Hurricane season in South Texas runs June 1 to November 30, and for golf in the Rio Grande Valley the real risk sits in August and September, with September the wettest month by far. The main Winter Texan season, roughly November to March, barely overlaps it. For a trip in the hot months, book flexible rates and check course conditions after rain.
This guide is about hurricane season South Texas golf in practical terms: how much rain falls when, where the risk is higher, which bookings you can cancel and which you cannot, and how to plan around a storm. It uses NOAA normals, the history in our research and the cancellation terms we found in October 2026.
Quick facts
- Season: June 1 to November 30 every year.
- Peak: August and September.
- Wettest month: September, 4.61 in at McAllen and 5.73 in at Brownsville.
- Recent Valley hits: Hurricane Dolly (2008) and Hurricane Hanna (2020).
- Overlap with peak season: only the first weeks of the Winter Texan season, before November 30.
- Drier side: the west and central Valley (Mission, McAllen, Weslaco).
How real is the hurricane risk for a golf trip?
The honest answer is that hurricane season matters most for summer and early-fall trips, which are not prime golf months in the Valley anyway. From June to September highs run 94-100F with muggy nights, and our season research calls it not a trip season. Most golfers who come for the winter will never see a tropical system.
What does affect golfers is rain. The NOAA normals show the jump in September clearly.
| Month | McAllen rain (in) | McAllen rain days | Brownsville rain (in) | Brownsville rain days |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| June | 3.05 | 4.8 | 2.86 | 5.8 |
| July | 2.03 | 4.7 | 1.98 | 4.8 |
| August | 1.81 | 4.7 | 2.16 | 6.1 |
| September | 4.61 | 8.0 | 5.73 | 11.1 |
| October | 2.10 | 5.8 | 3.83 | 7.6 |
| November | 1.17 | 5.2 | 1.76 | 7.0 |
Source: NOAA NCEI 1991-2020 normals at the McAllen and Brownsville airports. Rain days are days with at least 0.01 inch.
These are averages over 30 years, and a single tropical storm can bring more than a normal month in a few days. That is why September is the month to avoid if you have a choice, and why October on the coast is still wetter than many golfers expect.
Coast vs inland in hurricane season
Brownsville, about 55 miles east-southeast of McAllen and near the Gulf, is wetter all year: about 26.8 inches a year against 22.2 at McAllen. In September and October the gap is widest. The courses closest to the Gulf are South Padre Island Golf Club in Laguna Vista, the Rancho Viejo pair north of Brownsville (El Diablo and El Angel) and River Bend on the Rio Grande west of Brownsville.
If you are booking a late-summer or early-fall round and want the better odds, the west and central Valley is the drier base. Champion Lakes is about 7 minutes from downtown McAllen and Shary Municipal in Mission about 13. Our McAllen golf courses guide covers that side of the Valley.
After the rain
Storms do not just cancel the day they arrive. Courses can be soggy in September, and our research includes an August 2026 review of Tierra Santa in Weslaco that mentioned waterlogged paths and overwatered areas. Some stays have their own drainage issues: guests at Courtyard by Marriott Brownsville report that the parking lot floods in heavy rain, and a reviewer at Fun-N-Sun RV Resort in San Benito reported flooding. Call the pro shop for cart rules before driving out after a wet spell. The Tierra Santa course guide has the course contacts.
Cancellation terms that matter in hurricane season
This is where hurricane season South Texas golf planning really happens. Different bookings have very different rules, and the strictest ones are often the cheapest prices.
| Booking | Terms found (October 2026) |
|---|---|
| South Padre Island GC tee time | Club charges a no-show fee for the full reservation |
| GolfNow Hot Deals (any course) | Prepaid; refundable only with 24+ hours' notice |
| Valley hotels (most in our research) | "Varies by rate" |
| Tropic Star, Trophy Gardens, Alamo Rose RV parks | Full refund only within 24 hours of booking; $250 non-refundable deposit on monthly stays |
| Llano Grande Resort | Deposit refundable less $49.50 if cancelled in writing 60+ days out; non-refundable inside 60 days (medical or family death considered) |
| Bentsen Grove Resort | Full refund with written notice before December 1 |
Terms change. Read them again when you book.
What follows from the table:
- For tee times, book directly with a course that lets you cancel, and call early. At South Padre Island Golf Club, a missed time can cost you the full booking. GolfNow Hot Deals undercut rack rates (afternoon slots near $42 in October 2026 at that club), but the 24-hour rule means a storm forecast inside a day leaves you exposed.
- For hotels, pick the flexible rate in June to November and accept that it costs a little more.
- For RV parks, the strict refund rules are not a hurricane season issue for most Winter Texans, since stays start in the fall. If you book a site for an early arrival, read the Llano Grande Resort and Bentsen Grove Resort terms closely, since they are the most forgiving in our files.
A hurricane season South Texas golf checklist
- Avoid September if you can. It is the peak of storm risk and the wettest month, especially on the coast.
- Prefer late May or October over July to September. Both still sit inside hurricane season, but normal highs are lower (about 93F in May and 89F in October against 97-100F from June to August) and both get far less rain than September.
- Base yourself inland. McAllen and Mission are the drier side.
- Book flexible. Refundable hotel rates, direct tee times you can cancel and no prepaid golf inside the forecast window.
- Keep a rainy-day list. McAllen's International Museum of Art & Science and the Museum of South Texas History in Edinburg are good indoor half-days. See things to do in the Rio Grande Valley.
- Watch the forecast before travel. Tropical storms can bring flooding rain and closures, and flexible bookings let you move.
October: the shoulder of the season
October is the month where hurricane season and golf season meet. Highs are in the upper 80s, still humid early, and the first cool fronts arrive. It can also bring heavy rain, especially on the coast: Brownsville averages 3.83 inches in October against 2.10 inches at McAllen, with 7.6 rain days against 5.8. Winter Texans start arriving late in the month, and many parks and courses switch to season pricing around November 1, so check each one.
For hurricane season South Texas golf in October, the same rules apply as in summer, only with better golf weather. Base yourself inland if you can, book flexible, and give the coastal rounds a weather day either side. By November the rainfall drops to 1.17 inches at McAllen.
Hurricane season and the Winter Texan calendar
For the winter crowd the overlap is small. Winter Texans begin arriving in late October, and tee sheets fill by Thanksgiving week (November 26, 2026), a few days before the season ends on November 30. If you are driving down in October, it is worth having flexible arrival dates. Once you are settled, the November to March golf season is outside hurricane season altogether, so hurricane season South Texas golf planning is mostly a question for summer and early-fall visitors. Our winter Texan golf guide covers the season, and Rio Grande Valley golf in November covers the arrival month.
For the hot months in general, see Rio Grande Valley summer golf. For the full year, the best time to golf in the Rio Grande Valley puts every month side by side.
Plan it on the map
Open the Rio Grande Valley golf map to compare the inland and coastal courses and the drive times between them. The $30 plan can build a trip that keeps you on the drier side of the Valley, or set up a full winter stay that starts after the storm season ends.

Very little. The Winter Texan peak runs roughly November to March, and hurricane season ends on November 30. Only early November arrivals overlap the tail of the season.
Which part of the Valley gets more rain?
The coast. Brownsville averages 5.73 inches in September and 3.83 inches in October, against 4.61 and 2.10 inches at McAllen. Brownsville also averages about 26.8 inches a year to McAllen's 22.2.
