Scorecard: Rio Grande Valley summer golf: how to play the hot months

Rio Grande Valley summer golf is dawn golf. From June to August highs run about 97-100F, mornings stay near 78-79F and the humidity pushes the heat index higher still. Courses stay open with their lowest rates and quiet sheets, so the play is a first tee time or a night round, a cart and plenty of water.

Most Winter Texans are gone by April, RV-resort activity programs and some restaurants scale back from May to October, and the Valley's courses go back to local players. That has real advantages if you live here or are passing through. This guide to Rio Grande Valley summer golf covers what the heat actually looks like, the options for playing around it, the storm season and the rates and summer details in our research as of October 2026.

Quick facts

  • Hottest month: August, 99.6F normal high at McAllen.
  • Warm nights: lows of about 78-79F from June to August.
  • Wettest month: September, 4.61 in at McAllen and 5.73 in at Brownsville.
  • Hurricane season: June 1 to November 30; peak August-September.
  • Night golf: Shary in Mission, last tee time 11 PM.
  • Rates: the lowest of the year; per-course summer rates are mostly not published.

Rio Grande Valley summer golf weather

The table shows why golf moves to the edges of the day. A 78F low means there is no cool morning to wait for, only a less hot one.

Two details matter for planning. The coast is cooler in the afternoon, by about 3F in August, because of the sea breeze, but the mornings are almost identical. And September is a different month from the rest of summer: calmer wind (about 8.4 mph), more rain and the peak of storm risk. Courses can be soggy in September, so check before driving out.

Three ways to play summer golf in the Valley

1. First tee time, riding

The standard summer plan is the first tee time of the day with a cart. At Champion Lakes, McAllen's city course, the clubhouse opens at 6:30 AM, and the posted rates (effective February 1, 2026) are $33 to walk 18 and $14 per person for a cart. At Tierra del Sol in Pharr, golf starts at 7 AM, with $41 for 18 with a cart. Carry more water than you think you need, and plan to finish before the worst of the afternoon.

2. Night golf at Shary

Shary Municipal in Mission is lit for night golf, with a last tee time of 11 PM. That is unusual anywhere and it is the most useful summer option in the Valley. Night play makes the course usable year round. Rates on the city rate sheet (undated) were $21 to walk 18 and $16 for nine, with a cart at $25 for 18 holes ($12.50 each when shared). The driving range runs 7 AM to midnight. The Shary course guide has the full rate details.

3. Late evening nine

The evening rates in the Valley use daylight saving time in summer. At Champion Lakes, twilight with a cart is $37 from 3 PM during daylight saving time, and the afternoon couples rate ($30 for two with a cart) and family rate ($25) start at 5:30 PM. Tierra del Sol's twilight is $28 with a cart from 3 PM in daylight saving time, and the course runs a Friday Night 9-Hole Sundowner event. Champion Lakes' range is lit until 10 PM if you just want to hit balls after dark.

Summer rates and closures

The research for this guide found very few published summer rate cards. Most courses list a single rate, and the summer fields in our course files are blank. What the files do show:

Course Posted rate Summer detail
Shary Municipal, Mission$21 walk, cart $25 for 18Night golf, last tee 11 PM
Champion Lakes, McAllen$33 walk, $47 with cartCouples rate from 5:30 PM in DST; McAllen Amateur hosted in late June
Tierra del Sol, Pharr$26 walk, $41 with cartClosed Mondays June-August (golf site); 1-month package $350 (April-December)
Llano Grande, MercedesGolfNow from $18.99Open to the public year round
South Padre Island GC, Laguna Vista$69 Mon-Thu, $79 Fri-Sun before 2 PMClub says it has variable and seasonal rates; card has no dates

Rates seen October 2026 on city and course pages or GolfNow; Shary's rate sheet is undated. Rates change; confirm before you go.

