Cover: Birding and golf in the Rio Grande Valley: which refuge goes with which course

Birding and golf in the Rio Grande Valley fit together well because the best refuges sit beside the public courses. Pair Shary Municipal with Bentsen-Rio Grande Valley State Park in Mission, Tierra Santa or Llano Grande with Estero Llano Grande in Weslaco, and South Padre Island Golf Club with Laguna Atascosa refuge. Most pairs are under 5 miles apart.

The Valley is one of the most famous birding regions in the US, and many Winter Texans come for both. The World Birding Center has several sites across the Valley, and the national wildlife refuges along the river and the Laguna Madre draw birders from everywhere. This guide pairs each major site with the nearest course on our map, so a half day of each fits into one outing.

Quick facts

  • Best pairing near McAllen: Shary Municipal and Bentsen-Rio Grande Valley State Park, about 5 miles apart.
  • Most famous refuge: Santa Ana National Wildlife Refuge, Alamo.
  • Wetland birding: Estero Llano Grande State Park, Weslaco, about 1.5 miles from Llano Grande.
  • Ocelots: Laguna Atascosa National Wildlife Refuge, about 8 miles from South Padre Island Golf Club.
  • Butterflies: National Butterfly Center, Mission, best in fall.
  • In the city: Quinta Mazatlan, McAllen, about 2 miles from Champion Lakes.

Distances in this guide are straight-line miles between the site and the course on our map, not driving distances.

West Valley: Mission and McAllen

Shary Municipal and Bentsen-Rio Grande Valley State Park

This is the strongest single pairing. Bentsen-Rio Grande Valley State Park is the World Birding Center headquarters, and it is car-free inside, with trails, a hawk tower and feeding stations. Entry is charged, per Texas Parks and Wildlife.

Shary is Mission's 27-hole city course, about $21 to walk 18 on the city rate sheet, with a driving range open 7 AM to midnight and night golf with a last tee time of 11 PM. That lighting changes the usual trade-off: you can spend the morning at Bentsen and still play golf after dark. The Shary course guide has the full rate sheet.

Next door to Bentsen is the National Butterfly Center at 3333 Military Rd, run by the North American Butterfly Association. The Valley has the highest butterfly diversity in the US, and fall is the best season. It has closed temporarily in the past, so check before going.

If you are staying the winter, Bentsen Grove Resort is a gated 55+ park on the west edge of Mission aimed at budget-minded Winter Texans who want Bentsen birding nearby. It has no golf on site, and Shary is 8 minutes away. Three months on a standard site start at $1,400 plus electric (rates effective November 1, 2025).

Champion Lakes and Quinta Mazatlan

Quinta Mazatlan is a city-owned 1930s adobe mansion and World Birding Center site set in urban thornforest gardens, just off 10th Street near McAllen airport. It is the easiest birding stop in the city and about 2 miles from Champion Lakes, the McAllen city course. Champion Lakes is $33 to walk and $47 with a cart, and in standard time a twilight round with a cart from 2 PM is $37, so a morning at Quinta and an afternoon round is a natural day. See the Champion Lakes course guide.

The Old Hidalgo Pumphouse, south of McAllen in Hidalgo, is a restored early-1900s steam irrigation pumphouse museum and World Birding Center site with gardens. It doubles as a rainy-day stop.

Central Valley: Alamo, Weslaco and Mercedes

Santa Ana National Wildlife Refuge

Santa Ana is a riverside thornforest refuge on the Rio Grande and one of the best-known birding sites in the US. Look for green jays, chachalacas, Altamira orioles and winter hawks. There are trails and a tram and visitor center; check refuge hours. The nearest course on our map is Tierra Del Sol in Pharr, a flat city 18 at $26 walking or $41 with a cart.

Several RV parks sit in Alamo itself: Trophy Gardens, with a par-3 on site and three months from $2,025 plus electric, and Alamo Rose, three months from $1,980 plus electric. Both prices are from 2025-26 cards.

Estero Llano Grande and two courses

Estero Llano Grande State Park in Weslaco is a wetland World Birding Center park with easy boardwalks and a favourite with Winter Texans for waterbirds and the resident pauraque. It sits about 1.5 miles from Llano Grande and 3.5 miles from Tierra Santa.

That gives you a choice. Tierra Santa is the best-rated public course in the mid-Valley on GolfPass, with GolfNow times from $24 in October 2026. Llano Grande is a budget resort course, from $18.99 on GolfNow, though recent reviews complain of bare fairways and uneven greens. If you are staying at the Llano Grande Resort, the wetlands are close by.

Edinburg Scenic Wetlands

Our map marks the Edinburg Scenic Wetlands about a mile from Los Lagos, Edinburg's long municipal course with 11 acres of lakes. We have no further detail on the wetlands in our research, so check opening times locally.

East Valley and the coast

Laguna Atascosa and South Padre Island Golf Club

Laguna Atascosa National Wildlife Refuge is a large coastal refuge on the Laguna Madre and home of the last wild ocelots in the US. It has drive routes and trails from the visitor center. South Padre Island Golf Club in Laguna Vista is the nearest course, $69 Monday to Thursday or $79 Friday to Sunday before 2 PM with a cart, plus tax. Morning golf is the better bet because the afternoon sea breeze off the Laguna Madre usually builds, which leaves the afternoon for the refuge drive. Our South Padre Island golf guide has more.

On the island, Sea Turtle, Inc. is a rescue and rehabilitation centre with daily public presentations (admission charged).

River Bend and Resaca de la Palma

River Bend Resort & Golf Club sits on the Rio Grande levee west of Brownsville, with mature oaks along the course and RV lots for winter stays. Resaca de la Palma State Park is about 3 miles away, and River Bend's resort listing names it for birding. Expect Border Patrol presence near the levee. Rancho Viejo's two courses, El Diablo and El Angel, are also about 3.4 miles from Resaca.

Planning a birding and golf day

Birding and golf in the Rio Grande Valley compete for the same daylight, so a little planning helps.

  1. Check hours. Refuge and park hours and fees in our research were not re-checked; confirm before you drive.
  2. Use the lit courses. Shary's night golf and Champion Lakes' lit range (to 10 PM) let you bird by day and golf later.
  3. Watch the wind. McAllen averages about 9.5 mph in January and 11.5 mph in March, rising to about 12 mph in April, by NOAA normals.
  4. Mind cold fronts. January fronts can hold highs in the 50s for a day or two.

For more non-golf days, see things to do in the Rio Grande Valley and the best time to golf in the Rio Grande Valley. A winter-long plan is in Winter Texan golf, and RV options are in RV resorts with golf in the Texas Valley. For a desert comparison, see things to do in Yuma for golfers.

Plan it on the map

Every course and RV park in this birding and golf guide is on the McAllen and Rio Grande Valley map. Pick a base near the refuge you care about most, and the plan can build a week, or a whole winter rotation, that leaves mornings free for birding.
