Slope ladder: The Hardest Golf Courses in St. George and Southern Utah, Ranked by the Numbers

Of the hardest golf courses in St. George, Utah, Coral Canyon in Washington tops the list by USGA slope, at 75.2 / 148 from the Black tees, with a 155 slope on the front nine. Copper Rock in Hurricane has the highest men's Course Rating in the area (75.8, slope 146). Black Desert in Ivins and the private Entrada (both 139), Sunbrook's Woodbridge/Blackrock pairing (138) and Sand Hollow (137) round out the top tier.

That's from the tips, though, and almost nobody plays the tips. Below we rank the field, then look at what changes from the tees you'll actually use, for both men and women, and where the hard ones sit around Washington County.

How we ranked them

All ratings are current USGA NCRDB figures, as published on our map.

  • Course Rating is roughly what a scratch golfer is expected to shoot.
  • Slope shows how much harder the course plays for everyone else. The higher it is, the more a bogey golfer suffers.

We ranked the hardest golf courses in St. George by men's slope from the back tees and used Course Rating to break ties. Slope doesn't capture everything. Lost-ball lava, forced carries and wind don't all show up evenly in it, so we've noted those below.

The top tier, explained

1. Coral Canyon: a front nine that bites

Coral Canyon's 148 slope is the highest in St. George, and the front nine alone rates 155 from the Blacks, against 140 on the back. Golf Digest describes wide fairways, but there are real forced carries into greens, framed by thick rough, dry washes and red-rock outcrops. The opening hole sets the tone: the drive drops about 100 feet from a high tee, then the approach plays uphill. It's also strong value for the test, at about $135 for 18 in peak season (secondary source, October 2026). Rounds can run around five hours, so bring water. The Coral Canyon course guide has the tee table, and our Coral Canyon review covers which tees to pick.

2. Copper Rock: the highest Course Rating

Copper Rock (2020, Dale Beddo) has the highest men's Course Rating in the St. George area, 75.8 from 7,283 yards. The greens do most of the damage. They're firm, multi-tiered and break more than they look, so stay below the hole. Reviewers say 15-plus handicaps should move forward, because there's a big gap between tee sets. Holes to note:

  • #4 "O' Chute": a 246-yard par 3 from the tips.
  • #5 "Sidewinder": a 602-yard par 5 with a green about 210 feet long.
  • #13 "Down and Dirty": the approach drops sharply over trouble to a narrow green.

It hosted the LPGA's Epson Tour event from 2021 to 2026. See the Copper Rock course guide and our Copper Rock review.

3. Black Desert: hard and expensive to miss

On paper Black Desert's 139 slope is a step below the top two. In practice the bentgrass corridors run through black basalt, so a miss is usually a lost ball, not a hack-out. The greens are big and heavily undulating. The par-5 #13 plays to a green on a lava-ringed knob (the PGA TOUR plays it as a 519-yard par 4). Every round includes a forecaddie, so use the reads. Non-guests paid $325 to $450 on the 2026 rate card. More in our Black Desert guide.

3. Entrada at Snow Canyon: the private one

Entrada matches Black Desert at 139 from the tips. Since David McLay Kidd's 2020-22 rebuild it's far more playable for mid-handicaps, with wider fairways and a ground game. The lava-field run on 15 to 17 is still where cards fall apart. You can only play it as a member's guest or by staying at The Inn at Entrada.

5. Sunbrook: the hardest city course

Sunbrook's three nines play as three different 18s. The Woodbridge/Blackrock pairing is the hardest at 73.8 / 138, with lava on Blackrock and water on about a third of the holes. Woodbridge #4 is a par 3 from an elevated tee to an island green. At $68 walking in peak season, it's the cheapest hard round on this list.

6. Sand Hollow Championship: hard where it matters

Sand Hollow's 137 slope (138 front, 136 back) undersells the back nine. On holes 11 to 15 the course runs along a cliff edge, and everything left falls away. Miss right. The #12 has a drop of about 100 feet down the left. The #15 can play up to about 230 yards from the low back tee, over a ravine to a cliff-edge green. Wind adds to it. See our Sand Hollow guide.

