Rio Grande Valley golf in January means afternoons in the low 70s, mornings in the low 50s and the busiest tee sheets of the year. It is the peak Winter Texan month, so book morning times ahead and use 2 PM twilight. The one weather risk is the cold front, which can keep highs in the 50s for a day or two.
For many Winter Texans, January is the heart of the season, and for a visiting golfer it is a good month with a few rules. This guide covers the January weather, crowds, events and prices, then lays out a seven-day plan around the McAllen courses. Fees were seen in October 2026 and change, and some January 2027 event dates are not yet confirmed.
Quick facts
- Weather: 72.8F high, 52.7F low, 0.77 inches of rain over 6.1 rain days (NOAA normals, McAllen).
- Wind: about 9.5 mph average, calmer than spring.
- Crowds: the peak month for tee sheets, RV resorts and restaurants.
- Time: Central Standard Time; twilight from 2 PM at Champion Lakes and Tierra del Sol.
- Events: Texas Citrus Fiesta (Mission) all month; Winter Texan Expo (McAllen).
- Turf: bermudagrass, usually partly green, but it can go tan after a hard freeze.
January weather for golf
January is the Valley's coolest month, and it is still warm by most winter golf standards. Normals at McAllen are a 72.8F high and a 52.7F low. Brownsville is almost identical, at 72.6F and 53.1F, but wetter, with 7.0 rain days against 6.1 and 1.08 inches of rain against 0.77.
The thing to plan around is the cold front, the Valley's "blue norther". A front can hold highs in the 50s for a day or two with wind and drizzle, and then it warms again. Build a spare day into the week so a front does not cost you a round.
Turf is the other January factor. Valley courses are warm-season bermudagrass, which usually stays partly green through winter, but after a hard freeze or a run of cold fronts the fairways can go tan and semi-dormant for weeks. That is general guidance, not checked course by course. Our McAllen weather by month guide has the full year.
How busy Rio Grande Valley golf in January gets
January is the peak month for tee sheets, RV resorts and restaurants, and from January to mid-March the morning tee times are the hardest to get. Champion Lakes in McAllen is home to about thirty Winter Texan leagues, and Tony Butler in Harlingen sees about 40,000 rounds a year, much of it from Winter Texans.
Three ways to deal with it:
- Book early. No course publishes its booking window, so ask each pro shop how far ahead it opens.
- Play twilight. Champion Lakes is $37 with a cart from 2 PM, and Tierra del Sol in Pharr is $28 with a cart from 2 PM.
- Play at night. Shary in Mission is lit, with a last tee time of 11 PM.
Our Rio Grande Valley tee times guide lists how each course books.

Day 1. Start with Champion Lakes, the central city course. Morning league play is heavy, so take the 2 PM twilight.
Day 2. Tierra del Sol is a flat municipal 18, 6,827 yards from the back, with online tee times and a grill open 7 AM to 2:30 PM.
Day 3. Tierra Santa is the best-reviewed public course in the mid-Valley, a 1997 Jeff Brauer and Steve Elkington layout at 7,139 yards from the Black tees and 6,045 from the White. Pace can drag on busy winter days. See the Tierra Santa course guide.
Day 4. Leave a gap. If a front comes through, this is the day it takes. If not, Santa Ana National Wildlife Refuge in Alamo and Bentsen-Rio Grande Valley State Park in Mission are two of the Valley's best birding sites, and Santa Ana's draws include winter hawks. Our guide to things to do in the Rio Grande Valley has more.
Day 5. Los Lagos is the toughest public test on the west side: a Robert von Hagge water course, 7,188 yards with a 74.2 rating and 132 slope from the tips. Recent reviews on conditions are weak and Troon takes over management from late 2026, so read recent reviews first. The Los Lagos course guide has the layout.
Day 6. Shary is 27 flat holes and lit for night golf. Walk 18 for $21 in the evening, or use the lit range, open 7 AM to midnight.
Day 7. Drive east to Rancho Viejo El Angel, the friendlier par-70 18, or Rancho Viejo El Diablo, the harder one with water on about half the holes. Rates and outside access are not posted online, so call 956-350-4000 first.
January events in the Valley
- Texas Citrus Fiesta, Mission. A month of events with the parade on the last Saturday of January. The 2027 schedule was not published as of October 2026; if the pattern holds, the parade would be Saturday, January 30, 2027 (not confirmed). Busy in Mission on parade day, with little effect on tee sheets.
- Winter Texan Expo & Health Fair, McAllen Convention Center. The 2026 edition ran January 20-21. A third-party listing gives January 19-20, 2027, not yet confirmed by the organizer. It is free, with RV parks and vendors.
- Jackson Street Market Days, Harlingen. First Saturday of each month, 9 AM to 3 PM, which makes it January 2, 2027.
- New Year week. Family visitors on top of the Winter Texans mean extra tee time demand.
Where to stay in January
January is peak season for monthly RV sites and rentals, so book well ahead. In the west Valley, Bentsen Grove Resort in Mission listed three months on a standard RV site for $1,400 plus electric (card effective November 1, 2025), about 8 minutes from Shary. For a hotel, La Quinta McAllen Convention Center is 4 minutes from Champion Lakes; its Winter Texan month rates were not checked.
On the coast, Kayak says January is typically the cheapest month at Isla Grand Beach Resort, and a beachfront two-bedroom at Inverness via SPI Rentals listed at $3,250 for January 2027. Our guide to where to stay in the Rio Grande Valley in winter compares the bases.
Passes for a January stay
If you are staying the month or longer, a package beats daily fees. Tierra del Sol's 1-month package is sold April to December only, so in January the choice there is the 3-month package: $800 single or $1,200 a couple, a round a day with a cart. Champion Lakes sells a 20-round Smart Card for $561, and Shary a 20-round card for about $400. See Rio Grande Valley golf passes.
Getting there in January
American Eagle's seasonal Chicago O'Hare flights to Harlingen (HRL) start December 19, 2026, and Delta and Sun Country fly seasonal Minneapolis/St. Paul routes there. McAllen (MFE) has American to Dallas/Fort Worth and United to Houston. Check seasonal schedules before booking. Our flights to McAllen guide compares the airports, and for Arizona's version of the month see Yuma golf in January.
