Brownsville golf courses come to four playable 18s: Brownsville Golf Center, the city course; River Bend on the Rio Grande; and El Diablo and El Angel at Rancho Viejo, just north of town. Most fees are not posted, so call. Valley International Country Club's status is unclear since a 2017 fire, and Fort Brown Memorial is closed.
Brownsville is the far southeast corner of the Valley, about 70 minutes from McAllen but 11 minutes from Rancho Viejo and 34 minutes from the Laguna Vista course on our estimates from a Brownsville hotel. That makes it a sensible base if you want the Valley's best resort golf and the coast in the same trip. The fees below are undated listings unless marked.
Quick facts
- Playable courses: Brownsville Golf Center, River Bend, El Diablo and El Angel.

Brownsville Golf Center
The city's course at 1800 W San Marcelo Blvd opened in 1971: a flat 18, par 70, 6,144 yards from the back, with ponds and bermuda greens. It has a putting green but no driving range. In 2026 the city has been renovating it in phases while it stays in use: resurfaced tees, rebuilt greens, fairway soil treatment and turf, and pond drainage, at a cost KRGV put at $42,000. No end date was published.
There is no posted rate card. The city says its rates are often the lowest in every season, and TeeOff lists tee times. Treat it as a cheap regular round, and call 956-541-2582 for prices. The Brownsville Golf Center course guide has the layout.
River Bend Resort & Golf Club
River Bend is a public course with memberships in an RV-lot community on the Rio Grande, west of town at 4541 US Military Hwy 281. Mature oaks line it, and the club says its greens are quick. The pro shop opens daily from 7 AM to 7 PM, daylight permitting, and a new cart fleet was due in October 2026. Tee times go through the River Bend app and Chronogolf.
For Winter Texans, the appeal is the memberships, which were clearly priced in October 2026:
| River Bend membership | Monthly fee | Plus |
|---|---|---|
| Seasonal (3 months), individual | $200 | $100 trail or $150 cart per month |
| Seasonal (3 months), family | $300 | $225 trail or $300 cart per month |
| Annual, individual | $150 | $75 trail or $100 cart per month |
| Annual, family | $275 | Trail or cart fee extra |
| Driving range | $40 |
The only daily green fee we found is $38 (undated); a 2023 review cites $35-$49 with a cart. The course is close to the border wall and levee, so expect Border Patrol presence. See the River Bend course guide and River Bend golf.
Rancho Viejo: El Diablo and El Angel
Rancho Viejo has two 1971 Dennis Arp courses that share a clubhouse. El Diablo is tight and tree-lined with water on about half the holes, ten doglegs and big undulating greens, the harder of the two. El Angel is links-style with mounding, shorter at par 70 and kinder to seniors, with a 114 slope from the Blue tees (5,900 yards). One listing says only 27 of the 36 holes are open to members and guests, so ask what is in play.
Rates are not posted. The El Angel course guide has the tee chart, and our Rancho Viejo golf guide covers stay-and-play.
Closed and unclear
Valley International Country Club, 301 McFadden Dr, was a 27-hole club. A clubhouse fire on May 13, 2017 largely stopped the business, and the last news we found, from 2018, spoke of a slow rebuild. Booking sites still list it with no tee times. Status unclear, call first. Our Valley International Country Club post has the history.
Fort Brown Memorial, beside the river levee, closed around 2015 after the border fence cut the course off, according to 2016 reporting. See closed golf courses in the Rio Grande Valley.
Where to stay
- Rancho Viejo Resort: 22 villas next to the pro shop on El Diablo. No dated rate was online; an undated listing showed $114-$199 a night, with a $10 nightly resort fee covering breakfast and parking. Book by phone and confirm guest tee times.
- Courtyard Brownsville: 6 minutes from the city course and 11 from Rancho Viejo, from $98 on a Saturday night seen for October 31, 2026. Breakfast is likely extra.
- River Bend RV lots: a quiet, gated 55+ park on the course. User-reported nightly rates were $45-$55; call 956-336-0905.
