Why golfers go to Sky Mountain
Three reasons come up again and again when golfers talk about Sky Mountain Golf Course, Hurricane's city course:
- The views. The course sits on a mesa top, with elevated tees, red sand and lava, and long views to Zion and Pine Valley Mountain. Our map labels it "Value, Scenery, Near Zion".
- The price. At roughly $68 to $88 with cart, it's well below Hurricane's resort course. Sand Hollow ran about $75 to $366 on its live tee sheet for October 2026 to April 2027.
- The location. It's about 26.1 road miles to Zion's south entrance, against 29.0 for Copper Rock and 33.5 for Sand Hollow. One local newsletter says it's about 20 minutes to Springdale.
Golfers seem to agree. Its Google listing showed 4.7 from 1,363 reviews when checked on October 12, 2026, the highest review count of the Hurricane courses.
Where Sky Mountain sits: the west edge of Hurricane, on the road to Zion
Sky Mountain is the first of the Hurricane courses you reach coming from St. George. The Comfort Inn & Suites beside it sits on SR-9 near the Sky Mountain turnoff, and SR-9 is the road that carries on through Hurricane toward LaVerkin, Springdale and Zion. Toquerville and Leeds sit to the north, toward I-15 and Cedar City; there is no course in either town on our map.
| From Sky Mountain | Drive (routing estimate) |
|---|---|
| Downtown St. George | ~28 min, 17.5 mi |
| Comfort Inn & Suites Zion Park Area | 5 min, 1.3 mi |
| Wingate by Wyndham Hurricane | 8 min, 3.0 mi |
| Holiday Inn Express St. George North - Zion | 15 min, 8.1 mi |
| Sand Hollow Resort | 18 min, 8.6 mi |
| Zion's south entrance | about 26.1 road miles |
The other courses on this side of the county are close too. Coral Canyon in Washington is about 12 minutes from the Comfort Inn next door, and Copper Rock is about 14. Our Hurricane, Utah golf guide puts all three Hurricane courses side by side.
Sky Mountain Golf Course, Hurricane: tees and ratings
These are the current USGA figures. Older listings show the Blue tees at 6,383 yards and 69.9 / 115, which has been superseded.
| Tee | Yards | Men (rating / slope) | Women (rating / slope) |
|---|---|---|---|
| Blue | 6,306 | 71.1 / 130 | 77.0 / 143 |
| White | 5,800 | 68.6 / 124 | 74.2 / 137 |
| Gold | 4,831 | 64.2 / 115 | 68.8 / 124 |
There are only three sets of tees, and the gap from White to Gold is nearly 1,000 yards. A 130 slope on a 6,306-yard course tells you the trouble isn't length. It's wind, elevated tee shots and greens set up on tables.
Jeff D. Hardin designed it, and it opened in 1994. The clubhouse sits at about 3,197 feet, a little higher than Sand Hollow and lower than Copper Rock. Our St. George golf elevation guide explains why that matters less than the drops on individual holes.
Wind is the defence
A Golf Digest panelist summed it up as "fun as long as there is no wind." That's the course in one line. On a calm morning it's a scoring chance. When the breeze is up, the mesa has nothing to block it.
St. George's windiest months are April to July, with average daily winds of about 7 to 8 mph at the airport. November to January are the calmest, at around 3 to 4 mph. If you want Sky Mountain at its friendliest, play it early on a winter or late-fall morning. Our St. George golf weather by month guide has the full table.
From the map's hole data (approximate):
- #1 drops about 65 feet from tee to green, the biggest fall on the course, so the round opens downhill.
- #6 climbs about 38 feet, the biggest uphill hole.
- The four par 3s are #2 (about 164 yds), #8 (about 180), #12 (about 203) and #16 (about 198).
Total elevation change is modest compared with the canyon courses. On the map, the round climbs about 139 feet and falls about 193 in all. The difficulty is exposure, not hills.
Signature holes
- #16: a par 3 of around 200 yards along a cliff side, with a red-rock backdrop.
- #17: a par 4 over a ravine with a fully blind tee shot. You either lay up or go for it, so ask the starter or a local which line to take the first time.
- #18: the course description calls it a long par-5 finisher that is reachable in two.
What it costs, and how sure we are
The official site for Sky Mountain Golf Course, Hurricane's city course, blocks automated access, so these prices come from secondary sources (STG Newsletter, October 2026, and Golf Digest's $88 listing). Treat them as a guide and confirm by phone.

When to play it
Sky Mountain has one scheduling quirk that helps visitors: we found no fall overseed closure. Greater Zion lists greens aerification on May 2 to 3 (year not stated), and a May 2024 reviewer found freshly punched greens. If you're coming in September, when most St. George golf courses close in turn for overseed, Sky Mountain is worth a call. See the St. George overseed schedule for who's closed when.
The other timing note is pace. Slow play and no marshals are recurring complaints in 2024 GolfPass reviews. Go early, which also beats the wind.
Pairing it with Zion
The best-known local tip is simple: play it after an early hike. Zion's busiest months are June and July, each with about 12% of the park's annual visits (2019 to 2023 average), and those are also the hottest months for golf here. In spring and fall you can hike in the cool morning and tee off by early afternoon without a long drive.

Where to stay
For Sky Mountain Golf Course, Hurricane has two chain hotels a few minutes from the first tee:
- Comfort Inn & Suites Zion Park Area is about 1.3 miles away (roughly 5 minutes). It has an indoor pool and hot tub and two-queen rooms, but nothing walkable, so you drive for dinner. A sample rate for October 12, 2026 was $131 for members and $145 otherwise.
- Wingate by Wyndham Hurricane/Zion National Park is about 3 miles away (around 8 minutes), with free breakfast and restaurants and a grocery a short walk away on State Street. It's also the closest hotel to Copper Rock (about 12 minutes).
- Holiday Inn Express St. George North - Zion in Washington is about 15 minutes away, next to Coral Canyon, and was seen at about $100 to $120 a night (January snapshot).
Rates change, so check your dates. For the wider choice, see our St. George golf hotels guide.

| Best for | views, value, a shorter course | the cliff-edge back nine | a stiff test |
Sky Mountain won't replace Sand Hollow's cliff-edge back nine on a bucket list; see our Sand Hollow guide for that. But if you're building a Southern Utah golf trip around Zion, it's the closest and usually the cheapest 18 on that side of the county. For more low-cost options, see cheap golf in St. George, and for the tougher neighbour, the Copper Rock course guide.
Who Sky Mountain suits
- Golfers combining Zion and golf: by road it's the closest course on our map to Zion's south entrance.
- Value hunters: roughly $68 to $88 with a cart, against typical rates well above that at Sand Hollow and Copper Rock.
- Shorter hitters and seniors: 6,306 yards from the tips, and the Gold tees are 4,831 yards. Our senior golf in St. George guide has more.
- Groups filling a schedule: a cheaper fourth or fifth round between bigger-ticket days at Sand Hollow or Copper Rock.
- Not ideal for: low handicappers chasing a long test, or anyone stuck with a windy afternoon tee time.
If the Sky Mountain golf course in Hurricane is your only stop near the park, pair it with a morning in Zion. If you have a few more days, our guide to the best golf courses in St. George covers the rest of the county.
