Valley International Country Club in Brownsville has an unclear status: call first before you plan a round. A clubhouse fire on May 13, 2017 largely stopped the business, a 2018 report spoke of a slow rebuild, and we found no later news. Booking sites still list it but showed no tee times in October 2026, and access listings conflict.
This post sets out exactly what the research found, what is not known, and the Brownsville courses that are confirmed open for a winter or a trip. Because its status is not confirmed, Valley International is not on our map.

The honest summary is that nobody in our sources confirms the course is open to visitors in 2026. A booking-site listing alone does not show that the course is open. Before you drive over, call both numbers and ask three things: is the course open, can non-members play, and what does a round cost.
What the listings describe
The club opened in 1961, with a 1975 redesign credited to Ed Ault in listings. It is described as 27 holes: an 18-hole course plus a 9-hole par 3, in the Los Ebanos neighbourhood of east Brownsville. The listed back tees are the Orange set at 6,538 yards, par 70, with a 72.3 rating and 125 slope. None of this tells you the course is playable today.
Not the airport
Valley International Airport (HRL) is in Harlingen, about 50 minutes from McAllen. It shares the name but nothing else, so check which one a search result means.
How to check before you go
- Call both listed numbers, 956-548-9199 and 956-546-5331, a few days before you want to play.
- Ask whether visitors can play, since one listing calls the club private.
- Ask about the clubhouse: whether there is a pro shop, carts and somewhere to pay.
- Ask which holes are open, the 18, the par-3 nine or both.
- Have a backup tee time at one of the open courses below, so a wasted drive does not cost you the day.
If you learn that the course is open to visitors, treat it as a bonus round rather than the centre of a plan until it is confirmed over more than one call. It stays off our map until its status is confirmed.
A Brownsville golf week without Valley International
You do not need Valley International to fill a week on the east side. A five-round week from a Brownsville base could be El Diablo, El Angel, River Bend, Brownsville Golf Center and one trip to Harlingen or Laguna Vista. Tony Butler, the Harlingen city course, is about 29 minutes from the Courtyard on our routed estimate, and South Padre Island Golf Club about 34 minutes.
Where to play in Brownsville instead
Four courses at three clubs near Brownsville are confirmed open in our research. Routed drive times are from the Courtyard by Marriott Brownsville, which is about a mile from Valley International:
| Course | Status | Drive from Courtyard | Fees seen | Notes |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Brownsville Golf Center | Open; phased renovation in 2026 | 6 min | not published | City course, par 70, 6,144 yds, no range |
| Rancho Viejo El Diablo | Open | 11 min | $37-$45 (undated listings) | Resort course, 6,847 yds, 129 slope |
| Rancho Viejo El Angel | Open | 11 min | $40 (undated listing) | Par 70, 6,301 yds, 120 slope |
| River Bend | Open | 13 min | $38 (undated listing) | Riverside public course with RV lots |
Brownsville Golf Center
The city's municipal course is the closest replacement for a cheap regular round. It opened in 1971 and is par 70 at 6,144 yards. A city notice in March 2026 and KRGV in February 2026 described an in-house renovation of tees, greens, fairways and ponds while the course stays in use; KRGV put the cost at $42,000. There is a putting green but no driving range. Rates are not published, though the city says its rates are often the lowest in every season. TeeOff takes bookings, and 956-541-2582 is the listed number. See the Brownsville Golf Center course guide.
Rancho Viejo
Rancho Viejo has two 1971 Dennis W. Arp 18s and villas on the El Diablo course. Resort guests, members and Winter Texan members play, and public times are listed, but rates are by phone (956-350-4000). El Diablo is the harder course, with water on about half the holes. See the El Diablo course guide and our full Rancho Viejo golf guide.
River Bend
River Bend is a public course along the Rio Grande west of Brownsville, lined with mature oaks, with its own RV lots. Tee times are booked through the River Bend app and Chronogolf, and the pro shop (956-548-0192) is open daily 7 AM to 7 PM. See the River Bend course guide and our River Bend golf Brownsville guide.
Other Brownsville courses you may see listed
- Fort Brown Memorial Golf Course is closed. It shut around 2015 after the border fence cut the course off, and GolfPass lists it as closed for business.
- Valley International Country Club, this one: status unclear, call first.

Where to stay in Brownsville for golf
The Courtyard by Marriott Brownsville is the hotel closest to Valley International, Brownsville Golf Center and Rancho Viejo. Kayak showed weekend rooms from $98 for October 31, 2026 (seen October 2026; rates change), and it lists a free airport shuttle; breakfast is likely extra, and guests report the lot floods in heavy rain.
For a stay on a course, the Rancho Viejo Resort villas sit on El Diablo, with a $10 nightly resort fee covering breakfast on Kayak. For a winter in an RV, River Bend Resort has lots beside its own course and a 3-month golf membership at $200 a month for an individual, plus trail or cart fees. Our where to stay in the Rio Grande Valley in winter guide compares Brownsville with other bases.
Brownsville weather and timing
Brownsville's NOAA normals are almost identical to McAllen's in winter: January averages about 72.6F highs and 53.1F lows. It is wetter, though, with about 26.8 inches a year against 22.2 at McAllen, 5.7 inches in September and 3.8 in October. Expect more drizzle and fog when cold fronts pass in winter. Charro Days in late February makes Brownsville hotels busier. Hurricane season runs June 1 to November 30.
Brownsville/South Padre Island International (BRO) is the closest airport, with American Eagle to Dallas/Fort Worth and United Express to Houston among its routes. See flights to McAllen to compare the three Valley airports.
