Rio Grande Valley tee times are booked course by course: Champion Lakes on the City of McAllen's Club Prophet system, Tierra del Sol online, the Edinburg courses on Teesnap and Shary by phone. No course publishes a booking window. The real challenge is winter mornings from January to mid-March, when Winter Texan leagues fill the sheets.
This guide lists how each public course takes bookings, then the tactics for getting the morning times that matter in peak season. Booking details were checked in October 2026 and systems change, so confirm with the pro shop.

When Rio Grande Valley tee times are hardest to get
The Winter Texan season runs roughly November to March. Tee sheets start filling by Thanksgiving week (November 26, 2026), holiday weeks are busy, and from January to mid-March the morning times are the hardest to get anywhere in the Valley. December has its own squeeze: short days compress the tee sheets. Departures pick up from mid-March and after Easter (March 28, 2027), and in April tee times open up.
Some courses carry more winter traffic than others. Champion Lakes has its league load. Tony Butler gets about 40,000 rounds a year, much of it from Winter Texans, per its general manager in an undated news report. Ebony Hills is described by the city as one of the most popular courses with Winter Texans, and Tierra Santa reviewers say pace can drag on busy winter days.
How to get morning Rio Grande Valley tee times in winter
- Ask the window when you first call. None is published, so ask each pro shop how far ahead it opens, and set a reminder.
- Book a standing week. If you are staying a month or more, decide your course days and book them as a pattern. Our snowbird golf schedule shows a weekly rotation.
- Use a season package course. At Tierra del Sol, the 3-month package ($800 single, one round a day with a cart) gives you a home course to book every day. Our golf passes guide lists the others.
- Join a group. League players do not chase tee times. See Rio Grande Valley golf leagues.
- Mind the clock change. From November 1, 2026 the Valley is on standard time, so twilight at Champion Lakes and Tierra del Sol starts at 2 PM rather than 3 PM. January lows average about 53F, so the first tee times are also the coolest.
- Go further out. The busiest sheets are in McAllen. Monte Cristo (26 minutes from downtown) and Llano Grande (32 minutes) are alternatives, though both have caveats on access or conditions.
Afternoon and night tee times
When the mornings are gone, the Valley has more afternoon options than most winter golf towns.
- Twilight: Champion Lakes from 2 PM at $37 with a cart; Tierra del Sol from 2 PM at $28 with a cart (both 3 PM in daylight time).
- Late afternoon: Champion Lakes couples ($30 for two) and family ($25) rates with a cart from 4 PM standard time, 5:30 PM in daylight time.
- Night golf: Shary is lit, with a last tee time of 11 PM and a range open from 7 AM to midnight.
- Friday evening: Tierra del Sol runs a Friday Night 9-Hole Sundowner.
At South Padre Island Golf Club, the trade-off runs the other way. The afternoon sea breeze off the Laguna Madre usually builds, so book a morning time there if you can, even though twilight ($50 Monday to Thursday from 2 PM) is cheaper.
Booking-site rules to know
- GolfNow Hot Deals are prepaid and refundable only with at least 24 hours' notice. South Padre Island Golf Club's Hot Deals ran about $42 to $72 in mid-October 2026 against its $69 to $79 rack rate.
- No-show fees: South Padre Island Golf Club charges a no-show fee for the full reservation.
- Rancho Viejo is a member-leaning resort club. Rancho Viejo El Diablo and Rancho Viejo El Angel reportedly take Chronogolf reservations, but one listing calls the club private, so confirm outside access by phone first.
- Private clubs such as McAllen Country Club have no public tee times.
Book from where you stay
A short drive makes an early tee time easier to keep, especially on a cold January morning. Routed estimates from some of the winter bases on our map:
| Base | Closest course | Drive |
|---|---|---|
| Bentsen Grove Resort, Mission | Shary | 8 min |
| Tropic Star RV Resort, Pharr | Tierra del Sol | 7 min |
| La Quinta McAllen Convention Center | Champion Lakes | 4 min |
| Holiday Inn Express Edinburg | Ebony Hills, Los Lagos | 4 and 7 min |
| Llano Grande Resort, Mercedes | Llano Grande | 6 min |
| Hampton Inn Harlingen | Tony Butler, Treasure Hills | 8 min each |
| River Bend Resort, Brownsville | River Bend | 3 min |
If you stay on the course at Llano Grande or River Bend, you can also ask the pro shop about memberships, which change how you book. River Bend's seasonal membership is $200 a month for an individual plus a trail or cart fee; Llano Grande's prices are on request. Our guide to where to stay in the Rio Grande Valley in winter compares the bases.
Weather and tee time choice
January is the month of Valley cold fronts. A front can hold highs in the 50s for a day or two with wind and drizzle, then it warms again, so a flexible booking helps. Spring is the windy season, with average wind near 12 mph in April. Our best time to golf in the Rio Grande Valley guide and Rio Grande Valley golf in January cover the season in more detail.
The Champion Lakes course guide, Shary course guide and Tierra del Sol course guide cover the three busiest city courses. For the Arizona comparison, see our guide to Yuma tee times in winter.
Plan it on the map
Open the Rio Grande Valley golf map to see each course, how far it is from your base and its fee range. The $30 plan lays out tee times for your trip, or a weekly rotation for a whole winter stay, so you know which course to book each day.
