The key number: Destin events calendar for golfers: the dates that move prices, rooms and traffic

The Destin events that matter most to a golf trip are spring break (early March to mid-April), the summer beach season, the Sandestin Wine Festival in mid-April and the month-long Destin Fishing Rodeo in October. Spring break moves prices and traffic the most. Most other festivals are local, but a few fill one area for a weekend.

This guide lists each event with its dates and what it does to rooms, roads and tee sheets, then the golf-only dates, like overseeding and member-guest weeks, that close courses to visitors.

Quick facts

  • Biggest price driver: spring break, roughly early March to mid-April; Easter is March 28, 2027.
  • Highest room rates: summer, Memorial Day (May 31, 2027) to early August.
  • Fills Sandestin: the Sandestin Wine Festival, mid-April (2026: April 16-19).
  • October: the Destin Fishing Rodeo runs all month on the harbour.
  • January: 30A Songwriters Festival, January 15-18, 2027.
  • Golf closures: Sandestin overseed weeks in early November; aeration in May and August.

Spring break: the event that matters most

Spring break is the biggest price and traffic driver of the golf season, and it lands on the best golf weather of the year. College breaks cluster in March: one Florida travel site lists Georgia colleges March 6-13 and Alabama colleges March 13-20, 2027. K-12 breaks follow, with Alabama statewide March 29 to April 2 and Georgia April 5-9, 2027 per a school-calendar site, though districts vary. Tennessee and Louisiana district dates were not found.

What that means for golfers: beach condos fill with week-long minimums, Saturday traffic backs up on US 98 through Destin and on the 331 Clyde B. Wells Bridge, and sheriffs step up beach patrols. Sandestin's spring green fees also start March 6. Our season research suggests golf groups do better from mid-April to mid-May, or should base north of the bay. Our Destin golf in spring guide covers booking early for that window.

April and May: Sandestin and Fort Walton Beach

The Sandestin Wine Festival takes over the Village of Baytowne Wharf in mid-April. It fills Sandestin resort lodging for the long weekend, so if you want a stay-and-play package at Baytowne, the Links, the Raven or Burnt Pine that week, book early. The 2027 dates were not published in October 2026. Our Sandestin golf packages guide explains the packages.

The Billy Bowlegs Pirate Festival in mid-May brings a pirate "invasion", a festival and a torchlight parade to The Landing in downtown Fort Walton Beach. It slows US 98 near the Brooks Bridge and has a modest effect on Okaloosa Island hotels. The 2026 festival was the 70th; 2027 dates were not published.

Summer: rooms high, golf cheap

From Memorial Day to Labor Day, and especially July 4 week and June-July Saturdays, rooms are at their most expensive and US 98, 331 and 30A are at their busiest. Crab Island is crowded at weekends. Golf goes the other way: in 2026 Baytowne was $99 public and $75 for resort guests in summer, against $119 and $95 in spring. Prices seen October 2026; rates change. See Destin summer golf for heat, storms and dawn tee times.

Fall: the Seafood Festival and the Fishing Rodeo

The Destin Seafood Festival fills the Destin Harbor Boardwalk on the last weekend of September. The visitor bureau lists September 25-27, 2026 (Friday 4-10 p.m., Saturday 10 a.m.-10 p.m., Sunday 10 a.m.-6 p.m.), while another listing says September 26-28. Admission is free, with VIP tickets extra.

The Destin Fishing Rodeo has run every October since 1948. The 78th ran October 1-31, 2026, with daily weigh-ins from 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. behind AJ's on the harbour boardwalk, free to watch. Charter boats are booked and fishing groups compete with golf groups for harbour lodging at weekends. It pairs well with a golf trip: a half-day charter and a round. Whether it continued unchanged after Hurricane Isaias (October 9, 2026) was not confirmed. Our Destin golf in October guide covers the fall peak.

