A Rio Grande Valley golf weekend: three days, one base, no wasted driving
A Rio Grande Valley golf weekend from Friday to Sunday: two routes, McAllen or Harlingen, with flights, weekend rates, night golf and drive times kept short.

The simplest Rio Grande Valley golf weekend is three rounds from one McAllen hotel: Champion Lakes on Friday afternoon, Tierra Santa on Saturday morning with a lit nine at Shary that night, and Tierra Del Sol on Sunday before your flight. No drive is longer than about 34 minutes, and the green fees seen in October 2026 come to about $103 to $118 before tax.
A Rio Grande Valley golf weekend leaves no slack for long transfers, so the trick is to pick one side of the Valley and stay there. The Valley stretches about an hour from Mission to Brownsville, and the coast is farther still. Below are two tight routes: a west-side weekend from McAllen, and an east-side weekend from Harlingen with an optional coast round.
Quick facts
- Length: Friday to Sunday, three rounds plus an optional night nine.
- West route airport: McAllen (MFE), about 5 minutes from downtown.
- East route airport: Harlingen (HRL), about 50 minutes from McAllen.
- West green fees: about $103 to $118 for three rounds and a night nine (seen October 2026, before tax).
- Weekend premium: only at South Padre Island Golf Club in our data ($79 Friday to Sunday).
- Clock: Central Time; standard time from November 1, 2026 to March 14, 2027.
- Best months: November and February to April.
Route 1: the McAllen Rio Grande Valley golf weekend
| When | Course | Drive from hotel | Rate seen |
|---|---|---|---|
| Friday, 2 PM | Champion Lakes | 7 min | $37 twilight with cart |
| Saturday, morning | Tierra Santa, Weslaco | 31 to 34 min | From $24 on GolfNow |
| Saturday, evening | Shary Municipal, Mission, 9 holes | 10 to 12 min | $16 walking |
| Sunday, morning | Tierra Del Sol, Pharr | 15 to 19 min | $26 walking, $41 with cart |
Drive times are routed estimates from Casa de Palmas downtown and the La Quinta Mission at West McAllen, and run a little long on the interstate. Twilight starts at 2 PM in standard time and 3 PM in daylight saving time.
Friday: land and play twilight
McAllen airport has American to Dallas/Fort Worth and Phoenix, United to Houston, Delta Connection to Austin, and Allegiant to Las Vegas, per the airport's route table (October 2026). Book a flight that lands by lunchtime and you can be on the tee at Champion Lakes by 2 PM, when the twilight rate drops to $37 with a cart. It is the McAllen city course, formerly Palm View, flat with lakes and a lit range open to 10 PM. Winter mornings are busy with about thirty Winter Texan leagues, which is another reason the afternoon slot suits a Friday arrival. See the Champion Lakes course guide.
Saturday: the best round, then golf under lights
Tierra Santa is the best-rated public course in the mid-Valley on GolfPass (4.5 from 105 reviews), a 1997 layout at 7,139 yards from the Black tees. The Blue tees, 6,601 yards (70.8 / 119), suit most weekend players. Take an early time: reviewers say pace can drag on busy winter days. The Tierra Santa course guide has the full card.
After dinner, drive to Shary in Mission. It is lit for night golf with a last tee time of 11 PM, which is unusual anywhere. Nine holes walking is $16; a cart for 9 is not separately listed on the rate sheet we saw, so ask. The range runs to midnight.
Sunday: one more round and home
Tierra Del Sol, the Pharr city course, is 6,827 yards and books online. The grill opens at 7 AM. Walking is $26, a cart makes it $41, and a replay with a cart is $20 if your flight is late. McAllen airport is a few minutes from the hotels, so a morning tee time and an afternoon flight is realistic.
Route 2: the Harlingen weekend with a coast option
| When | Course | Drive from Hampton Inn Harlingen | Rate seen |
|---|---|---|---|
| Friday, afternoon | Tony Butler, Harlingen | 8 min | $36 with cart (report, year not shown) |
| Saturday, morning | South Padre Island Golf Club, Laguna Vista | 36 min | $79 Friday to Sunday before 2 PM, cart included, plus tax |
| Sunday, morning | Rancho Viejo El Angel | 16 min | $40 (undated listing) |
Base at the Hampton Inn & Suites Harlingen, which showed rooms from $97 for a Sunday night in early November on Kayak (seen October 2026). It has free breakfast, laundry and a fridge in every room, and Harlingen airport is about 10 minutes away.
Harlingen airport has Southwest to Austin, Dallas Love and Houston Hobby, American to Dallas/Fort Worth, United to Houston, and seasonal nonstops from Minneapolis on Delta and Sun Country, plus American from Chicago O'Hare from December 19, 2026. That makes it the weekend airport for upper-Midwest golfers. Check seasonal schedules before booking.
