Cheap golf in the Rio Grande Valley is easy to find if you play the city courses and the afternoon rates. Shary in Mission is $21 to walk 18, Champion Lakes in McAllen charges $30 for two with a cart after 4 PM, and Tierra del Sol in Pharr has a $28 twilight with a cart. A season package can bring daily golf under $10 a round.
The Valley is already one of the cheaper winter golf regions, but prices vary more than you might expect between courses 15 minutes apart. This guide ranks the lowest published fees, the twilight windows and the packages that pay off for a longer stay. Every price was seen in October 2026 unless marked otherwise. Rates change, so confirm before you drive out.

Twilight: the easiest cheap golf in the Rio Grande Valley
Most of the value is after lunch. Winter Texan leagues fill the morning sheets from January to mid-March, so the afternoon is both cheaper and easier to book.
- Tierra del Sol: $28 with a cart from 2 PM (3 PM during daylight time), and a $20 replay with a cart.
- Champion Lakes: $37 with a cart from 2 PM (3 PM in daylight time). From 4 PM standard time (5:30 PM in daylight time) couples pay $30 for two and families $25, cart included. That is about the cheapest golf in the Valley.
- Tierra Santa: a reviewer reported $35 from 3 PM with a cart and unlimited play (undated).
- South Padre Island Golf Club: $50 Monday to Thursday from 2 PM and $55 Friday to Sunday from 1 PM, cart included, plus 7.75% tax. Nine holes are $40 from 3 PM on Friday to Sunday.
Watch the clock change. The Valley switches to standard time on November 1, 2026, which pulls the twilight start at Tierra del Sol and Champion Lakes back to 2 PM for the winter, but winter days are short, so ask for the last tee time before booking a 4 PM couples round.
Night golf at Shary
Shary is lit for night golf with a last tee time of 11 PM, and the range is open 7 AM to midnight. At $21 to walk, it is the cheapest way to play when the day sheets are full.
Packages that cut the cost per round
For anyone staying a month or more, a package beats daily fees.
| Package | Price (seen Oct 2026) | Cost per round |
|---|---|---|
| Tierra del Sol 3-month single, a round a day with cart | $800 | About $9 if you play every day for 90 days |
| Tierra del Sol 10 x 18 punch card with cart | $340 | $34 |
| Shary 20-round 18-hole card | About $400 | About $20 walking |
| Champion Lakes 20-round Smart Card | $561 | About $28 walking |
| Monte Cristo annual membership | $100, then under $14 for 18 with cart (one Jan 2026 review) | Under $14 |
Tierra del Sol's 1-month package ($350 with a cart) is sold only April to December, so in peak season the 3-month plan is the one to buy. At Monte Cristo, the $100 membership comes from one reviewer, not a posted rate, so ask whether it is still offered. Our Rio Grande Valley golf passes guide covers all of these in detail.
Cheap golf by area
Where you stay changes which bargains are practical. Drive times are our routed estimates from downtown McAllen.
- McAllen, Mission and Pharr. The cheapest cluster in the Valley: Champion Lakes (7 minutes), Shary (13) and Tierra del Sol (14) are all city courses with published rates. A west-side base lets you play the 4 PM couples rate at Champion Lakes one day and walk Shary for $21 the next.
- Edinburg. Los Lagos (17 minutes) is the longest public layout on the west side at 7,188 yards, and a reviewer cites a $26 twilight with a cart, but recent reviews on conditions are poor and Troon takes over management from late 2026, so rates may change. Ebony Hills is a cheap nine, though it has no current rate card.
- Mid-Valley. Tierra Santa (30 minutes) from $24 online and Llano Grande (32 minutes) from $18.99 are the value pair. Tierra Santa is the better course; Llano Grande draws complaints about bare fairways.
- Harlingen and Brownsville. Tony Butler (44 minutes) and Brownsville Golf Center (69 minutes) are the city courses, but neither has a current published rate.
- South Padre. The island's only nearby course, South Padre Island Golf Club, is the most expensive public option, so the twilight and Hot Deal rates are the way to play it cheaply.
Online deals and what to watch
GolfNow resells times at several Valley courses. South Padre Island Golf Club Hot Deals ran about $42 to $72 in mid-October 2026 against a rack rate of $69 Monday to Thursday and $79 Friday to Sunday. Tierra Santa, the best-reviewed public course in the mid-Valley, showed times from $24. Hot Deals are prepaid and refundable only with 24 hours' notice, and South Padre charges a no-show fee for the full reservation.
Cheap golf on the east side
The Harlingen and Brownsville end has fewer published rates. Tony Butler, Harlingen's 27-hole city course, was $36 with a cart in a news report whose year is not shown. Brownsville Golf Center posts no rates, but the city says they are often the lowest in every season. Call both before you plan around a price.
Small savings for cheap golf in the Rio Grande Valley
- Walk at the city courses. A cart at Champion Lakes is $14 per person, and at Shary $25 per cart for 18.
- Bring your own cart. Trail fees are $8 a round at Champion Lakes, $11 a day at Shary and $100 a month at Tierra del Sol.
- Play nine. Champion Lakes is $21.50 for 9 and Shary $16.
- Practice cheaply. Tierra del Sol range buckets are $5 small and $10 large.
- Play in April. The winter crowd leaves after Easter (March 28, 2027) and many courses drop to summer rates.
The Shary course guide, Tierra del Sol course guide and Champion Lakes course guide have the full cards for the three cheapest city courses.
