Green-fee ranges: Nuevo Progreso day trip: how to cross and fit it around a golf week

A Nuevo Progreso day trip means parking on the US side at Progreso, about 40 minutes from downtown McAllen, and walking across the bridge to a few blocks of pharmacies, dentists, opticians and restaurants. Bring a passport, passport card, NEXUS or enhanced licence to return, read the State Department advisory, and keep to daytime hours near the bridge.

For Winter Texans it is a regular outing, often combined with a round in Weslaco or Mercedes. This guide covers where the bridge is, what you need to come back, the safety advisory as our research found it, what it costs and how to fit the trip into a golf week. Details were checked in October 2026; border rules change, so check them again before you go.

Quick facts

  • Where: Progreso-Nuevo Progreso International Bridge, south of Progreso, between Weslaco and Mercedes.
  • From McAllen: about 25 miles, 40 minutes.
  • How: most visitors park on the US side and walk across.
  • Documents to return: passport book, passport card, NEXUS, SENTRI or enhanced driver's licence (US citizens); passport or NEXUS (Canadians).
  • Advisory: Tamaulipas is Level 4; the government-employee exception is Nuevo Progreso near the bridge, on foot, 7 AM-6 PM.
  • Vehicle toll: $5 from August 1, 2025 (KRGV); pedestrian fees small and conflicting by source.

Getting to the bridge

The bridge crosses the Rio Grande south of the town of Progreso. From McAllen, head east on I-2 (the US-83 Expressway) toward Weslaco and Mercedes, then south to Progreso. Our router puts it at about 25 miles and 40 minutes from downtown McAllen. From the mid-Valley parks it is closer. Victoria Palms RV Resort in Donna and Llano Grande Resort in Mercedes are both on that side of the Valley.

Most visitors leave the car on the US side and walk. That matches the on-foot entry the advisory describes.

A few practical notes from the same research:

  • Medicine: keep prescriptions for anything you buy in Mexico, and stay within personal-use quantities.
  • Alcohol and tobacco: US and Texas limits apply on return.
  • Canadians on a long stay: your I-94 matters for more than the border. Since April 11, 2025, Canadians aged 14 and over staying 30 days or more who did not get an I-94 must register with USCIS. See our guide for Canadian snowbirds in Texas.

Safety: what the advisory says

The US State Department rates the state of Tamaulipas Level 4, "do not travel," for crime and kidnapping. Its exception for US government employees is Nuevo Progreso within a limited radius of the bridge, entering on foot via the Progreso port between 7 AM and 6 PM. Earlier versions of the advisory asked US citizens to follow the same restrictions. Our research could not confirm whether the 2026 version still says that, so read the current advisory before you go.

Two points follow. First, Reynosa (opposite McAllen, Hidalgo and Pharr) and Matamoros (opposite Brownsville) are outside that exception, so Nuevo Progreso is the crossing the advisory treats differently. Second, the 7 AM-6 PM window is the practical "opening hours" for a day trip: cross after breakfast, come back in the afternoon. Shop hours on the Mexican side were not part of our research.

What it costs

A Nuevo Progreso day trip costs little beyond the bridge fee and whatever you buy.

Item Cost found
Vehicle toll$5 from August 1, 2025 (KRGV; was $4)
Pedestrian feeSmall; sources conflict
FMM tourist permitNot needed inside the border zone
Parking on the US sideNot researched

Beyond the bridge, the spending is up to you: the strip is built around pharmacies, dental and optical work, liquor, crafts and restaurants.

Fitting the trip around golf

A Nuevo Progreso day trip pairs well with golf, because the bridge is on the same side of the Valley as two public courses, so the easy plan is a morning round, then lunch across the river.

Morning round options

  • Tierra Santa, Weslaco. The best-rated public course in the mid-Valley on GolfPass (4.5 from 105 reviews), a 1997 Jeff Brauer and Steve Elkington layout. GolfNow tee times from $24 (seen October 2026). Pace can drag on busy winter days, so take an early time. The Tierra Santa course guide has the tee yardages.
  • Llano Grande, Mercedes. The resort course at the Llano Grande RV community, from $18.99 on GolfNow (seen October 2026). Cheap and friendly; recent reviews complain of bare fairways and uneven greens. Best if you are already staying at the resort. See the Llano Grande course guide.