A week on the Brownsville golf courses
The four Brownsville golf courses sit within about 20 minutes of each other, so a week from one base is easy. A sample:
- El Angel at Rancho Viejo to start, from the Blue tees.
- Brownsville Golf Center, a quick, cheap city round.
- River Bend in the morning, then lunch at the club restaurant.
- A coastal day: South Padre Island Golf Club at twilight.
- El Diablo, once you know how the wind is blowing.
On the east side, the wind and drizzle that come with fronts matter more than on the McAllen side, so keep a spare day in the plan.
Between rounds
The Brownsville area has some good non-golf stops for a short day or a wet morning:
- Palo Alto Battlefield National Historical Park: the site of the first battle of the US-Mexican War, May 8, 1846, with a visitor center and short trail. Free.
- Gladys Porter Zoo: a 26-acre zoo in central Brownsville, partly indoors, so it works in drizzle.
- Children's Museum of Brownsville: next to the zoo in Dean Porter Park, for visiting grandkids.
- Resaca de la Palma State Park: near River Bend, for birding.
Brownsville faces Matamoros across the river. The US State Department rates Tamaulipas Level 4, and Matamoros is outside the narrow Nuevo Progreso exception, so read the current advisory before any crossing.
Weather and timing
Brownsville's winter is almost the same as McAllen's: NOAA normals give January highs of 72.6F and lows of 53.1F. It is wetter, though, with about 26.8 inches a year against McAllen's 22.2, and 3.8 inches in October, so fronts bring more drizzle and fog here. In summer the sea breeze keeps afternoons 2-4F cooler than McAllen. Charro Days, Brownsville's late-February fiesta, fills hotels that weekend.
Getting there
Brownsville/South Padre Island International (BRO) has American Eagle to Dallas/Fort Worth, United Express to Houston, Breeze to Orlando and Aerus to Monterrey. Harlingen (HRL), farther north, has more flights, including Southwest. See flights to McAllen.
From Brownsville, South Padre Island Golf Club at Laguna Vista is 34 minutes from the Courtyard, so a coastal round fits easily. See South Padre Island golf, and for the courses just north, Harlingen golf courses.
Plan it on the map
Open the Rio Grande Valley golf map to see all the Brownsville golf courses, Rancho Viejo and Laguna Vista with drive times between them. The $30 plan can build a south-end trip around the Rancho Viejo pair, or a winter stay with a weekly rotation from a River Bend or Rancho Viejo base.

Questions golfers ask
How many golf courses are in Brownsville?
Brownsville has two public 18s we could confirm open: Brownsville Golf Center, the city course, and River Bend on the Rio Grande. Rancho Viejo, just north, adds two more 18s. Valley International Country Club has an unclear status, and Fort Brown Memorial is closed.
How much is golf at Brownsville Golf Center?
The city publishes no rates and says they are often the lowest in every season. Call the course at 956-541-2582 for current prices. It was being renovated in phases during 2026 while staying open.
Is Valley International Country Club open?
We could not confirm it. A clubhouse fire on May 13, 2017 largely stopped the business, and a 2018 report of a possible reopening was the last news found. Booking sites still list it with no tee times. Status unclear, call first.
What happened to Fort Brown Memorial Golf Course?
It closed around 2015. Reporting from 2016 said the operator shut it after the border fence cut the course off and he was pushed into bankruptcy. GolfPass lists it as closed.
Can I stay at River Bend for the winter?
Yes. River Bend has RV lots on site, and some back onto the course. Call the RV office at 956-336-0905; no online rate card was posted. Its 3-month golf membership was $200 a month for an individual plus trail or cart fees in October 2026.
Can the public play Rancho Viejo?
Resort guests and Winter Texan members can, and GolfNow and TeeOff list public times. One directory calls it private, and the club made its range bay members-only in January 2026, so confirm access by phone at 956-350-4000.
Which airport is closest to Brownsville golf?
Brownsville/South Padre Island International (BRO), with American Eagle to Dallas/Fort Worth, United Express to Houston, Breeze to Orlando and Aerus to Monterrey. Harlingen (HRL) is an alternative with more flights.
