Open the 3D map of every course →
The San Antonio to McAllen drive is about 250 miles on US-281 south through George West and Falfurrias, roughly 4.5 hours on our routed estimate, which tends to run long. The road enters the Valley at Edinburg and Pharr, so the easiest golf plan is a round there on arrival and another on the way out. Remember the northbound checkpoint south of Falfurrias.
Plenty of golfers land in San Antonio for the fares and nonstops, and plenty of Winter Texans come down I-35 to San Antonio before the last leg south. Either way, the final stretch is the same. This guide covers the route, the checkpoint, timing and a simple plan for playing at both ends of the drive, with rates seen in October 2026.
Quick facts
- Distance: about 250 miles from San Antonio International Airport to downtown McAllen.
- Time: about 276 minutes on the OSRM router, which often runs 10-20 percent long on interstates.
- Route: US-281 south through George West and Falfurrias, becoming I-69C into Edinburg and Pharr.
- Checkpoint: Border Patrol on US-281 south of Falfurrias, northbound.
- Time zone: Central Time at both ends.
- First courses: Edinburg and Pharr, right where the highway arrives.
The San Antonio to McAllen drive, step by step
- San Antonio to George West. Head south out of San Antonio on US-281.
- George West to Falfurrias. The road gets long and empty south of George West, so it is a sensible place to fill the tank and take a break first.
- Falfurrias to the Valley. Continue south. Northbound drivers meet the Border Patrol checkpoint on this stretch, south of Falfurrias.
- Into Edinburg and Pharr. US-281 runs as I-69C into the Valley, past Edinburg to Pharr, where it meets I-2 (the US-83 Expressway). Turn west on I-2 for McAllen and Mission, or east for Weslaco, Mercedes and Harlingen.
The checkpoint on the way back
The Border Patrol checkpoint on US-281 south of Falfurrias stops northbound traffic. You will not see it on the drive down, but you will on the drive back to San Antonio. Have identification ready for everyone in the car. Canadians should carry passports and keep their I-94 record if they have one. Build a little slack into the return if you are catching a flight.
Drive times from San Antonio and other Texas starts
| Start | Route | Estimated time | Distance |
|---|---|---|---|
| San Antonio Intl (SAT) | US-281 / I-69C via George West and Falfurrias | 276 min | 250 mi |
| Downtown Corpus Christi | US-77 via Kingsville and Raymondville, then I-2 west | 176 min | 155.5 mi |
| Downtown Houston | US-59/I-69, US-77/I-69E south, I-2 west | 398 min | 348 mi |
| McAllen airport (MFE) | Local | 5 min | 2.1 mi |
OSRM free-flow estimates to downtown McAllen, queried October 2026. They tend to run long on interstate legs, and the Houston figure likely overstates the drive by an hour or more.
Is driving from San Antonio worth it?
Whether the San Antonio to McAllen drive is worth it depends on the fare gap and how much time you have. San Antonio is a large airport with many US nonstops, and fares are often lower. McAllen's own airport is about 5 minutes from downtown, with American, United, Delta Connection and Allegiant service. A round trip from San Antonio adds roughly nine hours of driving on our estimate, plus a rental car for the whole trip.
For a weekend, that usually costs too much golf. For a week or longer, or a winter stay where you want your own car anyway, it can make sense. Our guide to flights to McAllen compares the three Valley airports, and drive to the Rio Grande Valley covers longer road trips from Houston and Canada.
A golf plan for both ends of the drive
The files for this guide cover the Valley courses only, so there is no recommended stop along US-281. The good news is that the highway arrives right next to a cluster of courses, so you can play on the day you arrive or the day you leave without crossing the Valley.
Arrival day: Edinburg
- Ebony Hills is Edinburg's historic 9-hole city course, one of the Valley's oldest (1927, John Bredemus). It is 3,022 yards at par 35, an easy loosen-up after hours in the car. The city calls it very affordable and one of the most popular courses with Winter Texans; book on Teesnap. A new clubhouse is being built, so expect a temporary facility through summer 2027.
- Los Lagos is the longer test: a 2001 Robert von Hagge water course, 7,188 yards from the black tees (74.2 rating, 132 slope). Recent upkeep reviews are weak, and Troon was selected in September 2026 to take over operations, so check recent reviews first. The Los Lagos course guide has the detail.
- Monte Cristo, in a 55+ community north of Edinburg, is well rated by players (GolfPass 4.3 from 355 reviews). Visitor access is likely but should be confirmed by phone.
Departure day: Pharr or McAllen
On the way out, a morning round close to I-69C keeps the drive simple.
- Tierra del Sol in Pharr posts $26 to walk 18 and $41 with a cart, with online tee times. It is about 14 minutes from downtown McAllen. See the Tierra del Sol course guide.
- Champion Lakes, the McAllen city course, is $33 to walk and $47 with a cart (rates effective February 1, 2026), about 7 minutes from downtown McAllen.
Finish by late morning and you are back in San Antonio in the late afternoon, allowing for the checkpoint.
| Course | Holes / par | Posted rate | Drive from downtown McAllen |

