, must register with USCIS. Keep your I-94 record if you have one.

These rules change, and none of this is tax or legal advice. Check with the agencies or an adviser before you set your dates. Texas has no state income tax.

Crossing into Mexico from the Valley

Many Winter Texans walk into Nuevo Progreso for the day. Canadians need a passport or NEXUS to re-enter the US. The US State Department rates Tamaulipas at Level 4, with a narrow daytime exception around the Progreso bridge, so read the current advisory first. Our Nuevo Progreso day trip guide has the details.

Time zones for Canadian snowbirds in Texas

The Valley is on Central Time with daylight saving. It runs on Central Standard Time from November 1, 2026 to March 14, 2027.

  • Manitoba (Winnipeg): same time as McAllen all year.
  • Ontario (Toronto): one hour ahead.
  • Saskatchewan: same as McAllen in winter, one hour behind from mid-March.
  • Alberta: under its Official Time Act (in force June 18, 2026) Alberta stays on UTC-6 all year, so it matches McAllen in winter and is an hour behind from mid-March.

A golf plan for a Canadian winter

Most Valley courses do not publish senior or Winter Texan rates, and no Valley-wide golf pass was found, so the plan is a home course package plus pay-as-you-go rounds elsewhere.

Course Season option (seen Oct 2026) Per round
Tierra del Sol, Pharr3 months $800 single / $1,200 couple, one round a day with cart; extra month $350/$500Daily rate $41 with cart
Shary, Mission20-round 18-hole card about $400; annual green fees $900$21 walking
Champion Lakes, McAllen20-round Smart Card $561 (expires after 18 months)$33 walking, $47 with cart
River Bend, BrownsvilleSeasonal membership $200/month individual plus trail or cart feeNot posted

Tierra del Sol's 1-month package ($350) is not sold January to March, so a peak-season stay needs the 3-month plan. Champion Lakes is home to about thirty Winter Texan leagues, which is a good way to find regular games, but it also means busy winter mornings. Our Rio Grande Valley golf passes guide lists every published pass, and the Tierra del Sol course guide and Champion Lakes course guide cover the two busiest home courses.

Where Canadian snowbirds stay

The Valley's winter parks publish monthly and seasonal rates. Bentsen Grove Resort in Mission listed three months on a standard site for $1,400 plus electric, about 8 minutes from Shary. Tropic Star RV Resort in Pharr is 7 minutes from Tierra del Sol, at $2,220 for three months. If you want golf at the door, Llano Grande Resort in Mercedes has its own 18 and monthly RV sites from $795 plus electric. Our guide to where to stay in the Rio Grande Valley in winter compares the bases.

When Canadian snowbirds arrive and leave

Winter Texans start arriving late in October and through November, and tee sheets fill by Thanksgiving week (November 26, 2026). January to mid-March is the busiest stretch, with January normals of about 73F highs and 53F lows at McAllen and the odd cold front that holds highs in the 50s for a day or two. Departures pick up from mid-March and after Easter (March 28, 2027). Hurricane season runs June 1 to November 30, so an early-November arrival is still inside it. Our winter Texan golf guide covers how the season runs, and if you are weighing Arizona instead, our Yuma guide for Canadian snowbirds in Yuma covers the other side of the sun belt.
