Slope ladder: Senior Golf in St. George, Utah: The Right Tees, the Gentler Courses and When to Come

Senior golf in St. George, Utah works best when you pick the right tee, not just the right course. Almost every course here has a forward set with a men's slope under 120, the flattest layouts are St. George Golf Club and SunRiver on the south side of town, and the main senior-specific discount we found is $20 off at Coral Canyon in Washington. Come between November and April, tee off mid-morning, and avoid mid-October unless you're in the Huntsman World Senior Games.

This guide is built around the things golfers over 50 ask about most: which tees to play, how hilly a course is, where the gentler courses are around St. George, what the cart rules are, and when to come.

Senior golf in St. George starts with the tee box

The Course Rating and Slope tell you how hard a set of tees plays. Here are the forward men's tees at the public courses that suit most senior players, all from the USGA database.

Copper RockWhite5,01165.5 / 11570.0 / 129

Two things stand out. First, the forward tees at the hard courses are genuinely playable: Copper Rock has the highest men's Course Rating in the area from the tips (75.8), but its White tees are 5,011 yards at a 115 slope. Second, the next set back can jump a lot. Copper Rock's Silver tees are 5,753 yards at 132, and reviewers there say 15+ handicaps should play forward.

Where the gentler courses are: St. George, Washington, Hurricane and Mesquite

St. George golf courses are spread across several towns in Washington County, plus Mesquite, NV, about 50 minutes down I-15. For a senior golfer, where a course sits tells you a lot about how it plays: the south side is the flat river valley, the west side and Hurricane sit higher with more climb, and Mesquite is lower and warmer.

Climb is the sum of tee-to-green rises on our terrain model. Drive times are free-flow road times, so add traffic.

If you want to stay close to the gentle courses, base yourself on the south side, near the convention center hotels and SunRiver. If you want views and don't mind some elevation in a cart, The Ledges sits at about 3,810 feet, with its back nine on the sandstone bordering Snow Canyon State Park, and runs slightly cooler. Our where to stay for golf in St. George guide compares the parts of town.

Senior golf in St. George by terrain: flat, rolling or canyon

Hills matter more when you're walking, but they also matter in a cart: elevated tees and forced carries cost strokes.

Flattest:

  • SunRiver (26 ft of climb over 18) sits on the flat Virgin River valley floor, with one water hazard. It's straightforward, about 14 minutes from downtown and right off I-15 exit 2. See the SunRiver course guide.
  • St. George Golf Club (42 ft) is the area's only par 73: long from the back, but forgiving, with modest slopes. It has no driving range, so warm up at Southgate about 8 minutes away. See the St. George Golf Club course guide.
  • CasaBlanca in Mesquite (90 ft) is a flat river-bottom course, and unlike most Mesquite courses, carts can reach most of it.

Rolling but manageable: Southgate's front nine is flat and crisscrosses the Santa Clara River; its back nine climbs into the foothills. If you only play nine there, the front is the easy walk. The Ledges has an open, flatter front nine.

Canyon golf to approach with care: Green Spring (canyon carries on 5 and 6), Coral Canyon (its front nine plays much harder, slope 155 from the tips), and Wolf Creek and Falcon Ridge in Mesquite. Wolf Creek is cart-only in practice, with tee-to-green drops of up to about 150 feet in our map data, and the club says rounds exceed five hours.

Cart rules and walking

  • Coral Canyon: half cart, range balls and tax are included. Every player needs their own bag, and there are no extra riders.
  • Green Spring: cart included, two carts per group maximum, no extra riders or spectators.
  • SunRiver: a $30 per-person rider cart fee is listed, and Thursday to Sunday there's a maximum of two carts per tee time.
  • Oasis Palmer and Canyons (Mesquite): 90-degree rule on par 4s and 5s, cart path only on par 3s, two players per cart.
  • City courses: a cart is extra, $20 for 18 at Sunbrook, St. George Golf Club and Southgate. Walking is allowed, and the city calls Southgate the best walk in its system. Dixie Red Hills is a very walkable nine, with the cart an optional $10.

If someone in your group rides along but doesn't play, check first: Coral Canyon and Green Spring don't allow extra riders, and SunRiver charges a rider fee. For more on walking, see walking golf in St. George.

Senior discounts and how to save

Published senior rates are rare in St. George, Utah golf, so senior golf in St. George is cheapest when you pick the season and the time of day. What we found, checked October 2026:

  • Coral Canyon: $20 off for seniors, military and juniors. Peak 18 was about $135 (Feb to May and Sep to Nov, Sunday to Thursday).
  • Cedar Ridge in Cedar City, about an hour north (58 minutes, 49.8 miles) and off our main map: $26 for 18 for golfers 60 and over (2025 rate card). At about 5,800 feet it runs much cooler than St. George in summer.
  • SunRiver residents get their own rate ($65 for 18 in peak), but that's for people who live in the community.
  • Conestoga in Mesquite sits inside Del Webb's Sun City Mesquite (55+) community. Its resident rate ($105 to $115, $60 in summer) is for Sun City Mesquite residents only.
  • City courses, by season: St. George Golf Club and Southgate charge $44 walking for 18 from October to May and $30 from June to September (city fee page, October 2026).

If you live in Washington County, the city loyalty card and SunRiver county rate are the bigger savings. Our St. George golf resident rates post has the numbers. Visitors save most with twilight and summer rates.
