Sand Hollow golf course is the Championship course at Sand Hollow Resort in Hurricane, Utah, about 32 minutes east of downtown St. George. It is a John Fought design from 2008 that plays 7,315 yards from the tips with a 74.0 rating and 137 slope, and its back nine, especially holes 11 to 15, runs along a cliff edge above a red-rock canyon. Expect $150 to $366 for a morning round depending on the season (seen October 2026), and about half that on a winter afternoon.
That stretch is why Sand Hollow has sat in Golf Digest's top 10 for Utah since 2011. This guide covers the course hole by hole, then tees, fees, booking, the Links and Wee courses, the Hurricane setting and where to stay.

Where Sand Hollow sits: Hurricane, about 32 minutes east of St. George
Sand Hollow is on the east side of Washington County, in Hurricane, beside Sand Hollow State Park and its reservoir. From downtown St. George it is about 32 minutes and 19.5 miles on our routing. It is part of a cluster of three Hurricane courses that most St. George visitors treat as one day out of town, or as a separate base.
| Course | Town | From downtown St. George | From Sand Hollow Resort |
|---|---|---|---|
| Sand Hollow Championship, Links, Wee | Hurricane | ~32 min, 19.5 mi | 3 min |
| Sky Mountain | Hurricane | ~28 min, 17.5 mi | 18 min |
| Copper Rock | Hurricane | ~36 min, 22.2 mi | 18 min |
| Coral Canyon | Washington | ~17 min, 10.4 mi | 19 min |
Drive times are free-flow routing estimates. The setting is rural, with off-road dunes nearby and events in the Rock Bowl such as the Sky Fest balloon festival. The nearest groceries and restaurants beyond the clubhouse are in Hurricane, about 10 minutes away.
By road, Sand Hollow is about 33.5 miles from Zion National Park's south entrance, so a hike-and-golf day works. For the whole east-side cluster, see our guide to Hurricane, Utah golf.
The front nine: open desert, and a warm-up for what's coming
The front nine is flatter red-rock desert, and it is the easier half. That does not make it short. Both front-nine par 5s play over 570 mapped yards, and the hardest hole on the card is here.
Some numbers from the mapped layout, with tee-to-green elevation change from a terrain model:
| Hole | Par | Yards (mapped) | Handicap | Elevation tee to green |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | 4 | 439 | 15 | 46 ft downhill |
| 2 | 5 | 573 | 7 | 10 ft down |
| 4 | 4 | 472 | 5 | 10 ft up |
| 6 | 4 | 492 | 1 | about level |
| 7 | 5 | 572 | 3 | 8 ft up |
| 9 | 4 | 434 | 9 | 30 ft uphill |
The opener drops 46 feet, the biggest fall on the course, and the 9th climbs back 30 feet to the clubhouse. In between, the 6th is the No. 1 handicap hole: a 492-yard par 4 with almost no elevation help. The par 3s on this side are the 205-yard 3rd and the 160-yard 8th.
The back nine at Sand Hollow, hole by hole
This is the show. From the 11th the course runs along a ridgeline above the canyon, and for five holes everything left falls away.
11th, par 3, 193 yards (mapped). Ron Whitten of Golf Digest called this the "edge of the world" tee. You play downhill, about 13 feet tee to green, to a green set on top of a butte.
12th, par 4, 442 yards, handicap 2. The hole runs along the gorge with roughly a 100-foot drop down the left. The green sits about 53 feet above the tee on the terrain model, the biggest climb on the course, so it plays longer than the card.
13th, par 4, 319 yards. A short par 4 on a ledge, and the fairway is cart-free, so you will walk part of it. It plays about 17 feet uphill.
14th, par 4, 528 yards (mapped), handicap 4. Downhill and sidehill, falling about 13 feet to the green.
15th, par 3, up to about 230 yards. From the low back tee you carry a ravine to a green on the cliff edge. On the map it drops about 28 feet.
Golf Digest lists three of the back-nine holes on its America's 100 Greatest Holes list, though its page does not say which three.
The tip for all five holes comes from Golf Digest panelists and GolfPass reviewers alike: miss right. Everything left falls off the cliff.
After 15 the course eases. The 16th is the easiest hole on the card (handicap 18, 363 yards), the 17th is a par 5 of 525 mapped yards, and the 18th climbs 34 feet back to the clubhouse. Over the full round the terrain model shows about 158 feet of climb and 158 feet of fall, tee to green, so it rolls rather than plunges. Our St. George golf elevation guide compares that with the canyon courses.
Tees and ratings
Five sets, all par 72. Ratings are from the USGA database and match the club card.
| Tee | Yards | Men (rating / slope) | Women (rating / slope) |
|---|---|---|---|
| Red (Tournament) | 7,315 | 74.0 / 137 | 80.7 / 146 |
| Yellow (Championship) | 6,893 | 72.2 / 132 | 78.3 / 141 |
| Green (Signature) | 6,462 | 69.4 / 125 | 75.0 / 133 |
| Combo (Green/Blue) | 5,934 | 67.5 / 116 | 72.7 / 128 |
| Blue (Fought) | 5,306 | 65.8 / 108 | 70.3 / 124 |
From the Reds, the men's slope is 138 on the front and 136 on the back. Wind and the forced carries on the back nine add to that. Five tees down to 5,306 yards make it easy to fit a mixed group.