Winter: festivals without the crowds

The 30A Songwriters Festival runs over Martin Luther King Jr. weekend: January 15-18, 2027, its 18th year. Headliners announced in September 2026 include Gillian Welch and David Rawlings, Dawes, St. Paul and The Broken Bones and Larkin Poe. The main stage is at Grand Boulevard Town Center in Miramar Beach, across US 98 from Sandestin. It brings thousands into the quiet season and fills 30A and Grand Boulevard lodging, but has little effect on golf.

Mardi Gras is small here. Fort Walton Beach runs a city parade and a "Downtown Throwdown" on a Sunday before Mardi Gras (February 16, 2025; January 28, 2024); 2026 and 2027 dates were not found. Fat Tuesday is February 9, 2027.

The snowbird season, roughly December to March, is not an event but it shapes winter golf: monthly condo and RV demand peaks while short-stay rates are lowest, and senior leagues fill local courses on weekday mornings. Our Destin golf in winter guide covers the quiet season.

On the Fort Walton Beach side, the city club runs Winter Spark 9-hole social leagues on Thursdays from November 5, 2026 and Sundays from November 8, 2026. They are free to join and you pay per round, a good fit for snowbirds at the Fort Walton Beach Golf Club Pines and Oaks. On Hurlburt Field, Gator Lakes listed 2026 tournament entries at $20, $30 and $45 depending on membership tier.

For booking around these dates, see Destin tee times and the Fort Walton Beach Golf Club Pines course guide, the Raven course guide and the Baytowne course guide.

Pairing an event with a golf trip

  • Fishing Rodeo week in October: play mornings and watch the weigh-ins in the afternoon. Book harbour lodging early for weekends.
  • Wine Festival weekend in April: stay inside Sandestin only if you book early; otherwise base in Destin and drive in.
  • Songwriters weekend in January: cheap winter golf by day, music at Grand Boulevard by night.

Our things to do in Destin for golfers covers the rest of the off-course list, and the Mississippi coast's version is in our Biloxi events calendar for golfers.

Questions golfers ask

What is the biggest event for Destin hotel prices?

Spring break, roughly early March to mid-April. Beach condos fill, often with week-long minimum stays, and US 98 through Destin and the 331 bridge back up on Saturdays. Summer from Memorial Day to early August is the other peak for rooms, although golf is in its low-rate season then.

When is the Destin Fishing Rodeo?

All of October, every year since 1948. The 78th rodeo ran October 1-31, 2026, with daily weigh-ins from 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. on the Destin Harbor Boardwalk behind AJ's, free to watch. Whether it continued unchanged after Hurricane Isaias on October 9, 2026 was not confirmed.

When is the Sandestin Wine Festival?

Mid-April at the Village of Baytowne Wharf inside Sandestin. The 2026 festival was April 16-19 and 2025 was April 10-13. The 2027 dates were not yet published in October 2026. It fills Sandestin lodging for the long weekend.

When is the 30A Songwriters Festival?

Martin Luther King Jr. weekend every January; the 2027 festival is January 15-18, its 18th year. The main stage is at Grand Boulevard Town Center in Miramar Beach, with venues along 30A. It fills 30A and Grand Boulevard lodging that weekend but has little effect on golf.

Does Mardi Gras affect a Destin golf trip?

Hardly. Fort Walton Beach and Destin have small local parades, with afternoon road closures in downtown Fort Walton Beach. Fat Tuesday is February 9, 2027. The hotel effect is minimal, unlike Mobile or New Orleans.

Are there golf course closures I should plan around?

Yes. Sandestin closes Baytowne November 2-8 and the Links November 3-9, 2026 to overseed greens, and lists May and August aeration weeks. The Watersound Club courses lose guest times during member-guest weeks such as Campfest, November 12-14, 2026, and each has a weekly closed day.

When is the quietest time to visit Destin?

Winter outside the Christmas to New Year week. December to February brings the lowest short-stay hotel rates, quiet beaches and cool golf weather, although snowbirds keep local courses busy on weekday mornings. Thanksgiving week, November 26, 2026, raises family rental demand.