| Ebony Hills, Edinburg | 9 / 35 | Not posted ("very affordable") | 15 min |
| Los Lagos, Edinburg | 18 / 72 | Not posted; reviewer cites $26 twilight with cart (undated) | 17 min |

Where to stay at the end of the drive
After the San Antonio to McAllen drive, a room near where US-281 arrives keeps the first evening simple. Holiday Inn Express & Suites Edinburg-McAllen Area is on Business 281 in south Edinburg, about 4 minutes from Ebony Hills and 7 from Los Lagos, with free parking. Kayak showed rooms from $90 for a Wednesday night in late October 2026, which is a typical price, not a quote. If you would rather be in McAllen, La Quinta Inn & Suites McAllen Convention Center is about 4 minutes from Champion Lakes. For Winter Texans arriving for the season, Tropic Star RV Resort in Pharr is about 7 minutes from Tierra del Sol.

Coming down I-35 from farther north
For many Winter Texans the San Antonio to McAllen drive is the last leg of a much longer one. The typical Manitoba route in our research crosses at Emerson/Pembina, takes I-29 to Kansas City, then I-35 to San Antonio and US-281 south. Our router puts Winnipeg at about 31 hours to downtown McAllen, which most snowbirds split over 3-4 days. If that is you, San Antonio is a natural overnight before the final 250 miles, so you arrive in the Valley with daylight to spare. Winter storms on the Plains can close I-29 and I-94, so leave a spare day at the northern end rather than rushing the US-281 leg.
Timing the drive
The best golf months in the Valley are November through March, with November one of the best. Winter Texans arrive from late October through November, so book a first round and a room before you set off in that window. For month-by-month advice, see the best time to golf in the Rio Grande Valley. If you know the Arizona side, our Phoenix to Yuma drive is a similar big-city-to-golf-town run.
Plan it on the map
Open the Rio Grande Valley golf map to see where US-281 meets the Edinburg and Pharr courses, with drive times to every stay. The $30 plan can fit your arrival and departure rounds around the drive, or plan a full winter with a weekly course rotation.

Questions golfers ask
How long is the San Antonio to McAllen drive?
Our routed estimate from San Antonio International Airport to downtown McAllen is about 276 minutes and 250 miles via US-281 (I-69C). That router tends to run 10-20 percent long on interstate legs, so many drivers will be quicker. Allow for stops and traffic.
What route do you take from San Antonio to McAllen?
Take US-281 south through George West and Falfurrias. It becomes I-69C as it approaches the Valley and reaches Edinburg and Pharr, where it meets I-2 (the US-83 Expressway) through McAllen.
Is there a Border Patrol checkpoint between McAllen and San Antonio?
Yes. There is a Border Patrol checkpoint on US-281 south of Falfurrias for northbound traffic, so it affects the drive back to San Antonio, not the drive down. Have identification ready for everyone in the car.
Are there golf courses on the way from San Antonio to McAllen?
Our research covers the Valley only, so we have no course to recommend along US-281. The first courses in the files are in Edinburg and Pharr, close to where the highway enters the Valley.
Should I fly into San Antonio or McAllen?
San Antonio often has cheaper fares and many more nonstops. McAllen's airport is about 5 minutes from downtown, so the time saved is most of a day. Compare the fare difference with the cost of a rental and a long drive each way.
Where should I play first after the drive?
Edinburg is the natural first stop. Ebony Hills, a historic 9-holer, suits a short warm-up, and Los Lagos is the longest public layout on the west side. Tierra del Sol in Pharr has online tee times and a posted rate of $41 with a cart.
Where can I stay near US-281 in the Valley?
Holiday Inn Express & Suites Edinburg-McAllen Area sits on Business 281 in south Edinburg, about 4 minutes from Ebony Hills and 7 from Los Lagos. Kayak showed rooms from $90 for a Wednesday in late October 2026.