Where the hard courses are: Washington, Hurricane and the west side

The two hardest courses by the numbers both sit east of town, along the I-15 side toward Hurricane and Zion National Park. The west side has the lava.

Area Hard courses Drive from downtown St. George

Central and south St. GeorgeSunRiver (132), St. George Golf Club and Southgate (129)8–14 min

That makes the east side the natural base for a "hardest courses" trip. From Sand Hollow Resort, Copper Rock is about 18 minutes by road and Coral Canyon about 19, and the Holiday Inn Express St. George North - Zion sits about 3 minutes from Coral Canyon's first tee. Our Washington, Utah golf guide and Hurricane and Sand Hollow golf guide cover those clusters in full.

The gentler golf is in town. The valley courses in central and south St. George, close to the convention-center hotels, carry the lowest back-tee slopes in the area.

From the tees you'll actually play

From around 6,150 to 6,600 yards, the order changes. Coral Canyon and Copper Rock stay stiff, while the resort courses soften a lot:

Course Tee Yards Men's rating / slope

Copper RockGold6,18570.6 / 138
Coral CanyonBlue/White combo6,15170.6 / 135

Black DesertWeiskopf6,47471.2 / 128
The LedgesBlue6,56471.1 / 127
Sand HollowGreen6,46269.4 / 125

If you want a hard round without a long one, Coral Canyon's Blue tees (143) are the toughest mid-length test in town. If you want a famous course that won't beat you up, Sand Hollow's Green tees (125) and Black Desert's Weiskopf tees (128) are surprisingly forgiving on the card. The lava still counts at Black Desert.

The hardest golf courses in St. George for women

Women's slopes run higher, and the ranking shifts slightly:

Black DesertTournament7,39382.3 / 151

Sand HollowRed (Tournament)7,31580.7 / 146

From a typical women's tee of 5,500 to 6,000 yards, the stiffest are Coral Canyon White (5,810 yds, 74.1 / 145), Sunbrook Silver on Woodbridge/Blackrock (5,991 yds, 75.2 / 143) and Copper Rock Silver (5,753 yds, 74.1 / 142). For comparison, The Ledges' Silver is 71.8 / 122 at 5,576 yards.

The hardest holes around St. George

  • Green Spring #6, "Devil's Gulch": a long par 4 back across a red-rock gorge, long ranked Utah's hardest hole in a Salt Lake Tribune poll. The #5, "Bottomless Pit," a par 3 over the same gorge, comes just before it. Green Spring's front nine slopes 138 against 126 on the back.
  • Coral Canyon #1: a 100-foot drop off the tee, then an uphill approach. It's the opener of a 155-slope nine.
  • Sand Hollow #15: a par 3 of up to about 230 yards over a ravine to a cliff-edge green.
  • Copper Rock #4: a 246-yard par 3 from the tips.
  • Entrada #15 to #17: the lava run.
  • Sky Mountain #17: a par 4 over a ravine with a fully blind tee shot.

Worth the drive: Wolf Creek in Mesquite

About 52 minutes down I-15 in Mesquite, Nevada, Wolf Creek belongs in this conversation. It rates 74.4 / 147 from the Challenger tees, with 155 on the back nine, the same as Coral Canyon's front. Its middle Champions tees are still 140. Budget five-plus hours, and remember Mesquite is an hour behind St. George. The Wolf Creek guide has the details.

How to survive the hard ones

  • Move up a tee. Reviewers say 15-plus handicaps should play forward at Copper Rock, and Wolf Creek's middle tees already slope 140.
  • Know which side is dead. It's left at Sand Hollow on 11 to 15, and anywhere off the short grass at Black Desert.
  • Play from below the hole on Copper Rock's tiered greens.
  • Take free relief where it's offered. Copper Rock's local rule gives free relief from unmarked landscaped rock beds.
  • Tee off early. The hardest courses are also some of the slowest, with around five hours reported at Coral Canyon and Sand Hollow.