Two summer details stand out. First, Tierra del Sol's one-month package ($350 single with cart) is sold April through December only, so it is a summer option, not a winter one. That works out to about the price of eight or nine daily cart rounds. See the Tierra del Sol course guide. Second, the McAllen Amateur Golf Championship is played at Champion Lakes in late June (listings for 2026 differed between June 25-27 and June 26-28), so the course is tied up that weekend.

Construction is also worth knowing about. At Ebony Hills in Edinburg, a new clubhouse broke ground in August 2026 and play continues from a temporary facility until about summer 2027.

Storms and summer travel

Hurricane season starts on June 1. The peak is August and September, and September is the wettest month in the Valley by far. Recent hits include Hurricane Dolly in 2008 and Hurricane Hanna in 2020. Tropical storms can bring flooding rain and closures. If you book summer or early-fall golf, use flexible rates and check cancellation terms; prepaid GolfNow Hot Deals, for example, are refundable only with 24 or more hours' notice. Our guide to hurricane season South Texas golf covers the planning in more detail.

Where to stay in summer

Hotel rates for summer were not checked for this guide, so we cannot say how far they fall. Some resort-owned rentals in the RV parks do publish lower off-season prices. Tropic Star RV Resort in Pharr listed a one-bedroom park model at $1,500 a month in season (October-March) and $1,200 off-season, and a two-bedroom mobile home at $1,650 and $1,350, with electric extra. Trophy Gardens RV Resort in Alamo listed a travel trailer at $1,400 in season and $1,200 off-season. Electric is metered on monthly stays, and in a Valley summer that line on the bill matters. Expect activity calendars to be thin from May to October.

For a short summer visit, Hampton Inn & Suites Mission is about 8 minutes from Shary, which suits a night round, and has a grab-and-go breakfast bag Monday to Friday for early starts.

Who Rio Grande Valley summer golf suits

  • Locals and year-round residents who want quiet sheets and the lowest prices.
  • Business travellers in McAllen with an evening free, thanks to Shary's lights.
  • Golfers driving through on a summer road trip who can start at dawn.

It does not suit a planned golf trip. Our season guides are clear that June to September is not a trip season. For the months that are, see the best time to golf in the Rio Grande Valley and McAllen weather by month. If you split the year between winter golf towns, Yuma summer golf compares a desert summer.

Questions golfers ask

How hot is the Rio Grande Valley in summer?

NOAA 1991-2020 normals at McAllen give highs of about 97F in June, 98.5F in July and 99.6F in August, with lows around 78-79F. It is humid rather than desert-dry, so the heat index runs well above the air temperature.

Is summer golf in the Rio Grande Valley worth it?

For locals and visitors who can play at dawn or at night, yes. Courses stay open year round with their lowest rates and quiet tee sheets. It is not a trip season, though, and mornings never really cool off.

Can I play golf at night in McAllen?

Yes. Shary Municipal in Mission is lit for night golf with a last tee time of 11 PM, and its driving range is open 7 AM to midnight. Champion Lakes in McAllen has a lit range open until 10 PM.

Are courses open on Mondays in summer?

Not all of them. Tierra del Sol in Pharr says golf runs Tuesday to Sunday, 7 AM-6 PM, and is closed Mondays from June to August, though a city page lists seven days. Call before a Monday round.

Is the coast cooler for summer golf?

A little. Brownsville runs 2-4F cooler than McAllen on summer afternoons thanks to the sea breeze, with an August normal high of 96.3F against 99.6F. It is also wetter, especially in September.

What about hurricanes?

Hurricane season runs June 1 to November 30, with the peak in August and September. Recent Valley hits include Hurricane Dolly in 2008 and Hurricane Hanna in 2020. Book flexible rates for summer and early fall.

Are RV parks and rentals cheaper in summer?

Some rentals are. Tropic Star RV Resort in Pharr listed a one-bedroom park model at $1,500 a month in season (October-March) and $1,200 off-season, plus electric. Many RV site cards have one rate all year.