Booking Sand Hollow tee times: rules that catch people out
- The 180-day window matters. When we checked on October 11, 2026, Saturday, March 20, 2027 already had only afternoon times left. For a spring weekend, book the day your date opens.
- Resort guests get a year. Staying at the resort lets you book up to 12 months ahead.
- 48-hour rule. Cancellations and player reductions need 48 hours. Prepaid times are non-refundable, with no rain checks.
- Singles call. Inside 48 hours, singles cannot book online and need to phone the pro shop.
Our tee times booking guide compares these rules with the other courses in St. George and Washington County.
When to play Sand Hollow
The resort aerifies its greens in early May and in August. It says the dates change each year, so call before booking those months. Greater Zion lists May 14-16 and August 27 to September 1, with no year given. No fall overseed closure is published, which makes Sand Hollow one of the courses worth calling in September, when the St. George city courses close in turn for overseed. Our overseed schedule has the city dates.
February to May is peak, with highs of about 59°F to 85°F and the hardest tee times to get. April to July are the windiest months at the St. George airport, and the back nine is exposed, so book mornings. December and January are cool and calm, and the half-price afternoon rate makes them the value window.
Dress code and practice
The dress code is strictly enforced: collared shirts (golf mocks are fine), no denim of any kind, shorts mid-length or longer, and no T-shirts, tank tops, athletic shorts or sweats. Soft spikes only.
There is a full driving range with target greens, a short-game area and a putting green. Rental Callaway sets were listed at $105 in the resort FAQ, and Horizon Kitchen + Spirits in the clubhouse serves breakfast through dinner.
The Links nine and the Wee course
Sand Hollow Links is a nine-hole, par-36 links-style course by the same designers: wide, treeless and firm, with hand-built stone walls and one par 4 modelled on the Road Hole at St Andrews. It is not short. The Red tees play 3,687 yards for nine with a 139 slope, and the 3rd and 9th are both par 5s over 570 mapped yards. The resort claims Utah's largest greens and fairways, so lag putting matters.
Online times are listed without a cart, and walking is encouraged. Nine holes ran $80 on weekdays and $105 on Saturdays in spring 2027, dropping to $50 on January weekdays. The price was flat all day. See the Sand Hollow Links course guide.
The Wee Course is a nine-hole pitch-and-putt with holes of 40 to 100 yards. It is not on the online tee sheet and has no published rate, so call the pro shop. The resort bills it as Southern Utah's only par-3 course. Our par 3 golf in St. George guide covers the other short options.
Put the Links and the Championship course together and you have 27 holes without moving the car.

Units are individually owned, so finishes vary. Listings show a nightly resort fee (about $9.99 per suite, $19.98 per condo), a departure cleaning fee on condos and a $250 deposit. Three-bedroom condos sleep around 8 to 10, which suits a buddies trip. The three outdoor pools close from late November to mid-February; the hot tubs stay open all year.
Staying in Hurricane also puts you close to Copper Rock (see our Copper Rock guide) and Sky Mountain, the closest course to Zion (see our Sky Mountain guide and golf near Zion National Park). For the whole region, our St. George golf hotels guide compares every base.
Is Sand Hollow golf course worth it?
For most visitors, yes, if the back nine is the draw. Golf Digest panelists in 2025 named conditioning as the weak spot, and one 2021 reviewer reported 5 hours 5 minutes for a twosome. Golf Digest's 2025-26 list puts it #10 in Utah, behind Black Desert at #2. What it has is the cliff-edge run from 11 to 15 that Golf Digest writes about, with three back-nine holes on its 100 Greatest Holes list. For how it compares with the rest of Southern Utah golf, read our list of the best golf courses in St. George.
