Map of the courses in this guide: Hurricane, Utah Golf: Sand Hollow, Sky Mountain and Copper Rock on the East Side of St. George

Hurricane, Utah golf means three places on the east side of Washington County: Sand Hollow Resort (an 18, a links nine and a pitch-and-putt), Sky Mountain, the city's municipal 18, and Copper Rock, an Epson Tour venue that opened in 2020. All three are 28 to 36 minutes from downtown St. George, and between them they are the closest courses on our map to Zion National Park.

This guide sets out how the Hurricane courses compare, how far each is from St. George and from each other, where to stay, and how to pair rounds. For hole-by-hole detail, each course has its own guide, linked below.

Where Hurricane sits: east of St. George, on the road to Zion

Hurricane is the gateway town between St. George and Zion. Coming from St. George you pass Washington and the Coral Canyon / SR-9 exit off I-15, and SR-9 then runs through Hurricane, on through LaVerkin toward Springdale and the park. Toquerville and Leeds sit to the north, toward I-15 and Cedar City; neither has a course on our map.

The three golf sites are spread around town:

  • Sky Mountain is on the west edge of Hurricane, on a mesa near the SR-9 turnoff. It is the closest of the three to St. George and to Zion.
  • Sand Hollow is southwest of town beside Sand Hollow State Park and its reservoir. The setting is rural, with off-road dunes nearby and events in the Rock Bowl.
  • Copper Rock is inside the Copper Rock master-planned community, the farthest St. George-area course from downtown on our map.

Coral Canyon, in Washington, is the natural fourth course on this side of the county. It is about 17 minutes from downtown St. George and 12 to 19 minutes from the Hurricane hotels. Our Washington, Utah golf guide covers it with Green Spring.

How the three Hurricane courses compare

Sand Hollow: the one people fly in for

The Championship course's back nine runs along a ridgeline above a red-rock canyon, and holes 11 to 15 are the reason it has been in Golf Digest's Utah top 10 since 2011. It is #10 on the 2025-26 list. The front nine is flatter desert. Pricing is dynamic: spring 2027 weekday mornings were $305 to $366, while December and January afternoons were $75 to $85. Read our Sand Hollow golf course guide or the Sand Hollow course page.

Sky Mountain: the value round with the view

A short city course on a mesa, with elevated tees, tabletop greens and views to Zion, Pine Valley Mountain and the Virgin River gorge. Wind is the main defence. At about $68 to $88 with cart it is the cheapest 18 in Hurricane, and its Google listing showed 4.7 from 1,363 reviews on October 12, 2026. The official site couldn't be read, so confirm rates by phone. See our Sky Mountain guide and the Sky Mountain course page.

Copper Rock: the stiffest test

Copper Rock carries the highest men's Course Rating in the St. George area, 75.8 from the Copper tees, and has hosted the LPGA's Epson Tour every year from 2021 to 2026. Its back nine holds the big elevation changes, including the 81-foot drop on the 13th. It publishes no public rate, reviewers question the conditioning at the prices they paid, and the permanent clubhouse has not been built. Our Copper Rock guide and the Copper Rock course page have the detail.

  • Sand Hollow Resort has villas, 2- to 4-bedroom condos and homes with full kitchens, which suit groups of 4 to 8. The STAY&PLAY code takes 10% off lodging and 20% off Championship and Links green fees (not twilight), with a two-night minimum, and guests can book tee times a year out. Expect a nightly resort fee on booking sites. The outdoor pools close from late November to mid-February.
  • Comfort Inn & Suites is on the west edge of town next to Sky Mountain, with an indoor pool and hot tub. Nothing is walkable, so you drive for dinner. A sample rate for October 12, 2026 was $131 to $145.
  • Wingate is on State Street, with free breakfast and restaurants and a grocery within a short walk. It's the closest hotel to Copper Rock.
  • Holiday Inn Express North - Zion is in Washington beside Coral Canyon, seen at about $100 to $120 a night (January snapshot), with free bus, truck and trailer parking for groups that drive.

No published rates were found for the Wingate or Sand Hollow Resort in October 2026, so check your dates. If you're torn between Hurricane and a base in town, our where to stay for golf in St. George guide compares the areas.

Pairing rounds in Hurricane

The courses are close enough to stack. A few pairings that work:

Pairing Gap between courses Why
Sand Hollow Championship + Linkssame clubhouse27 holes without moving the car; the Links is walkable
Sand Hollow + Sky Mountain~18 min (from the resort)bucket-list round, then a cheaper, shorter afternoon 18
Sand Hollow + Copper Rock~18 min (from the resort)the two long, high-rated courses back to back
Sky Mountain + Copper Rock~14 min (from the Comfort Inn beside Sky Mountain)value round plus the hardest test
Coral Canyon + any Hurricane course12–19 min from the Hurricane hotelsadds a fourth course without crossing St. George

Remember the booking rules when you stack rounds. Copper Rock needs 72 hours to cancel for free, Sand Hollow 48. Sand Hollow's afternoon times are cheaper but aren't guaranteed to finish 18, which matters on short winter days. Our two rounds a day in St. George guide has more on 36-hole days.

When to play Hurricane golf

Hurricane follows the St. George calendar. February to May is peak, with highs of about 59°F to 85°F and the tightest tee sheets; Sand Hollow's Saturday, March 20, 2027 was down to afternoon times when we checked on October 11, 2026. June to August is hot, with St. George highs of 96°F to 102°F, and it is also Zion's busiest stretch. October and November bring fresh turf and highs of 64°F to 79°F.

September is where the east side helps. The St. George city courses close in turn for overseed (September 8 to October 6 in 2026). We found no fall overseed closure published for Sky Mountain or Sand Hollow, Coral Canyon doesn't overseed, and Copper Rock publishes no dates, so call first. See our St. George overseed schedule.

Wind is the other factor. April to July are the windiest months at the St. George airport, and Sky Mountain's mesa and Sand Hollow's rim are exposed. Morning tee times are the safer bet.

Golf and Zion from Hurricane

Every Hurricane course is 26 to 34 road miles from Zion's south entrance, and a local newsletter puts Sky Mountain at about 20 minutes from Springdale. That makes the classic plan easy: hike early, then tee off in the early afternoon. Our golf near Zion National Park guide has the full plan, including Thunderbird at Mount Carmel Junction on the far side of the park.
