The key number: Drive to the Rio Grande Valley: times and routes for a golf winter

To drive to the Rio Grande Valley you come in on one of two roads: US-281 (I-69C) from San Antonio, or US-77 (I-69E) from Corpus Christi and Houston. Our routed times to McAllen are about 6.5 hours from Houston, 31 hours from Winnipeg and 35 from Toronto, and those estimates run long. Most snowbirds take 3-4 days from Canada.

Many Winter Texans make the drive to the Rio Grande Valley because they want their car, RV or golf clubs for the whole season. This guide covers drive times from the Texas cities, the Plains and Canada, the usual routes, the checkpoints on the way home and where to start golfing once you arrive. All times are OSRM router estimates queried in October 2026.

Quick facts

  • Two ways in: US-281 (I-69C) from San Antonio into Edinburg and Pharr; US-77 (I-69E) from Corpus Christi into Harlingen.
  • Houston: about 398 minutes and 348 miles (likely overstated).
  • Winnipeg: about 31 hours, 1,803 miles; Toronto: about 35 hours, 1,928 miles.
  • Checkpoints: northbound only, on US-281 south of Falfurrias and US-77 at Sarita.
  • Winter risk: storms on the Plains can close I-29 and I-94.
  • Time zone: Central Time; Manitoba matches McAllen all year.

OSRM free-flow estimates from the public router, queried October 26, 2026. OSRM tends to run 10-20 percent long on interstate legs, so real driving is typically shorter.

We did not route times from Midwest US cities for this guide, so check a mapping app for your start. If you would rather fly, Harlingen lists seasonal nonstops from Chicago O'Hare (from December 19, 2026) and Minneapolis/St. Paul.

The routes

From Houston

From downtown Houston, the route is US-59/I-69 toward Victoria, then US-77/I-69E south through Kingsville and Raymondville into Harlingen, then I-2 west to McAllen. Our router gives 398 minutes, but it likely overstates this drive by an hour or more. Houston is a United hub with nonstops to all three Valley airports, so drive only as part of a longer road trip or if you need your car. Northbound US-77 has a Border Patrol checkpoint at Sarita.

From San Antonio

US-281 south through George West and Falfurrias, about 276 minutes and 250 miles. It is long and empty south of George West. The northbound checkpoint is south of Falfurrias. Our San Antonio to McAllen drive guide covers this leg and a golf plan for each end.

From Canada and the Plains

These are the typical patterns in our research. They are general routes, not checked turn by turn.

  • Manitoba: cross at Emerson/Pembina, take I-29 to Kansas City, then I-35 to San Antonio and US-281 south.
  • Saskatchewan and Alberta: down through the Plains on US-83 or I-29/I-35.
  • Ontario: via Detroit or Port Huron, then south through the Mississippi valley to I-35 or the Gulf coast.

Winter storms on the Plains can close I-29 and I-94. Leave a spare day in the schedule for the northern legs, and plan to split the drive over 3-4 days. The Valley end of the trip is mild by comparison: January normals at McAllen are about 73F for the high and 53F for the low, so the cold-weather driving is all at the northern end.

Arriving: paperwork and clocks

For Canadians, the drive raises a few rules that flying does not. Our research notes that since April 11, 2025, Canadians aged 14 and over staying 30 days or more who did not get an I-94, for example those who drove in, must register with USCIS. Canadian visitors are normally admitted for up to six months, and CBP decides at the border. Provincial health plans set their own limits on time away. These rules change, and this is general information, not legal or tax advice. Our guide for Canadian snowbirds in Texas explains the day counts.

The Valley is on Central Time, with standard time from November 1, 2026 to March 14, 2027. Winnipeg is on the same time all year, Toronto is one hour ahead, and Saskatchewan and Alberta match McAllen in winter.

