Slope ladder: Rio Grande Valley golf: areas, season and how to plan a trip or a winter

Rio Grande Valley golf is a string of mostly flat, low-cost courses along I-2 from Mission to Harlingen, then south to Brownsville and east to the coast at Laguna Vista. The season is November to March, when Winter Texans fill the RV parks. Short trips use hotels in McAllen; winter stays use monthly RV sites and course passes.

This guide explains how the pieces fit: the four golf areas, what the weather does month by month, which airport to use and how a three-day trip differs from a three-month winter. Prices were seen in October 2026 and change, so confirm them before booking.

Quick facts

  • Courses open to visitors: 15 on our map, plus two private clubs.
  • Main corridor: I-2 (US-83) through Mission, McAllen, Pharr, Weslaco and Mercedes to Harlingen, then I-69E to Brownsville.
  • Season: roughly November to March; busiest January to mid-March.
  • Typical green fee: about $21-$47 at the city courses (seen October 2026; Shary's rate sheet is undated).

  • Hurricane season: June 1 to November 30.

The four Rio Grande Valley golf areas

West: Mission, McAllen, Pharr and Edinburg

The west side has the most golf in the least driving. Champion Lakes, McAllen's city course, is 7 minutes from downtown. Shary in Mission is 13 minutes and has night golf. Tierra del Sol in Pharr is 14 minutes. Edinburg adds Los Lagos, Ebony Hills and Monte Cristo within about 26 minutes. This is where most hotels are, near the McAllen Convention Center.

Mid-Valley: Weslaco and Mercedes

Tierra Santa in Weslaco, 30 minutes from McAllen, is the pick of the mid-Valley courses. Llano Grande in Mercedes runs through a large RV resort. Many of the big 55+ parks sit in this stretch, between the two ends of the Valley.

East: Harlingen, San Benito, Brownsville and Rancho Viejo

Tony Butler is Harlingen's 27-hole city course, 44 minutes from McAllen, and Treasure Hills is across town. South on I-69E, Rancho Viejo has two 18s and hotel villas on the El Diablo course. Brownsville has its city course and River Bend on the river.

The coast: Laguna Vista and South Padre Island

South Padre Island Golf Club is the only course near the island, 78 minutes from McAllen. There is no golf on the island itself.

The Rio Grande Valley golf season

NOAA 1991-2020 normals at McAllen airport show why the Valley fills up in winter.

Month High / low (F) Rain (in) Rain days Avg wind (mph)
November80.2 / 60.11.175.29.1
December73.8 / 54.11.066.19.2
January72.8 / 52.70.776.19.5
February77.4 / 56.90.724.510.7
March83.2 / 62.71.384.411.5
April88.4 / 68.41.433.812.2
July98.5 / 78.82.034.712.0
September94.3 / 75.64.618.08.4

January is the month of cold fronts: one can hold highs in the 50s for a day or two with wind and drizzle before it warms again. March and April are windier, with two-club days. Summer is long, hot and humid, and September is the wettest month and the peak of hurricane risk. Brownsville is almost identical in winter but wetter, so the west and central Valley is the drier winter base.

Valley courses are bermudagrass. With mild winters the grass usually stays partly green, and the Valley is not known for the multi-week fall overseed closures common in Arizona. After a hard freeze, fairways can go tan for weeks. Our best time to golf in the Rio Grande Valley guide goes month by month.

Getting there

McAllen International (MFE) is about 5 minutes from downtown McAllen, with American to Dallas/Fort Worth and Phoenix, United to Houston and Delta Connection to Austin. Harlingen's Valley International (HRL), about 50 minutes from McAllen, has Southwest and winter nonstops from Minneapolis/St. Paul and, from December 19, 2026, Chicago O'Hare. Brownsville (BRO) is 76 minutes from McAllen but closest to Rancho Viejo and the island. No airport has a nonstop from Canada. San Antonio is about 4 hours 36 minutes by our routed estimate. A short trip vs a winter of Rio Grande Valley golf

The three- to five-day trip

Most groups stay in McAllen near the convention center. The Embassy Suites has two-room suites and free breakfast, with a Sunday-night rate from $112 seen for early November 2026. The La Quinta on Ware Road is 4 minutes from Champion Lakes, from $108. Pay daily green fees, play two west-side courses and Tierra Santa, and add Rancho Viejo or the coast if you will drive an hour. Our Rio Grande Valley golf trip itinerary lays out four days.

