Cover: The best golf courses in the Rio Grande Valley, ranked with the trade-offs

The best golf courses in the Rio Grande Valley are Tierra Santa in Weslaco, El Diablo at Rancho Viejo and Los Lagos in Edinburg, with Monte Cristo and South Padre Island Golf Club close behind. Each has a catch: Los Lagos has poor recent reviews, Rancho Viejo needs a call to confirm access, and the coastal course costs the most.

This ranking of the best golf courses in the Rio Grande Valley is a short list for golfers who want the better rounds on a trip or the occasional treat during a winter of city-course golf. It ranks the layouts a visitor can book, and says plainly what holds each one back. Fees were seen in October 2026, some are undated, and all can change.

Quick facts

  • Top pick: Tierra Santa, Weslaco, 7,139 yards, 73.6 / 124.
  • Best test: El Diablo at Rancho Viejo, 129 slope with water on about half the holes.
  • Longest: Los Lagos, 7,188 yards, 74.2 / 132.
  • Best-reviewed by players: Monte Cristo, GolfPass 4.3 from 355 reviews (call to confirm access).
  • Coastal round: South Padre Island Golf Club, $69-$79 with cart.
  • Not ranked: private McAllen and Harlingen country clubs.

The ranking weighs the layout, what players report and the price. Where a course has no published rating or recent reviews, we say so rather than guess.

1. Tierra Santa, Weslaco

Tierra Santa is a modern 1997 layout through a housing community by Jeff Brauer with Steve Elkington. It plays 7,139 yards from the Black tees, but the Blue (6,601, 70.8 / 119) and White (6,045, 68.2 / 110) sets make it playable for most. It was the best-rated public course in the mid-Valley on GolfPass, and GolfNow times started at $24 when we checked. A reviewer reported $35 twilight from 3 PM with a cart and unlimited play (undated).

The trade-off is pace. On busy winter days, reviewers say rounds drag. An August 2026 review also mentioned waterlogged paths. The Tierra Santa course guide has the hole-by-hole layout. It is about 30 minutes from downtown McAllen.

2. El Diablo at Rancho Viejo

El Diablo is the tougher of Rancho Viejo's two 1971 Dennis Arp courses: tight, lined with trees and homes, with water on about half the holes, ten doglegs and big undulating greens. From the Gold tees it is 6,847 yards at 73.7 / 129, and the Blue tees (6,315, 71.2 / 122) are the sensible choice for most.

The catch is access and information. The club has resort guests, members and Winter Texan programs, and listings sell public times, but no current rate sheet is online and one directory calls it private. In January 2026 the club made its range and tech bay members-only. Call first. Staying at Rancho Viejo Resort, whose villas sit on El Diablo, is the most direct way in. The El Diablo course guide covers the layout.

3. Los Lagos, Edinburg

On paper Los Lagos is the strongest public course on the west side: a 2001 Robert von Hagge design, links-style, with 11 acres of lakes, water on 11-12 holes and more than 75 bunkers. The par-3 14th plays 130-160 yards over water. From the Black tees it is 7,188 yards, 74.2 / 132, the longest public course in the Valley.

Recent reviews are the problem: GolfPass players rated it 1.9 out of 5 from 72 reviews, citing conditions, pace and cart availability. The city picked Troon in September 2026 to run it, which could change things, and rates may change with it. No current rate card was found; one reviewer cited a $26 twilight rate with a cart.

4. Monte Cristo, Edinburg

Monte Cristo is 18 holes around seven lakes in a 55+ community north of Edinburg, opened in 1976. Players like it: GolfPass shows 4.3 from 355 reviews, with play dates into June 2026. It is 6,392 yards from the Gold tees (70.2 / 122). A January 2026 reviewer paid a $100 annual membership and then under $14 for 18 with a cart on promotional rates, but that is one report, not a posted price. A February 2026 reviewer noted dry conditions from drought. Sources disagree on whether it is public, so call ahead. The Monte Cristo course guide has more.

