Average high by month: A Rio Grande Valley golf trip itinerary: four days, four courses

A good Rio Grande Valley golf trip itinerary for four days is Champion Lakes in McAllen, Tierra Santa in Weslaco, Tierra Del Sol in Pharr and Rancho Viejo El Diablo near Brownsville. Base in McAllen, keep the drives under an hour, and expect about $149 to $157 in green fees for all four rounds at rates seen in October 2026.

The Valley is flat, cheap and spread out along I-2 from Mission to Harlingen, then south to Brownsville. That shape makes a four-day plan simple: three days on the west and central side, one day east. This Rio Grande Valley golf trip itinerary assumes a short trip, not a Winter Texan season, and it picks courses for variety and value rather than prestige.

Drive times are routed estimates from La Quinta McAllen Convention Center and run a little long on interstate legs. Ratings are men's rating and slope. Twilight starts at 2 PM in standard time and 3 PM during daylight saving.

Day 1: arrive and play Champion Lakes

Fly into McAllen and go straight to Champion Lakes, the city course that used to be called Palm View. It is about 4 minutes from the Ware Road hotels. In standard time the twilight rate, $37 with a cart from 2 PM, is the obvious play for an arrival day. The full rate is $33 to walk plus $14 for a cart.

Champion Lakes is flat with lakes, rebuilt in 1999, and it is home to about thirty Winter Texan leagues, so winter mornings are busy. That is one more reason to play it in the afternoon. The lit range runs to 10 PM if you want to hit balls after the round. Full details are in the Champion Lakes course guide.

Day 2: Tierra Santa in Weslaco

Drive about half an hour east on I-2 to Tierra Santa, a 1997 layout through a housing community that is the best-rated public course in the mid-Valley on GolfPass (4.5 from 105 reviews). It is the longest course on this trip at 7,139 yards from the Black tees, but the Blue tees at 6,601 yards (70.8 / 119) suit most groups.

GolfNow showed tee times from $24 in October 2026. A reviewer reported a $35 twilight rate from 3 PM with a cart and unlimited play, but that is undated. Pace can drag on busy winter days, so take an early time. An August 2026 review mentioned waterlogged paths, so check conditions after heavy rain. See the Tierra Santa course guide.

Day 3: Tierra Del Sol in Pharr

Tierra Del Sol is Pharr's city course, 17 minutes from the Ware Road hotels. It is a flat 18 at 6,827 yards with a driving range (small bucket $5, large $10) and a grill open 7 AM to 2:30 PM.

Rates seen in October 2026: $26 to walk, $41 with a cart, and $28 with a cart from 2 PM in standard time. A replay with a cart is $20, which makes a 27-hole day cheap. Book online. The course is closed Mondays from June to August, which does not affect a winter trip.

Alternative for day 3: Los Lagos

If you want a longer test, Los Lagos in Edinburg is 7,188 yards from the Black tees (74.2 / 132), with 11 acres of lakes and water on 11 or 12 holes. GolfPass reviews on conditions and pace are poor, and Troon was selected in September 2026 to take over, so check recent reviews first. No current rate card was found.

Day 4: Rancho Viejo El Diablo

The last day goes east. Rancho Viejo El Diablo is about an hour from the Ware Road hotels, near Brownsville. It is the harder of the resort's two 18s: tight, tree- and home-lined, with water on about half the holes. From the Blue tees it plays 6,315 yards (71.2 / 122) and from the Gold 6,847 (73.7 / 129).

Rates are not posted online. Undated listings show $37 and $45, so call the club on 956-350-4000. The club is described as leaning toward members, and resort guests, Winter Texan members and the public via GolfNow and TeeOff listings can reportedly play, so confirm outside access when you book.

If you want to skip the morning drive, move to the villas at Rancho Viejo Resort on night three. Each villa has a central suite with a kitchen and bedrooms with two double beds, and an undated listing showed $114 to $199 a night plus a $10 resort fee that covers breakfast. Book by phone and confirm guest tee times.

Alternative for day 4: a coast round

South Padre Island Golf Club in Laguna Vista is 78 minutes from downtown McAllen and costs more: $69 Monday to Thursday or $79 Friday to Sunday before 2 PM, cart included, plus 7.75% tax. Twilight is $50 from 2 PM midweek. Book a morning, because the afternoon sea breeze usually builds. Our South Padre Island golf guide covers it.

When to go

For a short trip, the best time to golf in the Rio Grande Valley is November or February to April. NOAA normals at McAllen give highs of about 80F in November, 77F in February, 83F in March and 88F in April. January is peak Winter Texan month, with the busiest tee sheets and the occasional cold front that holds highs in the 50s for a day or two. April is one of the windiest months, about 12 mph on average.

Hurricane season runs June 1 to November 30. For a summer trip, see Rio Grande Valley summer golf.

Tips for this Rio Grande Valley golf trip itinerary

  1. Play midweek. South Padre Island Golf Club is $10 cheaper Monday to Thursday, and Champion Lakes alone hosts about thirty Winter Texan leagues, so ask each shop which times are open.
  2. Use twilight on travel days. Champion Lakes and Tierra Del Sol both drop to under $40 with a cart from 2 PM in standard time.
  3. Call Rancho Viejo first. It is the only course here without a posted rate or online booking.
  4. Leave room for one non-golf afternoon. Santa Ana National Wildlife Refuge in Alamo and Estero Llano Grande State Park in Weslaco sit in I-2 corridor towns you pass on day two; see birding and golf in the Rio Grande Valley.

Questions golfers ask

What is a good four-day Rio Grande Valley golf trip itinerary?

Base in McAllen and play Champion Lakes on arrival, Tierra Santa in Weslaco on day two, Tierra Del Sol in Pharr on day three and Rancho Viejo El Diablo near Brownsville on day four. The longest drive is about an hour, to Rancho Viejo. Swap in Los Lagos or South Padre Island Golf Club if you want a longer course or a coast day.

How much do the green fees cost for this itinerary?

Rates seen in October 2026: Champion Lakes $47 with a cart ($37 twilight from 2 PM), Tierra Santa from $24 on GolfNow, Tierra Del Sol $41 with a cart, and Rancho Viejo El Diablo $37 to $45 on undated listings. That is roughly $149 to $157 for four rounds before tax. Rates change, so confirm each one.

Which airport should I fly into?

McAllen (MFE) is about 5 minutes from downtown and closest to three of the four courses. Harlingen (HRL) has Southwest and seasonal nonstops from Minneapolis and Chicago and is about 50 minutes from McAllen. Brownsville (BRO) is closest to Rancho Viejo.

When is the best time for a Valley golf trip?

November and February to April are the strongest months for a short trip. NOAA normals give McAllen highs near 80F in November and 77-83F in February and March. January is peak season with the busiest tee sheets and occasional cold fronts.

Can I book these tee times online?

Champion Lakes uses the city's Club Prophet system and Tierra Del Sol books online. Tierra Santa sells times on GolfNow. Rancho Viejo does not post rates or a booking window online, so call the club on 956-350-4000.

Should I stay in one hotel or two?

One McAllen hotel works for all four days, because the farthest course is about an hour away. If you want a shorter last morning, move to the Rancho Viejo villas on night three; third-party listings say resort guests can play both courses, which you should confirm.

Is Los Lagos a good substitute?

Los Lagos in Edinburg is the longest public course on the west side at 7,188 yards from the Black tees, with water on 11 or 12 holes. Recent GolfPass reviews on upkeep are weak, and Troon takes over management from late 2026, so read recent reviews before booking.
