Rio Grande Valley golf leagues are mostly Winter Texan leagues, and the biggest home for them is Champion Lakes in McAllen, with about thirty leagues based there. RV resorts run their own groups too: Llano Grande advertises leagues, group play and tournaments, and River Bend lists a men's league. Days, formats and fees are set by each league, so ask.
That last point matters for anyone looking for Rio Grande Valley golf leagues before they arrive. No course in our research publishes a league calendar with fees, and no Valley-wide golf pass was found. So this guide is about where the groups are, what the published passes cost if you play with one all winter, and the questions to ask when you arrive. Prices were seen in October 2026 and change.

Champion Lakes, the league hub
The City of McAllen's course, formerly Palm View, is the busiest Winter Texan league venue in the Valley. It is a flat 18 with lakes, 6,748 yards from the back tees, rebuilt in 1999, with a lit range open to 10 PM. It is 7 minutes from downtown McAllen on our routed estimate.
The league load shapes the whole tee sheet. Expect winter mornings to be busy. A past city report said new annual memberships were capped with a waiting list, while non-members kept access to public tee times. If you are not in a league, the 2 PM twilight rate with a cart is $37, and afternoon couples play for $30 for two with a cart from 4 PM standard time. Public times are booked through the city's Club Prophet system. Our Champion Lakes course guide has the full rate card.
Llano Grande Resort
The Llano Grande 18 sits inside the Valley's biggest RV resort in Mercedes, and the resort lists leagues, group play and tournaments among its golf offerings, along with seasonal and annual memberships (prices on request) and Chronogolf tee times. The course is open to the public. The draw is that your group lives on the course. The catch is that reviews since late 2025 complain about bare fairways and uneven greens. See the Llano Grande course guide.
River Bend in Brownsville
River Bend is a riverside course with its own gated 55+ RV park, River Bend Resort. The club site lists a men's league and a new cart fleet arriving in October. The seasonal three-month membership is $200 a month for an individual or $300 for a family, plus a trail fee ($100) or cart fee ($150) per month for an individual. Tee times go through the River Bend app and Chronogolf. Our River Bend course guide covers the course.
Park leagues and par-3s
Many Winter Texan parks run golf leagues as part of their activity programs, alongside dances and crafts. Two parks on our map have a 9-hole par-3 inside the gates: Tropic Star RV Resort in Pharr and Trophy Gardens RV Resort in Alamo. Fees and outside access are not published for either. Ask the activity office when you check in what golf groups the park runs and which course they use. Our RV resorts with golf guide compares the parks.
Evening and casual groups
Not every group plays at 8 AM. Tierra del Sol in Pharr runs a Friday Night 9-Hole Sundowner, though the format and fee are not published. Shary in Mission is lit for night golf with a last tee time of 11 PM, which is unusual anywhere and useful when league mornings fill the sheets. Shary also runs the only published handicap service we found, at $35 a year.
Ebony Hills, Edinburg's 1927 nine-holer, is described by the city as one of the most popular courses with Winter Texans. It is a natural spot for a casual nine with a group, but a new clubhouse is being built through summer 2027, so expect a temporary clubhouse.
When Rio Grande Valley golf leagues play
League golf follows the Winter Texan calendar, and the weather shifts through it. NOAA 1991-2020 normals at McAllen:
- November: about 80F highs and 60F lows, one of the best golf months. Winter Texans arrive through the month, and tee sheets fill by Thanksgiving week (November 26, 2026). Hurricane season ends November 30.
- December: mid-70s afternoons and mornings in the low to mid 50s. Holiday weeks are busy and short days compress the tee sheets.
- January: about 73F highs and 53F lows, with 6.1 rain days. This is the month of Valley cold fronts, which can hold highs in the 50s for a day or two with wind and drizzle. It is the peak Winter Texan month, with the busiest tee sheets.
- February: upper 70s, dry and breezier, at about 11 mph average wind. Still peak season, so book morning times well ahead.
- March: low to mid 80s and windier again. Winter Texans begin heading north late in the month, and tee times open up in April.
A league that tees off at 8 AM in January will often start in the low 50s, so bring layers for the first few holes. Our best time to golf in the Rio Grande Valley guide has the full year.
How to find a league game
- Start with your park. Ask the activity office which golf groups run, what days they play and where.
- Call the pro shop at your home course. Ask which leagues have room, how they handle new players, and whether you need a membership, a punch card or just a daily fee.
- Ask about handicaps. Some groups play net events; Shary's $35 handicap service is one option.
- Ask about cart rules. Several courses charge a trail fee for private carts: Champion Lakes $8 a round or $550 a year, Shary $11 a day, Tierra del Sol $100 a month.
- Go to the Winter Texan Expo. The free expo at the McAllen Convention Center had RV parks and vendors on hand on January 20-21, 2026. A third-party listing gives January 19-20, 2027, not yet confirmed by the organizer.
What a league winter costs
If your league plays most of its golf at one course, the cheapest route is that course's season product. At Tierra del Sol, three months of a round a day with a cart is $800 single, against $41 for a daily round with a cart. At Champion Lakes, the 20-round Smart Card is $561, about $28 a round walking. At Shary, the 20-round card is about $400, near $20 a round. Our Rio Grande Valley golf passes guide compares every published option, and Rio Grande Valley golf rates lists the daily fees.
For the bigger picture, see winter Texan golf and the snowbird golf schedule, which fits league days into a weekly rotation. If you are comparing towns, our guide to Yuma golf leagues in winter covers the Arizona side.