5. South Padre Island Golf Club, Laguna Vista

The only course near the island, on the mainland facing the Laguna Madre. It is 6,931 yards from the back and exposed to coastal wind, which usually builds in the afternoon. Rack rates were $69 Monday to Thursday and $79 Friday to Sunday before 2 PM, cart included, plus 7.75% tax. Twilight is $50 Monday to Thursday from 2 PM and $55 Friday to Sunday from 1 PM. GolfNow Hot Deals in mid-October 2026 ran about $42-$72, prepaid.

6 to 10: the solid regulars

Champion Lakes is McAllen's central city course, rebuilt in 1999, with lakes, a lit range and the clearest rate card. It is solid rather than special, and about thirty Winter Texan leagues play there.

Tierra del Sol in Pharr is a flat 1982 municipal 18 at 6,827 yards, ranked here for value: $41 with a cart and an $800 three-month package (one round a day with a cart).

Treasure Hills is Harlingen's longer public 18 at 6,960 yards. Sources disagree on the back-tee length, and with the club on the sale market, check conditions first.

El Angel is Rancho Viejo's friendlier par 70, 6,301 yards from the Gold tees at a 120 slope. It is a good choice for seniors and mixed groups.

Shary in Mission is short and flat at 6,025 yards, but its night golf, with tee times until 11 PM, earns it a place.

Best by golfer type

The best golf courses in the Rio Grande Valley are not the same for everyone. A few pointers from the tee data:

  • Low handicaps: Los Lagos from the Black tees (132 slope) and El Diablo from the Gold (129) are the two biggest tests. Tierra Santa from the Black (124) plays long at 7,139 yards.
  • Mid handicaps: Tierra Santa's Blue tees (6,601, 119 slope), El Diablo's Blue (6,315, 122) and Monte Cristo's Gold (6,392, 122) are about right.
  • Seniors and higher handicaps: El Angel's Blue tees (5,900, 114 slope), Tierra Santa's White (6,045, 110) or Monte Cristo's Blue (6,014, 119).
  • Couples: Champion Lakes' afternoon couples rate, $30 for two with a cart from 4 PM standard time, is the cheapest shared round we found.
  • Late risers: Shary's last tee time is 11 PM under the lights.

Women's ratings were not published for most of these courses, so check the card at the pro shop.

What we left out

Two strong-looking clubs are not on this list because visitors cannot book them: McAllen Country Club, which hosted the Texas Senior Amateur in 2025, and Harlingen Country Club. Both are private. Cimarron in Mission has been closed since August 2022; new owners bought it in 2026 and plan to reopen it as a private club, with no date set. Valley International Country Club in Brownsville has had an unclear status since a 2017 clubhouse fire: call first.

Questions golfers ask

What is the best golf course in the Rio Grande Valley?

Our pick is Tierra Santa in Weslaco, a 1997 Jeff Brauer and Steve Elkington design at 7,139 yards. It was the best-rated public course in the mid-Valley on GolfPass (4.5 from 105 reviews) and GolfNow times started at $24 in October 2026.

What is the hardest course in the Valley?

Los Lagos in Edinburg is the longest public course at 7,188 yards with a 74.2 rating and 132 slope. El Diablo at Rancho Viejo is narrower, with water on about half the holes and a 129 slope from 6,847 yards.

Is Los Lagos in good condition?

Recent reviews say no. GolfPass reviewers gave it 1.9 out of 5 from 72 reviews, citing conditions, pace and carts, while rating the layout better. Troon was selected in September 2026 to take over operations, so check the latest reviews before you book.

Is South Padre Island Golf Club worth the price?

It is the only course near the island and the most expensive on our list, at $69 Monday to Thursday and $79 Friday to Sunday with a cart before 2 PM. Twilight from $50 is the better buy. Play it for the coastal setting, not the value.

Can visitors play Rancho Viejo?

Resort guests and Winter Texan members can play, and GolfNow and TeeOff listings sell public times. One directory lists the club as private, so confirm outside access by phone before you plan around it.

Are the private clubs better than the public courses?

We have not ranked them because visitors cannot book them. McAllen Country Club and Harlingen Country Club are private and need a member or a reciprocal arrangement.

Which top course is best value?

Tierra Santa from $24 on GolfNow is the best value among the stronger layouts. For daily golf over a season, Tierra del Sol's $800 three-month package with a cart is the clearest deal we found.