The winter stay

Winter Texans, mostly retirees from the Midwest, the Plains and Canada, stay one to five months in 55+ RV and park-model resorts on monthly or seasonal rates. Examples seen in October 2026:

  • Bentsen Grove, Mission: $1,400 for three months on a standard site, plus electric.
  • Tropic Star, Pharr: $2,220 for three months, plus electric, with a par-3 in the park.
  • Llano Grande, Mercedes: RV sites $795-$1,395 a month plus electric, with its own 18 holes.

On the golf side, buy a pass rather than paying daily. Tierra del Sol's three-month package was $800 for one person, one round a day with a cart. The Champion Lakes course guide covers its $561 Smart Card for 20 rounds. There is no Valley-wide pass. See Winter Texan golf and where to stay in the Rio Grande Valley for winter.

Canadians should track their days: US visitors are normally admitted for up to six months, the IRS substantial presence test counts weighted days, and provincial health plans limit time away. This is general information, not tax or legal advice.

Getting tee times in season

From January to mid-March, morning tee times are the scarce resource. Champion Lakes alone is home to about thirty Winter Texan leagues, and Tony Butler in Harlingen reported about 40,000 rounds a year in an undated city report, much of it from Winter Texans. Three habits help:

  • Book online where you can. Tierra del Sol, Los Lagos, Ebony Hills and Champion Lakes take online bookings, and Tierra Santa, Llano Grande and South Padre Island Golf Club sell times on GolfNow. Booking windows were not published for most courses.
  • Play the afternoon. Twilight is often the value round anyway: $37 with a cart from 2 PM at Champion Lakes in standard time, $28 with a cart at Tierra del Sol.
  • Use the lights. Shary in Mission takes tee times until 11 PM.

Our Rio Grande Valley tee times guide has more.

What a day of golf costs

At the city courses, a round with a cart ran about $41-$47 in October 2026 (Tierra del Sol $41, Champion Lakes $47), and walking was $21-$33 (Shary's $21 is from an undated city rate sheet). The resort and coastal rounds cost more: South Padre Island Golf Club was $69-$79 with a cart before 2 PM. Hotel rooms near the McAllen courses started around $81-$112 a night on the late-October and early-November dates we checked. Rates change, and peak-season prices were not checked for most hotels.

How it compares

The Valley's closest rival for a golf winter is Yuma, Arizona, which has desert courses and overseeded winter turf. Our Rio Grande Valley vs Yuma golf comparison sets them side by side, and the Yuma winter golf for snowbirds guide covers the Arizona side.

Plan it on the map

Open the Rio Grande Valley golf map to see every course, hotel and RV resort with drive times between them. The $30 plan builds a day-by-day golf trip, or a whole winter stay of 2-12 weeks with a weekly course rotation, the right passes and a base close to the courses you will play most.

Questions golfers ask

When is the golf season in the Rio Grande Valley?

The main season is roughly November to March, when Winter Texans arrive and highs run from the low 70s to low 80s. January to mid-March is the busiest. Summer golf is possible but hot, with highs of 97-100F from June to August.

Which airport is best for Rio Grande Valley golf?

McAllen (MFE) is about 5 minutes from downtown McAllen and closest to the west-side courses. Harlingen (HRL) has Southwest and winter nonstops from Minneapolis and Chicago. Brownsville (BRO) suits Rancho Viejo and the coast.

How far apart are the Valley's courses?

The Valley stretches about 60 miles. On our routed estimates, Champion Lakes is 7 minutes from downtown McAllen, Tony Butler in Harlingen 44 minutes, Rancho Viejo 57 minutes and South Padre Island Golf Club 78 minutes.

Is there a Valley-wide golf pass?

No. Searches in October 2026 found no multi-course pass or shared punch card. Passes are sold course by course, such as Tierra del Sol's three-month package and Champion Lakes' 20-round Smart Card.

What time zone is the Rio Grande Valley in?

Central Time. Daylight saving ends November 1, 2026 and resumes March 14, 2027. Winnipeg is on the same clock all year, and Toronto is one hour ahead.