A sample day

  1. Early morning: tee off at Tierra Santa or Llano Grande.
  2. Late morning: drive south to Progreso and park on the US side.
  3. Midday: walk across for lunch and errands within a few blocks of the bridge.
  4. Afternoon: walk back well before 6 PM, with your documents ready for the US inspection.
  5. Evening: if you want a few more holes, Shary Municipal in Mission is lit for night golf with a last tee time of 11 PM.

If you would rather not golf that day, Estero Llano Grande State Park, also in Weslaco, is a wetland World Birding Center park with easy boardwalks and a Winter Texan favourite.

Where to stay for a crossing day

If Nuevo Progreso is a regular outing for you, the mid-Valley is the sensible base. Victoria Palms RV Resort in Donna is one of the Valley's biggest 55+ resorts, with a ballroom, restaurant and on-site hotel, and it is about 13 minutes from Tierra Santa and 17 from the Llano Grande course. Rates there are by phone or through the Encore booking engine. Llano Grande Resort in Mercedes has its own 18-hole course about 6 minutes from the RV sites, which run $795-$1,395 a month plus metered electric (seen October 2026), and Tierra Santa is about 18 minutes away.

From either one, the bridge is much nearer than it is from McAllen, though we did not route that drive. Our RV resorts with golf in the Texas Valley guide compares those and other parks.

When to go

Nuevo Progreso is built around Winter Texan day-trippers, so expect it busiest in the season, roughly November to March, which is also the best golf weather. Clocks in Nuevo Progreso normally match the Valley, since the border strip kept US-matching daylight saving changes, but that was not re-verified for 2026-27. A watch check on the Mexican side before your return is sensible.

For more ideas, see things to do in the Rio Grande Valley, our winter Texan golf guide and the Rio Grande Valley golf weekly schedule, which leaves room for a crossing day. If you know Yuma, the Algodones day trip is the Arizona version of the same outing.

Plan it on the map

Questions golfers ask

How far is Nuevo Progreso from McAllen?

The Progreso-Nuevo Progreso International Bridge is about 25 miles and 40 minutes from downtown McAllen on our routed estimate. It crosses the Rio Grande south of Progreso, between Weslaco and Mercedes.

What documents do I need for a Nuevo Progreso day trip?

US citizens re-entering by land need a passport book, passport card, NEXUS, SENTRI or an enhanced driver's licence. Canadians need a passport or NEXUS to re-enter the US and should keep their I-94 record if they have one. Mexico does not require a tourist permit (FMM) for short visits inside the border zone.

Is Nuevo Progreso safe?

The US State Department rates Tamaulipas Level 4 (do not travel) for crime and kidnapping. Its exception for US government employees is Nuevo Progreso within a limited radius of the bridge, entering on foot via the Progreso port between 7 AM and 6 PM. Read the current advisory before going.

Should I walk or drive across?

Most visitors park on the US side and walk across. The State Department exception for government employees is for entering on foot. KRGV reported the vehicle toll rising from $4 to $5 from August 1, 2025; pedestrian fees are small but conflict by source.

What do people buy in Nuevo Progreso?

It is a small tourist strip built around Winter Texan day-trippers, with pharmacies, dentists, opticians, liquor, crafts and restaurants within a few blocks of the bridge. Keep prescriptions for medicine bought in Mexico and stay within personal-use quantities.

Is Nuevo Progreso on the same time as McAllen?

Normally, yes. Mexico dropped daylight saving in 2022 except along the northern border strip, where border towns including Rio Bravo and Nuevo Progreso kept US-matching clock changes. This was not re-verified for 2026-27.

Can I golf and visit Nuevo Progreso on the same day?

Yes. Tierra Santa in Weslaco and Llano Grande in Mercedes are on the same side of the Valley as the bridge. Play in the morning, cross for lunch and be back on the US side well before 6 PM.
