Flights to McAllen land at McAllen International (MFE), about 5 minutes from downtown, but the Rio Grande Valley has three airports. Harlingen (HRL) has Southwest and winter nonstops from Chicago and Minneapolis, and Brownsville (BRO) suits the coast. None has a nonstop from Canada. Pick the airport by where you will play, then rent a car.
Downtown Brownsville is about 60 miles from downtown McAllen, with South Padre Island beyond that. Landing at the wrong end can add an hour to every golf day. This guide compares the three Valley airports, the larger Texas airports some golfers use instead, and which courses and stays each one serves best, with routes as listed in October 2026.
Quick facts
- MFE (McAllen): closest to Mission, McAllen and Edinburg; about 5 minutes from downtown McAllen.
- HRL (Harlingen): Southwest, plus seasonal Chicago and Minneapolis; about 50 minutes from downtown McAllen.
- BRO (Brownsville): best for Brownsville, Rancho Viejo and South Padre; about 76 minutes from downtown McAllen.
- From Canada: no nonstops; connect through DFW, IAH or PHX.
- Time zone: Central Time.
- Car: needed in every case.

Drive times are free-flow estimates from the OSRM router to downtown McAllen, which tend to run 10-20 percent long on interstates. Airline lists come from airport tables, not airline timetables, so check seasonal routes before you book.
Fly into McAllen (MFE) for the west Valley
MFE is the obvious choice if your golf is on the west side. Champion Lakes, the McAllen city course, is about 7 minutes from downtown, and Shary Municipal in Mission about 13. Tierra del Sol in Pharr is about 14, and Edinburg's Los Lagos about 17. The Champion Lakes course guide covers the closest round to the airport.
Flights to McAllen connect through Dallas/Fort Worth, Houston-Intercontinental and, since June 2026, Phoenix, which is useful for golfers coming from the western US. Canadians heading to McAllen usually connect through one of those three hubs.
The hotels in our research nearest MFE are all about 2 miles away: Casa de Palmas downtown and the convention-center pair. La Quinta Inn & Suites McAllen Convention Center lists a free airport shuttle and is about 4 minutes from Champion Lakes. Embassy Suites McAllen Convention Center is next door, with suites and free breakfast. See where to stay in McAllen for golf for more.
Fly into Harlingen (HRL) for the middle and east
HRL is the Valley's Southwest airport and the one with winter nonstops from the upper Midwest. For Winter Texans coming from Illinois or Minnesota, the seasonal Chicago O'Hare service (from December 19, 2026) and the Minneapolis/St. Paul flights on Delta and Sun Country can save a connection.
It is also the most central airport. Tony Butler, Harlingen's 27-hole city course, and Treasure Hills are both a short drive, and Hampton Inn & Suites Harlingen sits between them, about 8 minutes from each. From the Hampton, Rancho Viejo is about 16 minutes and South Padre Island Golf Club about 36. If you plan to play both ends of the Valley, HRL is often the best compromise. Our Harlingen golf courses guide and the Tony Butler course guide cover that side.
Fly into Brownsville (BRO) for the coast
BRO has the fewest routes (American Eagle to DFW, United Express to IAH, Breeze to Orlando and Aerus to Monterrey), but it is the closest airport to Rancho Viejo, Laguna Vista and South Padre Island. If your trip is built around the island or the Rancho Viejo El Diablo and El Angel courses, it saves a long drive at both ends.
Rancho Viejo Resort has villas on the El Diablo course, and Courtyard by Marriott Brownsville lists a free airport shuttle and is about 11 minutes from Rancho Viejo. For the island, South Padre Island Golf Club is about 20 minutes from Margaritaville Beach Resort. The Rancho Viejo El Diablo course guide and our Brownsville golf courses guide have more.
San Antonio and Houston as alternatives
San Antonio often has cheaper fares and many more nonstops, and the drive is simple: US-281 (I-69C) south through George West and Falfurrias, about 276 minutes and 250 miles on our estimate. There is a Border Patrol checkpoint on US-281 south of Falfurrias for northbound traffic, so it affects the drive back. Our San Antonio to McAllen drive guide covers it in detail.
Houston is a different case. IAH is a United hub with nonstops to all three Valley airports, so connecting is usually easier than driving: our router puts downtown Houston at 398 minutes from McAllen, though it likely overstates that leg by an hour or more. Drive from Houston only as part of a longer road trip.
Getting around once you land
Whichever airport you choose, you need a car. The Valley is built along one main road: I-2 (the US-83 Expressway) runs east-west through Mission, McAllen, Pharr, Weslaco and Mercedes to Harlingen, where I-69E (US-77) heads south through San Benito to Brownsville. From downtown McAllen, our router puts HRL at about 50 minutes, downtown Brownsville at about 71, South Padre Island at about 92 and the Progreso bridge at about 40.
That shape is why the airport choice matters. Flights to McAllen put you at the west end of that corridor, so a coastal round becomes a long day, while a Harlingen landing puts most of the Valley inside an hour. Rental car prices were not part of our research, so compare them at each airport when you price the flights.
Choosing your airport
- Playing mostly Mission, McAllen and Edinburg: flights to McAllen (MFE).
- Splitting the Valley, or coming from Chicago or Minneapolis in winter: HRL.
- Staying on South Padre or at Rancho Viejo: BRO.
- Fare-driven, with a day to spare: SAT, then drive.
- Coming from Canada: connect through DFW, IAH or PHX to MFE, or through DFW or IAH to HRL or BRO.
The Valley is on Central Time, and the clocks fall back on November 1, 2026 and spring forward on March 14, 2027. For Canadian visitors in winter, Toronto is one hour ahead and Winnipeg is on the same time. Our guide for Canadian snowbirds in Texas covers day counts and longer stays, and drive to the Rio Grande Valley compares driving down. If you also winter in Arizona, our flying to Yuma guide works the same way.
Plan it on the map
Open the Rio Grande Valley golf map to see each course and stay with drive times, so you can match the airport to your rounds. The $30 plan builds the trip day by day from the airport you pick, or covers a whole winter stay with a weekly course rotation.
