Rancho Viejo golf means two 18-hole Dennis W. Arp courses from 1971, El Diablo and El Angel, at a resort just north of Brownsville. El Diablo is the long, watery test; El Angel is a shorter par 70. Resort guests, members and Winter Texan members play, public tee times are listed, and rates are by phone.
Rancho Viejo is the only place in the Valley where you can sleep in a villa on a fairway and walk to the first tee. That makes it the natural pick for a stay-and-play, and a strong east-side base for a winter. The catch is that very little is published online: no rate sheet, no booking window and no official golf website in our research. This guide sets out what is known as of October 2026 and what to ask on the phone.

Rancho Viejo golf courses compared
Rancho Viejo golf is a two-course setup with one clubhouse and pro shop, so you can play both in a stay without moving the car.

| Character | Tight, tree- and home-lined, water on about half the holes, ten doglegs, big undulating greens | Easier, links-style, with mounding, water and bunkers |
Ratings and slopes come from GolfPass. Its tee table shows El Diablo as par 70 for men, which conflicts with its own scorecard total of 72; we use 72.
El Diablo
El Diablo is the harder of the pair and, on our reading, the best test near Brownsville. From the Gold tees it is 6,847 yards with a 129 slope. The Blue tees, at 6,315 yards and 122 slope, are the sensible set for most visiting golfers. Water comes into play on about half the holes, and with ten doglegs and homes and trees along the fairways, it rewards position over power. The greens are big and undulating, so lag putting matters. The El Diablo course guide has the hole-by-hole layout.
El Angel
El Angel is the friendlier course. At par 70 and 6,301 yards from the Gold tees (120 slope), and 5,900 yards from the Blues (114 slope), it suits seniors, mixed groups and a second round on a two-round day. It is links-style with mounding rather than tree-lined. See the El Angel course guide for the layout.
Who can play Rancho Viejo golf
Access is the part to confirm. The research picture as of October 2026:
- Rancho Viejo is a resort club with members.
- Resort guests can play, along with Winter Texan weekly and monthly members.
- GolfNow and TeeOff list both courses, which points to public tee times.
- One directory (GolfN) lists the club as private.
- In January 2026 the club made its Total Golf range and tech bay members-only, according to KRGV.
- One listing says only 27 of the 36 holes are open to members and guests.
The safe reading is that outside play is available but the club is leaning toward members. If you are not staying at the resort, call before you drive, ask whether both 18s are in play, and ask what range access you get. The dress code on one listing: collared shirts, no cutoffs, denim allowed and soft spikes.
Rancho Viejo stay-and-play
The resort's hotel is a set of Southwestern-style villas next to the pro shop, on the El Diablo course and the Resaca del Rancho Viejo. Each villa has a central suite with a kitchen and living area, plus bedrooms with two double beds and their own entrances, so a foursome can share one villa. Listings disagree on the size: the resort says 22 villas, and booking sites list 49 or 54 rooms.
What we found on cost and terms:
- No dated room rate was published as of October 2026. The resort website has no booking engine, so call for a rate.
- Kayak lists a $10 nightly resort fee covering breakfast, pool, fitness, self-parking and in-room coffee.
- There is a lagoon-style pool.
- Some reviews mention maintenance problems in rooms.
- WinterTexanInfo mentions winter golf packages and winter golf schools at the resort, with no prices.
When you call, ask for the room and the golf together: the rate per night, whether green fees or carts are bundled, guest tee-time priority, which course the package covers, and the cancellation terms. Our where to stay in the Rio Grande Valley in winter guide compares Rancho Viejo with other bases.
Rancho Viejo as a winter base
For Winter Texans who want the east side of the Valley and regular Rancho Viejo golf, the resort puts seven courses that take outside play within about 30 minutes on our routed estimates:
| From Rancho Viejo Resort | Drive (min) | Miles |
|---|---|---|
| El Diablo and El Angel | 0 | 0 |
| Brownsville Golf Center | 14 | 8.0 |
| River Bend | 18 | 10.8 |
| Tony Butler (Harlingen) | 21 | 15.0 |
| Treasure Hills (Harlingen) | 24 | 16.3 |
| South Padre Island Golf Club (Laguna Vista) | 27 | 20.0 |
A weekly rotation from here could be one round on El Diablo, one on El Angel, a cheap city round at Brownsville Golf Center, River Bend and a day at Laguna Vista. The River Bend course guide covers the riverside course, which also has its own RV lots. For a whole season, ask the pro shop about the weekly and monthly Winter Texan memberships mentioned by WinterTexanInfo, since no prices are posted. Our winter Texan golf guide explains how a season usually works.
If the villas do not suit, the Courtyard by Marriott Brownsville is about 11 minutes from the courses, and the Fun-N-Sun RV Resort in San Benito is about 15 minutes on our estimates. Valley International Country Club in Brownsville is often listed nearby, but its status is unclear, so call first.
When to play Rancho Viejo
The Brownsville station's NOAA normals are a fair guide for Rancho Viejo. Winter is mild: January averages about 72.6F highs and 53.1F lows, February about 76.2F and 56.9F, and March about 80.6F and 62.0F. November, at about 80.3F and 60.8F, is one of the best golf months, and hurricane season ends November 30.
The Brownsville side is a little wetter than McAllen, with about 7.0 rain days in January against 6.1, and more drizzle and fog when cold fronts pass. Wind builds into spring, averaging about 11.8 mph in March and 12.4 mph in April. Peak Winter Texan season runs roughly November to March, and morning tee times are hardest to get from January to mid-March. Charro Days in Brownsville in late February makes local hotels busier. Our guide to the best time to golf in the Rio Grande Valley has the month-by-month detail.
Getting to Rancho Viejo
Brownsville/South Padre Island International (BRO) is the airport best placed for Rancho Viejo, with American Eagle to Dallas/Fort Worth and United Express to Houston among its routes. Valley International in Harlingen (HRL) has Southwest and winter nonstops from Minneapolis and, from December 19, 2026, Chicago O'Hare. Our guide to flights to McAllen and the Valley compares the three airports.
Rancho Viejo golf vs the other east-side courses
Rancho Viejo is the strongest golf on the east side, but not the cheapest or the easiest to book. If price matters most, the city courses in Brownsville and Harlingen are the regulars for Winter Texans; see our Brownsville golf courses and Harlingen golf courses guides. If you want the coast, South Padre Island Golf Club is about 27 minutes away. For how fees compare across the Valley, see Rio Grande Valley golf rates.
Plan it on the map
Open the Rio Grande Valley golf map to see El Diablo, El Angel, the villas and the nearby courses with drive times between them. The $30 plan can build a short Rancho Viejo stay-and-play, or a whole winter on the east side with a weekly course rotation.
