A buddies golf trip in the Texas Valley works best with a foursome in one villa or two suites, three or four cheap rounds, and one night of golf under the lights in Mission. Rounds on this plan run from $16 for Shary's night nine to $79 at South Padre Island Golf Club at rates seen in October 2026, and three nights of golf and rooms can come in around $280 to $290 per person before food, cars and flights.
The Rio Grande Valley is not a famous buddies destination, which is part of the appeal. Courses are flat, cheap and rarely precious about groups, and the Valley has two very different styles of trip: a golf-first week around McAllen and Rancho Viejo, or a beach-first trip on South Padre Island with a round or two in Laguna Vista. This guide covers rooms, tee times and money for both.
Quick facts
- Best room for a foursome: a villa at Rancho Viejo Resort, on the El Diablo course.
- Best McAllen base: two two-room suites at Embassy Suites McAllen Convention Center, from $112 a night (Kayak, seen October 2026).
- Night golf: Shary Municipal, last tee time 11 PM.
- Toughest test: Rancho Viejo El Diablo, 6,847 yards, 73.7 / 129.
- Coast round: South Padre Island Golf Club, $69 to $79 with a cart before 2 PM.
- Budget: roughly $280 to $290 per person for three nights, three rounds and a night nine, McAllen plan.
Rooms for a buddies golf trip in the Texas Valley

Rates come from Kayak hotel pages and are typical prices with estimated taxes, not quotes, seen October 26, 2026. Weekend rates were not obtained for most hotels. The Rancho Viejo rate is from an undated third-party listing, and it is not clear whether it covers a whole villa, so ask.
The Rancho Viejo villa
This is the closest thing in the Valley to waking up on the first tee. The resort describes 22 villas, each with a central suite and bedrooms that have their own entrances, so a foursome can take one villa and still get privacy. The $10 nightly resort fee, per Kayak, covers breakfast, pool, fitness and parking. Two courses sit outside the door: El Diablo, the hard one, and El Angel, a par-70 that is friendlier for mixed handicaps.
The catches: there is no online booking engine, some reviews mention maintenance problems, and the club is moving toward member-first use (the range bay closed to the public in January 2026). Book by phone and confirm that guests can play both courses. Our Rancho Viejo golf guide has more.
A McAllen suite base
Embassy Suites is the best-reviewed big hotel in McAllen (Kayak 9.1 from 611 reviews). Two suites for a foursome gives each pair a living room, and the free breakfast and evening reception cut daily costs. For a group that wants to walk to bars at night, Casa de Palmas is downtown, a short walk from the 17th Street entertainment district, though two-bed rooms are a minority of its inventory.
Group tee times: how booking works
None of the Valley courses in our research publish a group or outing policy, so call the pro shop for anything over two foursomes. What is published:
- Champion Lakes: city tee sheet on Club Prophet. About thirty Winter Texan leagues play here, so winter mornings fill.
- Shary Municipal: walk-ins and phone reservations (956-580-8770). Carts are $25 for 18, or $12.50 each when shared.
- Tierra Santa: GolfNow, from $24 in October 2026. Pace can drag on busy winter days.
- South Padre Island Golf Club: booking window not published. The club charges a no-show fee for the full reservation, and GolfNow Hot Deals are prepaid and refundable only with 24 or more hours' notice.
- Rancho Viejo: reportedly through Chronogolf, reservations required. Call 956-350-4000.
For more on windows and getting morning times in season, see Rio Grande Valley tee times.
A three-day buddies plan
Day 1, McAllen and Mission. Land at McAllen (MFE), about 5 minutes from downtown, and play Champion Lakes at twilight: $37 with a cart from 2 PM in standard time. After dinner, head to Shary, about 13 minutes from downtown, for a lit nine. Shary charges $16 to walk 9.
Day 2, Weslaco. Morning at Tierra Santa, the best-reviewed public course in the mid-Valley. The Black tees are 7,139 yards (73.6 / 124) for the long hitters and the Blue 6,601 (70.8 / 119) for everyone else.
Day 3, Rancho Viejo. Drive about an hour east and play El Diablo. If the group has the energy, El Angel is next door. Fly home from Harlingen (HRL), which has Southwest, American and United, or Brownsville (BRO), which has American and United.
The coast version swaps day 3 for South Padre Island Golf Club and a night on the island. Book the morning, because the afternoon sea breeze off the Laguna Madre usually builds. See South Padre Island golf.

