Red-rock poster: Myrtle Beach golf winter conditions: overseeded rye, dormant bermuda and aerification dates

Myrtle Beach golf winter conditions depend on whether a course overseeds. Overseeded courses sow ryegrass in late September-October and stay green; the rest play on dormant bermuda, tan but playable, from about late November. For winter 2025-26, Pine Lakes, the Grande Dunes Resort Course, Arrowhead, King's North and Wild Wing were named wall to wall. Expect frost delays in January.

This guide explains the two winter setups, lists what the files say course by course, and covers the summer aerification calendar.

Quick facts

  • Turf: bermuda fairways and tees; greens are mostly ultradwarf bermuda, with some bentgrass.
  • Dormancy: bermuda goes tan once soil temperatures drop below about 50-55F, usually from late November.
  • Overseed timing: late September to October (Tidewater around Thanksgiving).
  • Wall to wall: a smaller group; promotional counts of about 19 courses, and Founders Group said 11 of its courses went wall to wall around 2019-2020.
  • Aerification: mostly June to August, with a few days of sanded greens.
  • Frost: common on January mornings (36.7F normal low at the coast).

Overseeded rye vs dormant bermuda

Overseeded. The course sows ryegrass over the bermuda in late September-October. In winter it is green, and wall-to-wall programs cover fairways, tees and rough. Overseeding can bring cart-path-only days in early fall while the rye establishes, and overseeded courses may charge more in winter.

Dormant. The course lets the bermuda go dormant. It turns tan, and some operators argue it plays firmer and faster, with more roll. It is playable all winter.

Partial. Many courses overseed only tees, fairways or roughs. The files rarely say which parts, so ask the shop.

Greens. Bentgrass greens stay green all year. Ultradwarf bermuda greens are managed course by course; the files do not say how each one is kept in winter.

What the overseeded courses mean for a winter trip

If the group wants green fairways in January, build the week around the courses named for 2025-26: Pine Lakes, the Grande Dunes Resort Course, Arrowhead, King's North and Wild Wing. They are 10 to 22 minutes from the SkyWheel. See the Pine Lakes course guide and the King's North course guide.

Pine Lakes is a special case: GolfPass and GolfNow list SeaDwarf seashore paspalum greens, and GolfNow lists paspalum fairways too.

If the group cares more about price, dormant courses are often the value play. Barefoot, for example, does not publish an overseed program, and its January 4 to February 9, 2027 walk-on rates start at $108 and $95, among the lowest of its year. See Myrtle Beach winter golf and Myrtle Beach golf in winter.

Bentgrass greens

Bentgrass greens stay green all year, which is why some winter golfers seek them out. In the files:

  • Man O' War: Crenshaw bentgrass (GolfPass; a 2026 reviewer was also told bent).
  • The Wizard: Penn G2 bentgrass.
  • Colonial Charters: bentgrass (GolfPass).
  • Crow Creek: V-8 bentgrass, though Sept-Oct 2026 reviews report patchy greens after aerification.
  • Leopard's Chase: L-93 bentgrass, over the North Carolina line.

Several bent listings are out of date. Arrowhead converted to MiniVerde in 2009, King's North went to TifEagle in its 2024-25 renovation, and Tidewater has had MiniVerde since its rebuild around 2014.

Summer aerification: the other conditions window

Most Grand Strand courses aerify greens in summer, roughly June to August, with a few days of sanded greens or closures. Dates in the files:

Some courses also aerify in fall: a GolfPass reviewer at Long Bay played the day before a fall 2026 greens aeration. Ask about maintenance days before booking any late-summer or fall round. See Myrtle Beach summer golf and the best time to golf in Myrtle Beach.

Questions golfers ask

Are Myrtle Beach golf courses green in winter?

Some are. Courses that overseed with ryegrass in late September-October stay green; the rest play on dormant bermuda, which turns tan once soil temperatures fall below about 50-55F, usually from late November. Bentgrass greens stay green all year.

Which Myrtle Beach courses overseed wall to wall?

For winter 2025-26, a myrtlebeachgolftrips.com list named Pine Lakes, the Grande Dunes Resort Course, Arrowhead, King's North and Wild Wing Avocet as wall-to-wall overseeded, rough included. Older lists add the Dunes Club, Myrtlewood, TPC Myrtle Beach, Blackmoor and Eagle Nest. Plans for 2026-27 were not confirmed.

Is dormant bermuda bad for golf?

No, it is playable. It is tan rather than green, and some operators argue it plays firmer and faster than overseeded turf. Overseeded courses look better and may charge more in winter.

When do Myrtle Beach courses overseed?

Usually late September to October, which can bring temporary cart-path-only days in early fall. Tidewater is later, overseeding around Thanksgiving while staying open. A reviewer at Caledonia was told it was cart-path-only for overseeding on November 9, 2025.

When do Myrtle Beach courses aerify?

Most aerify greens in summer, roughly June to August. Barefoot's 2027 dates are Fazio June 7-12, Dye June 21-27, Love July 5-10 and Norman July 19-24, each with 10-12 days to recover. Tidewater aerifies August 1-8, 2027.

Are there frost delays in Myrtle Beach in winter?

Yes, they are common. January's normal low is 36.7F at the North Myrtle Beach airport and 35.2F inland at Conway (NOAA 1991-2020), so book mid-morning tee times on clear winter days.

Which Myrtle Beach courses have bentgrass greens?

In the files, Man O' War (Crenshaw bent) and The Wizard (Penn G2) list bentgrass greens, as do Crow Creek (V-8) and Leopard's Chase (L-93) over the North Carolina line. Several older bent listings are out of date after conversions to ultradwarf bermuda.
