Slope ladder: Harlingen golf courses: Tony Butler, Treasure Hills and the San Benito side

Harlingen golf courses come down to two public options: Tony Butler, the city's 27-hole course, at about $36 with a cart, and Treasure Hills, a longer 18 on the east side at about $40. Harlingen Country Club is private. San Benito has no course we could confirm, but it is 11-15 minutes from Tony Butler and Rancho Viejo.

Harlingen sits where I-2 meets I-69E, so the Harlingen golf courses sit at the hinge of the Valley: 44 minutes from McAllen, about 16-21 minutes from Rancho Viejo and under an hour from South Padre's beach hotels. This guide covers the town's courses, the San Benito side and where to stay. The fees we found are undated, so call before you go.

Tony Butler Golf Course

Tony Butler is the City of Harlingen's course at 2640 S M St: a flat municipal 18 of about 6,400 yards, par 71, plus a nine-hole course of about 2,600 yards, par 35. It has a driving range. The general manager told the local paper the course gets about 40,000 rounds a year, much of it from Winter Texans, so winter mornings are busy.

The nine has had a rocky few years. The city closed holes 19-27 to cut maintenance costs, then reopened them after a split commission vote. In 2021, local coverage reported the city proposing to sell land worth five holes and falling short of funding an overhaul. Ask whether all 27 are open when you book.

On price, the only figure we found is $36 with a cart, from a report of a rise from $28 effective November 7. One member reported paying about $1,450 a year in membership fees, and the general manager was considering group discounts for RV parks. All of this is dated, so call 956-216-5970. The Tony Butler course guide and our Tony Butler golf course post have more.

Treasure Hills Golf Club

Treasure Hills, at 3009 N Augusta National Dr, is the longer test in town: par 72 and 6,960 yards from the Blue tees with a 74.8 rating, though some sources give 6,788, so check the card. One listing credits Robert Trent Jones Sr. as designer, which we could not verify. It is a housing-lined course on the east side of Harlingen.

The owner, ViRaj Golf, made upgrades and then put the 189-acre club up for sale through Fairways Advisors; the sale listing said the club would keep operating. Tee times are sold on GolfNow and TeeOff. The only price we found is about $40, quoted by Tony Butler's general manager when comparing rates. See the Treasure Hills course guide and Treasure Hills golf.

Harlingen Country Club

Harlingen Country Club in Palm Valley is private, managed by Mosaic Clubs since 2017, with about 440 members in one undated report. Play is with a member. It has a driving range, short-game area and putting green. If your home club has reciprocal arrangements, ask your pro to call; the club's policy was not published.

The small Harlingen nines

Three short courses appear on the Visit Harlingen list and in directories, but we found no recent activity:

  • Cottonwood XXI Country Club, 1001 S Ed Carey Dr: listed as a nine-hole par 3.
  • Stuart Place Country Club, 111 Stuart Place Rd: listed as nine holes, 2,742 yards, par 36.
  • Sunshine Country Club Estates: a nine-hole par 3 in a residential and RV community, members and guests only per listings.

For all three: status unclear, call first.

The San Benito side

San Benito, just south of Harlingen on I-69E, has no course we could confirm. Its draw for golfers is Fun-N-Sun RV Resort, a very large 55+ Encore park with mini golf only. On our estimates it is 11 minutes from Tony Butler, 14 from Treasure Hills and 15 from Rancho Viejo. Rates were not posted online, recent reviews are mixed, and it offers furnished cottages on three-month rentals.

From San Benito or Harlingen, the two Rancho Viejo courses are the obvious add-on. El Diablo is the tight, watery one, and El Angel is the shorter par 70. Confirm visitor access by phone. Our Rancho Viejo golf and Brownsville golf courses guides cover the south end.

Where to stay for the Harlingen golf courses

The Hampton Inn & Suites Harlingen on Ed Carey Drive sits between both public courses, about 8 minutes from each, with free breakfast, free parking, guest laundry and a fridge and microwave in every room. A Sunday night in early November 2026 was from $97 for a king; two-queen rooms were priced well above that on the sample date.

For a winter stay, Llano Grande Resort in Mercedes is 26 minutes from Tony Butler and has its own 18, with RV sites from $795 a month plus electric (seen October 2026). See where to stay in the Rio Grande Valley for winter.

A week on the Harlingen golf courses

With only two public courses in town, a Harlingen golf week works best as a triangle: Tony Butler, Treasure Hills and Rancho Viejo, all within about 25 minutes of each other. A sample five rounds:

  1. Tony Butler's 18, after checking whether the nine is open.
  2. Treasure Hills, booked on GolfNow or TeeOff.
  3. El Angel at Rancho Viejo (16 minutes from the Hampton Inn).
  4. Tony Butler's nine plus range time, as a short day.
  5. El Diablo, if your group wants the hardest round on the east side.

Add Tierra Santa in Weslaco, 36 minutes west of the Hampton Inn on our estimate, for a sixth course. South Padre Island Golf Club in Laguna Vista is also 36 minutes from the Hampton Inn, so the coastal round works from a Harlingen base too.

Off the map to the north, Raymondville, about 25 minutes up US-77, has a nine-hole city course that the city has talked about reviving. Status unclear, call first.

Getting to Harlingen

Valley International Airport (HRL) is in Harlingen. It has Southwest to Austin, Dallas Love and Houston Hobby, American Eagle to Dallas/Fort Worth with seasonal Chicago O'Hare from December 19, 2026, United Express to Houston, and seasonal Minneapolis/St. Paul on Delta and Sun Country. For Winter Texans from the upper Midwest, it is often the easiest arrival. Our flights to McAllen guide compares all three Valley airports.

The Harlingen side is a little wetter than McAllen in winter, with more drizzle and fog when fronts come through, and a cooling sea breeze in spring. For a non-golf morning, Jackson Street Market Days runs in downtown Harlingen on the first Saturday of each month, 9 AM to 3 PM.

For every course in the Valley, see Rio Grande Valley golf courses.

Plan it on the map

Open the Rio Grande Valley golf map to see the Harlingen golf courses, Rancho Viejo and the San Benito parks with drive times between them. The $30 plan can build a short trip from a Harlingen base, or a whole winter stay with a weekly rotation across Tony Butler, Treasure Hills and Rancho Viejo.