| Champion Lakes, twilight with cart | $37 | Rate card effective Feb 1, 2026 |
| Shary night nine, walking | $16 | City rate sheet, undated |
| Tierra Santa | $24 and up | GolfNow from $24 |

| Total, golf and rooms | About $282 to $290 plus Tierra Santa extras | Before food, car and flights |
Add a cart at Tierra Santa, weekend or peak-season room rates, food and the car, and the total climbs; we do not have published figures for those, so price them for your dates. Swap in South Padre Island Golf Club at $79 on a weekend morning, plus 7.75% tax, and the golf line rises. The full breakdown at three budgets is in Rio Grande Valley golf trip cost.
When to go with a group
- November: about 80F highs and drier; tee sheets fill by Thanksgiving week (Nov 26, 2026).
- January to mid-March: peak Winter Texan season, the hardest time to get morning tee times. Mid-March is also South Padre spring break.
- April: high 80s, windy (about 12 mph average) and quieter after Easter (Mar 28, 2027).
The best time to golf in the Rio Grande Valley covers the full year. For a shorter version of this trip, see the Rio Grande Valley golf weekend plan.
Good to know
- El Diablo (129 from the Gold tees) and Los Lagos (132 from the Black) are the only courses open to visitors on our map with a published slope of 129 or more; the city courses are flat.
- Shary's 20-round card (about $400) is a winter play, not a buddies one.
- Course pages with full tee data: the Rancho Viejo El Diablo course guide and the South Padre Island Golf Club course guide.

Questions golfers ask
Where should a group stay for a buddies golf trip in the Texas Valley?
For golf first, the Rancho Viejo villas put a foursome in one unit on the El Diablo course, with a shared kitchen and living room. For a McAllen base, two two-room suites at Embassy Suites give each pair a living room, with free breakfast and an evening reception. For a beach trip, condos at Margaritaville or Isla Grand on South Padre Island sleep a group.
How do group tee times work at Valley courses?
Most public courses book by phone or online, and none of our sources publish a special group policy. South Padre Island Golf Club charges a no-show fee for the full reservation, and its GolfNow Hot Deals are prepaid and refundable only with 24 or more hours' notice. River Bend books through its app and Chronogolf.
What does a Valley buddies trip cost per person?
Using rates seen in October 2026, three rounds plus a night nine and three nights sharing a suite come to roughly $280 to $290 per person on a McAllen plan, before Tierra Santa cart fees, food, cars and flights. A coast plan with South Padre Island Golf Club costs more on golf. Rates change, so treat these as a guide.
Can we play golf at night in the Valley?
Yes. Shary Municipal in Mission is lit for night golf with a last tee time of 11 PM, and its range is open until midnight. That is rare anywhere and useful for a group that wants an extra nine after dinner.
Which Valley course is the best test for good players?
Rancho Viejo El Diablo is narrow and watery, 6,847 yards from the Gold tees (73.7 / 129). Los Lagos in Edinburg is longer at 7,188 yards (74.2 / 132), but recent reviews on its upkeep are weak. Tierra Santa in Weslaco is 7,139 yards from the Black tees and well reviewed.
When should a group go?
November and February to April work best. January to mid-March is the busiest stretch for tee sheets because of Winter Texans, and South Padre spring break fills the island in mid-March. April is cheaper and windier.
Do we need a car?
Yes. The courses spread from Mission to Brownsville and Laguna Vista, and the drive from downtown McAllen to Rancho Viejo is about an hour. One car per foursome with clubs is the usual setup.