Once you arrive: the I-2 corridor

After the long drive to the Rio Grande Valley, the local driving is simple. I-2 (the US-83 Expressway) runs east-west through Mission, McAllen, Pharr, San Juan, Alamo, Weslaco and Mercedes to Harlingen. There it meets I-69E (US-77), which runs south through San Benito to Brownsville. I-69C (US-281) runs north from Pharr and Edinburg toward San Antonio.

From downtown McAllen, our router gives about 50 minutes to Harlingen's airport, 71 minutes to downtown Brownsville, 92 minutes to South Padre Island and 40 minutes to the Progreso bridge. That means the road you arrive on matters less than where you base yourself. Pick a park or hotel close to the courses you will play most, and treat the coast as a day trip.

Where to start golfing after the drive

Arriving tired is a good reason to play close to where the highway drops you.

Bringing the RV

If you are towing or driving an RV for the season, the parks in our research publish very different terms. Llano Grande Resort in Mercedes has its own 18-hole course and RV sites from $795 to $1,395 a month plus metered electric. Tropic Star RV Resort in Pharr, where US-281 enters the Valley, listed a three-month RV site at $2,220 plus electric. On the US-77 side, Fun-N-Sun RV Resort in San Benito is about 11 minutes from Tony Butler, though recent reviews are mixed and rates are by phone. Our guide to RV resorts with golf in the Texas Valley compares them.

Book a site before you leave. Monthly RV sites fill first in the Winter Texan season, which runs roughly November to March.

When to make the drive

The timing of a drive to the Rio Grande Valley matters as much as the route, because morning tee times, leagues and monthly RV sites fill first. Winter Texans start arriving in late October and keep coming through November, and tee sheets fill by Thanksgiving week. Arriving early in November gets you settled before the busiest weeks. Hurricane season runs to November 30, so keep arrival dates flexible if you plan to come in October. See Rio Grande Valley golf in November and our winter Texan golf guide. If the fares are good, compare driving with flights to McAllen. For Albertans weighing Arizona instead, see our Calgary to Yuma drive.

Questions golfers ask

How long is the drive to the Rio Grande Valley from Canada?

Our routed estimates to downtown McAllen are about 31 hours from Winnipeg (1,803 miles), 35 hours from Toronto (1,928 miles), 37 from Regina, and about 40 from Saskatoon and Calgary. The router runs slow, so real driving is typically shorter. Most snowbirds split the trip over 3-4 days.

How long is the drive from Houston to McAllen?

Our router gives 398 minutes and 348 miles from downtown Houston via US-59/I-69, US-77/I-69E and I-2 west. It likely overstates this drive by an hour or more. Northbound US-77 has a Border Patrol checkpoint at Sarita.

What route do Canadians take to the Valley?

Typical patterns, not route-checked: Manitobans cross at Emerson/Pembina and take I-29 to Kansas City, then I-35 to San Antonio and US-281 south. Saskatchewan and Alberta drivers come down through the Plains on US-83 or I-29/I-35. Ontario drivers go via Detroit or Port Huron and south through the Mississippi valley to I-35 or the Gulf coast.

Are there Border Patrol checkpoints on the way to the Valley?

Yes, for northbound traffic leaving the Valley. There is one on US-281 south of Falfurrias and one on US-77 at Sarita. You meet them on the drive home, not the drive down.

What are the winter road risks?

Winter storms on the Plains can close I-29 and I-94, so leave slack in your schedule for the northern part of the trip. The Valley itself is mild, with January lows around 53F at McAllen.

Do Canadians who drive need to register in the US?

Our research notes that since April 11, 2025, Canadians aged 14 and over staying 30 days or more who did not get an I-94, for example those who drove in, must register with USCIS. Rules change, so check before you travel. This is general information, not legal advice.

Where should I golf first after a long drive?

Play close to where you arrive. From US-281 the Pharr and Edinburg courses are right off the highway, and from US-77 Harlingen's Tony Butler and Treasure Hills are the first public courses. Tierra del Sol in Pharr posts $41 with a cart.