Friday: Tony Butler is Harlingen's 27-hole city course, flat and busy in season. The $36 rate with a cart comes from a news report of a city rate increase whose year is not shown, so confirm it. In the same undated report, the course's general manager put play at about 40,000 rounds a year.
Saturday: South Padre Island Golf Club is the coast round. Book the morning, because the afternoon sea breeze off the Laguna Madre usually builds. If you would rather sleep in, the Friday to Sunday twilight rate is $55 from 1 PM. GolfNow Hot Deals can be cheaper but are prepaid and refundable only with 24 or more hours' notice, and the club charges a no-show fee for the full reservation. More in South Padre Island golf.
Sunday: El Angel is the friendlier of Rancho Viejo's two courses, a par 70 at 6,301 yards from the Gold tees (71.5 / 120). No rate sheet is posted, so call 956-350-4000 and confirm outside access.
What each Rio Grande Valley golf weekend costs
Using the rates above, seen in October 2026 and before tax:
| Item | McAllen route | Harlingen route |
|---|---|---|
| Golf | About $103 to $118 (three rounds and a night nine) | About $155 (Tony Butler $36, South Padre $79, El Angel $40) |
| Two nights' hotel, per room | From about $81 to $94 a night on sample dates (La Quinta Mission, Casa de Palmas) | From about $97 a night on a sample Sunday (Hampton Inn Harlingen) |
| Weekend room rates | Mostly not published in our data | Not published in our data |
Hotel figures are Kayak samples for single nights in late October and early November 2026, not quotes, and weekend nights can cost more. The Harlingen route is pricier on golf because of the coast round; swap South Padre for Treasure Hills (about $40, undated) and the two routes cost about the same. Our Rio Grande Valley golf trip cost guide breaks down longer trips at three budgets.
When to book a Rio Grande Valley golf weekend
The Valley's peak season runs roughly November to March. January to mid-March is the busiest, with Winter Texans filling morning tee times. For a weekend, that means:
- November is the sweet spot: about 80F highs, drier air, and tee sheets that fill only by Thanksgiving week (November 26, 2026).
- February is dry and in the upper 70s; Charro Days in Brownsville runs late in the month, so Brownsville hotels are busier that weekend.
- Mid-March brings South Padre spring break. Skip the coast route those weeks.
- April is quieter after Easter (March 28, 2027) but one of the windiest months, about 12 mph on average.
Hurricane season runs June 1 to November 30. For the full calendar see the best time to golf in the Rio Grande Valley and McAllen weather by month.
Weekend tips
- Book Saturday first. It is the round most likely to sell out in season.
- Use twilight on travel days. Champion Lakes is $37 with a cart from 2 PM; Tierra Del Sol is $28 with a cart from 2 PM.
- Keep it to one side. Crossing from Mission to Rancho Viejo costs about an hour each way.
- Pack a layer in winter. Fronts can hold highs in the 50s for a day or two.
- Need more days? The Rio Grande Valley golf trip itinerary stretches this to four, and the buddies golf trip guide covers rooms for a group.

Questions golfers ask
What is the best plan for a Rio Grande Valley golf weekend?
Fly into McAllen on Friday and play Champion Lakes at twilight, play Tierra Santa on Saturday morning with a lit nine at Shary that night, and play Tierra Del Sol on Sunday morning before flying home. Every drive is 34 minutes or less from a McAllen base.
Which airport is best for a Valley golf weekend?
McAllen (MFE) for the west-side plan: it is about 5 minutes from downtown, with American, United, Delta Connection and Allegiant. Harlingen (HRL) for the east-side plan: Southwest, American, United, and seasonal nonstops from Minneapolis and, from December 19, 2026, Chicago O'Hare.
Are weekend green fees higher in the Valley?
At South Padre Island Golf Club, yes: $79 Friday to Sunday before 2 PM versus $69 Monday to Thursday, cart included, plus tax. The McAllen and Pharr city rate cards we read show no weekday and weekend split. Rates were seen in October 2026.
Can I play golf on Saturday night?
Yes, at Shary Municipal in Mission. It is lit for night golf with a last tee time of 11 PM, and the range is open until midnight. Nine holes walking is $16 on the city rate sheet.
Where should I stay for a golf weekend?
For the McAllen plan, Casa de Palmas downtown is walkable to the 17th Street entertainment district, and the La Quinta in Mission showed a Saturday night from $81 in October 2026. For the Harlingen plan, the Hampton Inn & Suites Harlingen is 8 minutes from both Tony Butler and Treasure Hills.
What is the weather like for a winter golf weekend?
NOAA normals at McAllen give January highs near 73F and lows near 53F, rising to about 77F in February and 83F in March. Fronts can bring a day or two in the 50s with wind and drizzle in winter, so pack a layer.
Is South Padre worth it for a weekend?
Only if the beach is part of the point. South Padre Island Golf Club is the only course near the island, 36 minutes from a Harlingen hotel, and mid-March spring break makes the island very busy and lodging expensive.
